The anectodes go both ways, chicken and egg style. What's most often stated by the professionals is that Red 40 is mostly present in high-sugar junk food, and it's really a sugar problem. In our case that's not true; he's been getting it in low-sugar yogurt and we don't do a lot of added sugar. Parents report both the sugar and no-sugar connection.
Some ADD kids have been shown to do better on a high-protein diet and with Omega-3 fatty acids added to their diet - that's where no white bread comes in, it's all carbs that become sugar easy, while whole wheat has protein and Omega-3's (we only eat whole wheat). I've always baked with flax seed meal (an easy way to get Omega-3's) and I've added Omega-3 to our diet in the form of Flax Seed Oil, as it is all kinds of good for you anyway. Kiddo is actually tolerating a teaspoon of flax seed oil every morning, provided he can chase it with the new dye-free gummi vitamins I found him, lol.
Red Dye was banned in Britain last year because of studies like these:

It's been banned in most of Europe for a very long time (since '71 in Sweden). Oh, I've read that it was on CNN and the FDA is investigating, but I haven't found links for that yet.
Yeah, I been doing a lot of reading :)
I don't think this is a cure-all, there's a good chance he's a bit ADD. But if the violent behavior stopped (full-blown 2-year old style tantrums are part of it and some of the symptoms of a Red 40 reaction), I'd be relieved.
edit: Just wildly guessing 'cause I know your age group, lol. Your brother probably was in the Red 5 group, that dye was banned in 1971 and replaced with Red 40. Red 5 was actually poisoning people!!
