Even when I was at my brokest (I consider that the time I was laid off from the supervisory position I'd had for 7 years and went on unemployment insurance for five months trying to find something that paid anywhere close to what I had been making) -- I decided that the money for FFXI was still an expense I wanted to continue to incur. I cut my food budget to the bare bones and went on deferment for student loans and had no other fun money at all. I even cancelled half of my mules, so that it was $14.95 a month and I could keep my unemployed "entertainment" expenses at under $15 for guilt-prevention purposes.
FFXI was by far the best entertainment value I could get during my broke period. I would send out a few resumes or do an interview, do some chores to justify my mooching off my then-fiance, and then play the game for 6-8 hours straight because I had nothing else to do.
Even if you do pay $4/month more for extra retainers on top of a fully paid account, I'm willing to bet the hourly expense the average person pays for XIV will still be measured in pennies, nickels, and dimes. If someone with a full account and two retainers is playing for 20 hours a week, they'll be paying about 23 cents an hour. That price drops down if they have a basic or legacy account, or if they play for more than 80 hours a month.
