Custom music in Everquest IIFollow

#1 Aug 26 2008 at 7:48 PM Rating: Decent
I just spent about 3 hours customizing my music. I renamed mp3s that I had on my computer to the same names as the mp3s in "\Everquest II\music". Then when I launched the game it downloaded all the original files and replaced them. I have heard of people changing these files so is that not true or did I do something wrong?

It's not modding the game; it has about the same effect as a UI mod, so I don't think you broke the EULA. Nothing you're doing is changing gameplay or automating gameplay.

However, there's a good chance that the next time you patch it might re-patch the old music in. You might want to back up that directory so you don't have to spend another three hours renaming files!

The game is going to automatically re-patch every time you log in and since the files you "created" are different from the ones that are "supposed" to be there, the system will self correct to bring you up to date. It may be looking at file size or possibly file creation date or even both of these but the bottom line is that if the files don't match, out they go!

With UI mods, you are putting all the replacement files in a different directory - one that isn't patched by the game system.

Long term, your best bet is just to turn down the in-game music and run in windowed mode with an mp3 player up for music. I often do this when I'm crafting. I also like to run Pandora radio when I'm doing something mindless like grinding writ mobs.
