I saw that this morning and lol'd for all the hardcore IX players that have played it to death and never found this before.

That guide really was terrible, mind you.

The FFIX guide was the best advertisement for Gamefaqs ever.

I never actually bought the guide for IX because I remember there was a free online guide you could go to. Of course, I was a freshmen in college when it came out and my computer was a horribly out of date Mac where the airport card didn't even work, so I remember going down to the computer lab and printing off 100's of pages of the guide and using up my entire paper quota for the semester. Thankfully I was an art student who never had to write papers or I would have been utterly screwed.

You know what the crazy thing was? You didn't even need the guide to access playonline. And I remember playonline being mostly word for word, so it seems like the guide was a quick scam for easy money.

However, in 2000, most people were connected over 56k modems, so you can kind of see why using playonline by itself was sort of a pain.

Well if you thought we were talking about XI because that's what you read you developed dyslexia. If you watched the youtube video and thought it was XI you developed amnesia. And if you thought running back-and-forth for that quest 13 times just to get a stinking Protect Ring was worth it you developed insanity Smiley: lol

Playonline was indeed the name of the site you went to to lookup quest info for the guide for FFIX, so the confusion is understandable.

I suppose I didn't lose much by leaving the FFIX guide in the cafeteria at school shortly after I got the game. Even back then my friends and I were discussing how crappy the quality was even compared to the previous Brady Guides. If I recall there were parts in the guide that went something like, "If you really want all of the best secrets, go to Playonline.com". It was quite stupid to not include all content and ask kids to go online to get what they paid for before the internet was quite as universal as it was a few years later.

SaGa Frontier's guide was pretty terrible as well if you consider just how in depth that game was. Although without it I know I had no idea what to do my first attempt to play it.

BradyGames has always been quite notorious for criminally crappy guides. Missing side quests, missing information on the main storylines, and my personal favorite "We're not going to tell you anything about the last boss so that's a surprise for you! Good luck, Gumshoe!" cop out. I mean, if someone wanted to be surprised, they wouldn't have bought a guide in the first place.

I loved the FF8 guide. I also have a handful of them from older SNES-era games that were all good.

FF9 was where that all came crashing down.

To find out what came next, visit Playonline.com

I think this just underscores how stupidly hard some of the quests in IX were. Excalibur II anyone? I still can't get 100 on that goddam sword fight at the beginning, my best is 96 Smiley: bah

So many 98s and 99s... Tried to do a complete playthrough a year or two back and spent WAY too long attempting that part... It was all for naught though, since the very end of my 3rd disc locks up right when you get to Terra before disc 4 >.>. Don't know why though, since I've only played through the whole game once and have always kept very good care of my games <.<.

Wint it's hilarious that you bring this up... my friend and I bought FFIX when it first came out, and we played it over a three day weekend from high school. We got to the sword fight, and were determined to get 100. Let me just say we spent approximately 1/2 of our weekend trying to get the 100 lol!!! We finally accomplished it and my reaction was something like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFlcqWQVVuU Smiley: lol

I don't think I've ever been so excited about a video game accomplishment before hahaha

Ahhh good times!

I don't think it took me very long to get 100 when I tried the game again on the PS3. Despite my score, Queen Brahne was not impressed Smiley: disappointed

I remember that guide, I read that thing constantly. It was quite cool at the time because the internet was still in its prehistoric stages.

Ah brady games. I think that guide has been a troll all this time.

I once watched a brady games guide of ff7 to find out how to get hardedge (sword in the manual with cloud on a motorcycle). What kind of guide shows the hero using the best weapon available at the time (shinra building), but doesn't mention where it comes from?
