When you deal with people on the internet, you always have to deal with the issue of internet anonymity. People don't tend to be as considerate because you're only another digital entity. In FFXIV this seems to be compounded by the fact that your actions have less severe consequences. For one, the people you meet in dungeons, you'll not likely interact with again. And then there's the fact, at least from what I've seen so far, that you don't depend so much on others in order to progress as you did in FFXI.

On the contrary, I wish there was a way of adding people from other worlds to your friends list. There were people that I met in dungeons who were friendly and awesome. Sadly I'll not likely meet them again as well.

Anonymity creates a lot of Keyboard Cowboys, Duty Finder makes it that much worse. Adding people from DF as friends would be awesome. I did the first three dungeons with some great, friendly players. I asked the tank I did CB with what server he was on, when he replied Lamia I preceded to throw a fit because he wasn't on Hyperion Smiley: nod

Some people enjoy playing the game and seeing things for the first time, discovering what's to come and learning to play it first hand. It's the same in single player games. Some would prefer to go get a guide or walkthrough and figure out the best way to do everything and steamroll the game with maximum efficiency. Others would prefer to see the game play out, not knowing what's ahead, not knowing what is considered by others to be "the best" way to do things, letting their success or failure depend on their own merits rather than prior experience obtained by others. Of course, by playing the game yourself, you become better at the game and if you decide to play through it again, you may perform better simply due to the knowledge you gained from playing it the first time.

Online games are played by a wide variety of people, and that can sometimes cause a clash of mindsets, especially considering that the content appeals to all types of players. It's exactly the same as it is with single player games, which of course no one would deny. The main difference here is that your actions effect other players. One player is thinking "This should be fun! I've never seen or done this before" while another is thinking "Let's down this run quickly and efficiently so I can get my reward!" There's a constant hostility between groups like this. Personally my recommendation would be to make sure you're playing with like minded people if you have a certain expectation of what they should know. It's reasonable to expect people to, for example, at the very least gear accordingly for their level, but IMO if you're using the duty finder or joining a PUG it should be understood that you're going to get players of varying skill, equipment, and mindset.

+1 to this hardcore. You said what was bugging my mind for quite some time now.

Especially when it comes to the watching of youtube walkthrough's, reading of guides. I get the relevance and understand the attributes.... but for a MMO less than a month past it's official release? There's just something "off" about expecting that from players in a brand new game.

There is no exp loss death penalty. Party-wipes come and go. I just wish people were more understanding about the whole thing. I've been in parties where the Tank and Healer were fighting the whole time and me and the BLM just remain silent; can't wait until the really hard instances come. There's no need to be that stressed out over this game.
I like to mention to the group that an instance is my first time. I feel that it's important to let them know this, as I wont know where no not go. The Youtube idea is great, I've watched runs of all the dungeons I've done beforehand.

As a tank, I've watched videos and read strats before every first-time dungeon run. Then again, I have MMO experience so it's the norm for me. Those new to MMOs don't know where to go. Also, I don't remember many exp groups in FFXI where the tank and healer were at each other's throats. I didn't experience that until I jumped into WoW. Don't get me wrong--I don't miss FFXI tedium one bit. I do miss the party composure though.

Funnily enough the guy who grabbed me into his FC the second he saw me on the server... was a guy I absolutely let rip on in an XP party in XI for being a diabolical tank at the time (I was on RDM back then). It's an ongoing source of humour now though (and the tanking's improved substantially)

Someone on FC last night was going on about being in either an AK or Castrum (I forget which) run last night with a total pillock of a MNK running his mouth off and laying into newbies - wondering if it's the same one or if we had a minor infestation of pillock pugilists last night.

Unfortunately, the bigger issue is not so much the elitism, but what it ends up doing in the long run. You end up with all of those players who don't fit into the little 1-2% of the snotty playerbase, dreading to enter into any content with people they don't know. I've run some of the end-game content on several different jobs now, just to see where everything goes in different roles, and that's just my perspective on learning the instances. Also, watching a video or reading about a fight is never the same as experiencing it, though knowledge beforehand is always helpful.

The game's been out less than a month, and people truly need to get over themselves. Constantly shouting for experienced only, etc. is a bit ridiculous at this point. I actually saw a shout for 'relics only' last night, and it wasn't to farm the tomestones for relics, it meant actually only inviting people who already had relics. Seriously? I've also seen people ragequit after finding out DF picked up people simply doing their story-mode quests in CM and Prae. *shakes head*

If someone's new, I always try to impart whatever knowledge I have if possible, it takes half a minute at most to summarize most boss fights. Yet people would rather wipe and waste 20 minutes, instead of giving a low-down.

All this being said, the fault doesn't lie entirely with the players, SE is to blame as well. If the abandonment penalty was steeper on the DF, people would be more inclined to spend a moment instructing, instead of chewing out a random party member.

So peeps are expecting to find GREAT groups using DF now? Who's the noob there?
If someone were to give me a hard time, I'd ask "what did you expect using DF?"
If they persist (like an ***** I'd finish it with "Ohhh, because obviously with your attitude you have no friends on your server"

I usually read up on fights but the majority, as a tank, you don't really need to know too much other than :

  • Face it away from the rest of the group.
  • Tank it away from the group as far as possible so as to minimize AoE damage on the casters and give them room to spread out.
  • Run away from the fire.
  • Decide if it's better to run to the group for certain mechanics or stay there (Titan bombs for example).

Ifrit's boring for a tank and standard fare. Garuda I looked to see the basic layout and the whole clockwise mechanic. Titan's another boring one outside of riding timers for mitigating table throw.

And yeah, having come from FFXI endgame, WoW endgame, and Rift endgame the majority of the fights I just go "Oh, ok so this is like XXX, got it (i.e. Brayflox last boss = Grobbulus, etc.).

One thing I *do* have to mention though is despite the majority of the populace's inability to read Square-Enix has done an absolutely tremendous job with the tutorial system in this game. It's not only there to teach you aspects of the game, but the majority of it is also there to teach brand new people to MMOs how to play an MMO. It's why I've gotten tired of answering the same questions in FC ("how i materua!?!?" "where u go airship!?!?" "wut do chocobo!?!?" "how i mine fish!?!?") when every question is answered either via doing the story mission or just reading the damn tutorials.

I've, thankfully, only had a few ******* to deal with so far in FFXIV and one was on Garuda HM. It was a WHM who refused to cast cure because "Stoneskin is more mana efficient" and just spammed that.... which would have worked if he actually helped heal the whole group during add burn phases AND didn't stand in front of adds and then died to Slipstream every single time. He then tried to state it's a tank fault that we "lost aggro and it came to kill me; my brother's a dragoon and can hold hate better than you and I never get hit standing in front of garuda when other tanks tank".

DF is good when you can't find anyone else to run with. What I eventually want to do is find a FC that runs dungeons together very often. I still haven't found that yet, but I won't give up the search! I'm hoping they'll eventually let Legacy players transfer. So, if I can't find that FC community on Excalibur I'll try my luck elsewhere.
