Crafting and You..Follow

#1 Jun 23 2013 at 10:41 AM Rating: Default
I come to you as someone who has not crafted a single item(in 1.0 nor ARR)

I spent my beta weekends in their entirety in bringing two separate characters to over level 20+ and next weekend I will begin a craft. I'd like to begin crafting/gathering with a bit more knowledge than I already have(which is little) as the Official FFXIV website still doesn't provide much information.

I'd like your impressions:

What DoL/DoH you picked up..
What you made..
The difficulties, the ease..
What level you made it to..
The use of the items/The items versus quest pick-ups
Also, can anyone "hypothesize" where the 'money will be' ? (Whether it be gathering or crafting, where's the largest profit margin versus time spent)
Additional thoughts?

I'm looking for a loose synopsis of your experience with crafting and gathering.

Thanks for your input!

Goldsmith and Miner here. I'm level 7 and 5 respectively.

I made the following items:

Copper Ingots, Copper Wristlets, Copper earring, Coppper rings, Whetstones.

The difficulty scales depending on your level and the item's craft level. Making a Copper ring as a level 3 Goldsmith is very difficult if not impossible.

The above is the menu for gathering, a similar menu exists when crafting an item:

[img=238546]

In regards to the usefulness of items: You can create and use a copper ring and choker and earring way before the quests give you one of your own (at least in Ul'Dah's quests). Again i'm a lower level crafter so my knowledge is very limited.

So far, crafting has been fun and rewarding and rather addictive. The main difficulty I've noticed is that it's possible to run out of a crystal type very quickly when leveling. It's difficult to say how you are supposed to obtain them if not from other crafters who farm them. For instance, I've run out of wind crystals early on and leveled all the way to 23 this beta phase; without a single additional wind crystal to show for it. I would assume the way to do it would be to trade crystal you gather as your respective field class and barter/trade with another who has the crystals you need.

Either trade them, purchase them with quest gil or find mobs that drop them. Unless it has changed only certain mobs drop certain crystals...this is still true guys?

I Leveled Cooking to about 10
I made a few buff foods but mostly mats to make buff foods
You can buy food from venders for cheaper than it is to make them at low lvls but thats normal.
I did have a hard time finding some mats so I needed to lvl alchemy to about 6 to make it myself.

I believe cooking will always have a place and will make decent Gil as long as the buffs keep going up in numbers Went from +1 stat food to +4 stat food in just 10 lvls .

My only.. not issue.. but I wish was alittle better is that to make butter i need to make the salt, than about 4 different items ( so 5 fire crystals already) than make the butter.. which inturn in a mat in somthing else. Just wastes alot of crystals I think this makes it so you dont lvl so fast i guess.

I've mined a lot of crystals/shards...figured those were for crafting.

Got my miner to level 7 but will get into the crafting next weekend.

which kinda of shards did you get from mining?

Mining has lightning and Wind, so far in Central alone. I'm sure Western and Eastern have different stuff too.

I've been doing clothcraft and mining on this go round. I mined enough crystals to get me to level 5 in mining, and that's enough crystals to get me to level 10-15 easily in clothcraft. I hope.

Fire and water crystals. This was right outside of Uld.

Thanks for all the replies!

Are the only "ways" of procuring crystals from combat and mining?

I wonder if I could use that as a supplemental income(if the above is true) so as to not hinder my DoW/DoM leveling too much. I could obviously mine on the go and sell those and crystals collected from combat on the market to crafters. Or even trade for items made..

Interesting! Keep the information coming guys!

1) Leveled all of them
2) Crafted everything listed at least once
3) Every thing was easy for crafting due to the fact the guild suppliers sold pretty much everything for cheap
4) level 15 for all of them
5) There were only a few items that you crafted that you wouldn't also get from quests or a gear vendor
6) I'd guess right now that DoL at lower levels, and DoH at higher levels for the Materia Melds
7) Gathering is rather dull, Run up to gathering node, hit it until it's gone. Not as painful as FFXI though and more interactive than WoW or GW2.
I've not seen any statements from the Devs on what is just in for beta at the moment. If the Guild vendors end up working more like they did in XI, I think you'll see a lot more effort in the crafting and gathering. Not to mention a good deal more money changing hands.

