Sending Retainers to Other Cities..... :: World of Warcraft

When I was fiddling with my retainers I noticed an option to send them out to other cities. I was wondering what the point of this was exactly. You can access them for storage in all 3 cities without doing anything special. Does each city have it's own Market board AH or something? I would really hope not since this is 2013 and every other game unifies AHs, sometimes across all servers.

Maybe for vendors? Do the three cities have unified vendors? Also maybe for special retainer quests or nodes in those areas for gathering something.
