I agree. Having recently taken up Engineering for fun on a couple of characters, I'd rather make a combat pet, than spend extra for a non-combat one, and I already have the soundtrack CD from Blizzard for the original game.
To be honest, I’m not really into the combat pets. Well, save for my hunter’s pets of course. *smiles*
The reason is simple; I want my pets out for more than 60 seconds every hour. What fun is that? Most engineered pets may as well be a spell effect or an explosive for all the time they get to see the light of day. Granted, the exploding sheep is an exception. It’s just too funny a concept not to be an exception. But combat pets like the chicken and the whelp, while fun while they last, are far too limited for my taste.
Engineering does make a couple of fun non-combat pets. The mechanical squirrel is a classic and the tranquil mechanical yeti is one of the coolest things since virtual sliced bread. So I give Blizzard a big thumbs up for providing both kinds of pets in one profession. I’m hoping for even more in the future.
I bought two copies of the new collector’s edition, just as I did the original. The fun I’ve had with the panda cub and the mini Diablo has more than made up for the difference in price. The soundtrack is really cool as well. And even though the new CE will only have one pet, I for one wouldn’t want to miss out on it. I’m also looking forward to some of the other items in the set. So I think it’s well wroth the price. And even if some of the items are not exclusive to the CE, I’ll already have them so I won’t have to buy them later.
