While I wouldn't put it past companies to do things like that to make you buy the next new offering, I think the lesser lifespan is just from the fact that there are more ways for consoles these days to break.
I've been very fortunate. I still have a working nintendo and SNES from my childhood. My son is still using my launch xbox 360 and I have never had a red ring of death. Although, for the past few months, you do have to sweet talk the 360 to open it's tray so you can switch out games.
