Good Morning, AllaK's - 9/15/08Follow

How was everyone's weekend?? Everybody take advantage of Exp Bonus Weekend? Still can for now. As of 10:51 AM EST the 20% still applies.. at least on my server (Venekor).

Didn't do much except work on Zam edits and exposed my new born Evil Ranger to raiding for the first time. AA galore but at level 42.. very little experience since the mobs were quite a bit above my level.

On the home front.. notta. Sat in front of the computer or television all weekend. Still adjusting to this night shift and not doing very well. Feels like Jet Lag.. but it doesn't go away. Only 20 more working days and I'm back on days though. So I'll probably adjust to the night shift when its time to go back to days. :P

All you can really do about the night shift thing is give in to the compulsion to sleep more. It sucks.

I had about 5 things going on this weekend, but I did managed to get some of that easy XP from the bone chips quest. All this even-con XP without travel has got me spoiled!

Some folks on Test heard my plea, so if we ever get those orbs unlocked on Live we've got fair spoilers for both the good and evil sides.

Meanwhile, we've been having these hideous behavior problems with my kid in Kindergarten, and I think I found the problem. Google Red 40 or Red Dye 40 and read up on how this common food coloring has been banned in Europe and is not only an allergen but is known to cause hyperactivity, impulsivity and violent temper tantrums in some kids. Turns out it's in the yogurt I send in his lunch, his cold medicine, and his vitamin. I swept the house for it Saturday, and I think I'm already seeing improvement, but this week at school will show us, I guess. Wish me luck. I'm terribly hopeful that this was causing the behavior that has everyone freaking out.

Yup. I've pretty much given up to hope that I won't be exhausted all during the week and sleeping alot on the weekends to catch up. Trick for me is to not get up too late on the weekdays. When I don't get anything done during the day I get in to a really bad mood. So no matter how early or late I go to bed, I'm getting up at 9am on the weekdays knowing that I'll just be hybernating on the weekends to catch up. :(

I hope that works for your kid. However, I read that the "Red Dye" scare was a wives tale which eventually encouraged some doctors to research and stumble up on stage two Attention Disorders and Hyperactivity. Might want to get the kiddo on a diet usually suggested for children with hyperactivity and Attention Disorder regardless if he's diagnosed or not. No white bread, and bunch of other restrictions. Doctors said that had my brother been put on such a diet as a child he wouldn't be suffering from ADD as badly as he does now. And, he too was diagnosed as a sufferer of "red dye" exposure back in the day.

The anectodes go both ways, chicken and egg style. What's most often stated by the professionals is that Red 40 is mostly present in high-sugar junk food, and it's really a sugar problem. In our case that's not true; he's been getting it in low-sugar yogurt and we don't do a lot of added sugar. Parents report both the sugar and no-sugar connection.

Some ADD kids have been shown to do better on a high-protein diet and with Omega-3 fatty acids added to their diet - that's where no white bread comes in, it's all carbs that become sugar easy, while whole wheat has protein and Omega-3's (we only eat whole wheat). I've always baked with flax seed meal (an easy way to get Omega-3's) and I've added Omega-3 to our diet in the form of Flax Seed Oil, as it is all kinds of good for you anyway. Kiddo is actually tolerating a teaspoon of flax seed oil every morning, provided he can chase it with the new dye-free gummi vitamins I found him, lol.

Red Dye was banned in Britain last year because of studies like these:

It's been banned in most of Europe for a very long time (since '71 in Sweden). Oh, I've read that it was on CNN and the FDA is investigating, but I haven't found links for that yet.

Yeah, I been doing a lot of reading :)

I don't think this is a cure-all, there's a good chance he's a bit ADD. But if the violent behavior stopped (full-blown 2-year old style tantrums are part of it and some of the symptoms of a Red 40 reaction), I'd be relieved.

edit: Just wildly guessing 'cause I know your age group, lol. Your brother probably was in the Red 5 group, that dye was banned in 1971 and replaced with Red 40. Red 5 was actually poisoning people!!

I blame it on my mother. He was diagnosed in his teens as ADD, prescribed medication and a strict diet. She didn't enforce either and of course he won't do it as an adult now. So, he now walks in circles and leaves lit cigarettes burning all over the house during the day. He's been fired from over 50 jobs since he was 16 years old because "he forgot that he had a job" and never showed up.

Meh.. my sister takes care of him now. Sort of like having a 30 something year old kid. XD