The DoH jobs are very reminiscent of what was in XI, even the recipes are very similar. They pretty much all require mats that are crafted by another job. Carpenter for example requires lots of Brass items early, which requires Blacksmith. So it will be rather difficult or expensive to only level one DoH at a time. Honestly I'd say it'd be kind of silly to do since unlike other MMOs there's nothing stopping you from leveling all of the jobs.

Wanted to add as well.

Mining : I was able to mine Water, Wind, Lightning, and Fire Crystals
Botanist: Wind, Ice, Earth

Those were just on the level 10 Nodes I was chopping on. It's possible and most likely that all 6 will be gatherable from either DoL jobs

I had worked in 1.0 to level all the crafting classes and gathering classes. During the beta I broke out my needle and started weaving a little to test it out. I found the system better than 1.0 however I felt like i didn't have enough crafting points to really do more than succeed making a few items. With the crafting gear attributes building a full set of armour geared towards crafting goals should make for an interesting system.

I hope to test it more next weekend.

I can't wait to see what end-game crafting holds personally:

Rare drops that can only be used by certain Crafters in creating some special gear, whether it's got a few more points of int or a special resistance for a particular dungeon..

Those are the types of craft that really draw me in..

I mostly only did crafting and mining because i didn wanna re-do main story quests.

I got my goldsmithing to lvl 19, and i must say it was pretty fun, you have a Control Points bar and get some nice abilities a you level up that help alot, the main thing i like about crafting is this time getting HQ's feel like a real goal you can do, once i got like 10-12 level above an item you can HQ it if you try. If you go to my load stone i took pictures of items i made and gathered. http://na.beta.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/character/1813562/blog/9047/

The great thing about crafting is that you can gather HQ mats, witch really boost the quality score, i got my Miner to lvl 15 so i can get all my items for free, get HQ mats, and the main reason cause thats my favorit class lol, just like the crafting they really added some nice ways to get HQ mats, at lvl 13-14 miner when mineing copper ore id say got a HQ copper ore 1 to every 30-40 hits, not to bad.

My idea is the money is in Materia melding. Items start getting slots around lvl 16, so materia in my mind will be threw all the levels, and the low level materia had some decent stats like "acc+2" not to bad if you add the fact you could have 8-12 opens slots to put that materia in. I believe the possibilities for armour builds are going to be really nice to do, and make a huge different in fighting,

My thoughts honestly i cant wait to make my very own custom gear tailored to my play style, and make lots of gil

So far I've leveled Weaving to 11, Alchemy to 11, Goldsmithing to 16, Mining to 17, and Botany to 11.

Weaving made: *Shocker* light clothes (but no shoes - leather craft I'm guessing). Everything was hempen up to 10, but the level 11-15 recipes were calling for cotton.
Alchemy made: A wide variety of things. At 11 you can potions, ethers, antidotes, and eye drops already (and 3 at a time). I was also making tomes for Arcanist and wands for Conjurer.
Goldsmithing made: Earrings, rings, and neck pieces. Also, several THM and BLM weapons.
Mining found: Rocks, ore, and crystals. I used materials from mining in all of the crafts I leveled.
Botany found: Logs, Branches, Culinary ingredients, ingredients for alchemy, ingredients for weaving.

Ease/Difficulty - Crafting up to level 10 was fairly easy. You can buy almost every ingredient you'll need (except for crystals) from the guild vendors. I took goldsmithing to 16, and I could make all but 4 recipes with items bought from the guild. So assuming I push goldsmithing to 20 and open up new recipes, I'd guess there would be more things I couldn't make with guild bought items. Based on that, I'm guessing 20 is about the level when you'll need to find your own ingredients.

I also found weaving to be uniquely frustrating in that every recipe up to lvl 11 required making 3-7 spools of the same level 1 hempen thread. It's a whole lot of make thread >>> make cloth >>> make clothes.

The difficulties in gathering are that it's a time sink and little bit mind numbing.

Uses vs Quest Obtained Items. - They're the same items, but you can have them all! A few unique items. I found Weaving particularly useful early on because I could make gear that improved crafting/gathering.

The money will be -- In having multiple crafts and gathering leveled. I'm also not sure how many people max a gathering job. They are... tedious.

I was never big into crafting. I was always the guy with two gathering professions. My Fishing skill will be maxed out for sure, though. I don't know, maybe I'll take up Blacksmithing or something, but I'll most likely just end up mining minerals and putting them up on the Auction House.

Materia Melding sounds cool but I don't know much about it yet...

