Hi, newbie question. What's the difference between a Linkshell and a Free Company? I know what a Linkshell is from FF11,
but unsure of Free Company, thanks.

Linkshell is for communication only, Free Company is for events, etc.
They added Free Companies to provide more control for the leaders over rankings, etc. We don't know much but it's basically supposed to be what linkshells were in FFXI, with much more options and structure.

Think of a Free Company more like a guild in any other MMO.
Linkshells are chat rooms.

The impressions that I seemed to get is that there's the Free Companies, and then there are the 3 different companies of the 3 different cities that you can join as well, but you can only choose one. So is there a rank type of deal from the FFXIV version of these 3 companies/cities?

So the Karma Zameleons will need to make a LS and Free Company?
And housing, at the start I believe housing is just going to be Free Company based. So any benefits that come with your housing.
I believe you can only join one Free Company, but Linkshells you can have several so you can have one just to chat with irl friends, we used one in 1.23 to organize the members of our static group, things like that.

Grand Companies, which you're thinking of that are tied to the cities, are more storyline based, and you can choose whichever you want to join, regardless of starting city. There are ranks within these that you can get (well I'm assuming the rankings will still be there in ARR) and those ranking give you access to different items, rewards, etc.
Free Companies are entirely player run, and have nothing to do with storyline or have any restrictions whatsoever from the game itself. They're just more structured linkshells basically.

I don't think that's what our plan is atm. Not saying that it won't happen in the future, but most people like to pick who they play with after seeing how they play. Karma Zameleons, for the moment anyway, is just so we can all hook up in game and have our own chat channel basically. What becomes of it in the future, well who's to say?

ok in FFXI Linkshells were pretty muxch guilds...
In FFXIV LSes will be chat channel (basically) while free companies are guilds... sooo why even have linkshells in FFXIV?
Also housing will be tied to free companies? so a non FC player couldnt own z house? sounds odd

What I understand is that housing is going to be quite expensive. A single player would come up with funds to afford it only with great difficulty.
Linkshells = chat room - Why would you want to limit yourself to one chat room? More opportunities to socialize is better if you ask me. More groups of friends and more opportunities to find people who want to participate in similar content.
Free company = Guild - I like the sounds of the leveling and rewards system for free companies. Ultimate summons, rewards for content completion, level progression as a company. I just think this goes beyond most guilds I have experienced.

fine with me.. i like difficulty.. Im sure it wont be half as bad/expensive as getting a relic weapon in FFXI before dynamis was soloable an di got TWO in that "era" so Im sure I can handle getting my own house in FFXIV

XI had to send a lot of external linkshell controls to third party programs, such as the modern Guildworks or the old FFDKP put together by Ismarc of Seraph.
Free Companies will have those kind of tools built in, somewhat, probably through the Lodestone.
Linkshells in XIV are purely chat based and will fill the role that "social" linkshells did in XI. A place to talk and organize spontaneous events. You can belong to up to eight linkshells, I think.
Free Companies will be more like HNM linkshells in FFXI. More formal, with a stricter hierarchy and scheduled events.