One thing I still don't understand: how is Materia gathered/produced?

And is it 'gathered ' in a "raw form" and then synthesized into a usable item?

Thanks!

The Materia is made from gear that have been spirt bound to you, you convert that into materia but you will lose the item, now you need carbonized materia to meld it all togather with the gear, this im still working on that ,the game kinda explained to me that the dark matter you can gather has a chance of being carbonized materia when gather it, idk it didn really make sense to me and couldn find any, i will have to try again next weekend. Thats all i know so far, materia quest is at lvl 19.

Went heavy on the crafting here.

The base crafting crafts are Blacksmith, Armorer and Goldsmith. All the primary tools are created by these classes.

Secondary tool classes are Carpentry and Blacksmith, from what I remember. So for what we have so far (and I'm only listing for tradeskill and gathering related items)...

Armorer -- Relies primarily on Ice crystals and Mining for components. Creates Alembics (Alchemy) and Frying Pans (Culinary).
Blacksmith -- Relies primarily on Fire crystals and Mining for components. Also uses Carpentry sub-components (Lumber), Weaving sub-components (Cloth) and Goldsmith sub-components (anything Brass or stone related). Creates all Hammers (Armorer, Blacksmith, Goldsmith, Mining), Saws (Carpentry), Culinary Knives, Head Knives (Leatherworking), Files (Blacksmithing), Awls (Leatherworking), Mining Picks (Mining) and Hatchets (Botany).
Carpentry -- Relies primarily on Wind crystals and Botany for components. Also uses Blacksmith/Armorer sub-components (Ingots and metal parts). Creates Spinning Wheels (Weaving) and Grinding Wheels (Goldsmith). Also creates some tradeskill equipment (Shoes).
Alchemy -- Relies primarily on Water crystals and Botany and Mining for components. Creates some Wands (Conjurer) and books (Arcanist) and essential sub-components (like Rubber, Beeswax, Growth Formulae)
Goldsmith -- Relies primarily on Wind crystals and Mining for components. Creates Needles (Weaving) and CP increasing gear.
Leatherworking -- Relies primarily on Earth crystals, general monster slaughter and Mining for components (Alumen required for Aldgoat Skin and higher). Creates a significant portion of both DoH and DoL equipment (Head, Waist, Feet, Gloves).
Weaving -- Relies primarily on Lightning crystals and Botany for components. Creates the majority of DoH and DoL equipment (Chest, Head, Legs, Hands)
Culinary -- Relies primarily on Fire and Water crystals and Botany and Fishing for components. Some cooked foods give bonuses to tradeskills and gathering.

If your goal is to be as self-sufficient as possible in Tradeskilling, you should level everything other than Culinarian. That will cover all the required contingencies.

Carpenter is the easiest tradeskill to level due to the proximity of the available trees and wind crystals. You can easily level your Carpentry up with pretty much just lumber and wind crystals, but it'll be kind of boring. Blacksmith is in a similar boat, but you'd have to go to Western Thanalan instead. Armorer is not due to the need to go to Gridania with a Botanist for Ice crystals.

If harvestables and sub-components are removed from vendors, Weaving will be the most annoying to level. Moko Grass and Cotton Boils can't be harvested until your Botanist is level 11, minimum, and you will use A LOT of them. Leatherworking is a distant second since you need to claim mobs in order to get their drops, as far as I could tell, but you can still get a lot of skins when you're over-leveled.

Crystal farming with harvesting skills appear to be by zone. Out of the ones I've harvested:

North Shroud: Primarily Earth crystals
East Shroud: Primarily Wind crystals
Central Shroud: Primarily Wind crystals (with some Ice)
South Shroud: Primarily Wind crystals
Central Thanalan: Primarily Lightning crystals (with some Wind)
Western Thanalan: Primarily Water crystals (with some Fire)
Eastern Thanalan: Primarily Fire crystals
Middle La Noscea: Primarily Water crystals

I may have missed a few things in the mental info dump. But I'm pretty sure this information is correct.

Edit: Also, Carbonized Matter REQUIRES a level 16+ Gatherer.

He harvested it, most likely with a Miner, since the Botanist one is in Eastern Shroud.

I found it while mining -- it was in a rocky outcrop in the northern part of the zone. I was level 16 miner, and I think I had about a 65% gather chance. There was also level 3 dark matter.
