I do not play DAoC, however I am interested to know the timeline involving the software company's release of a new version that resulted in the public outcry for these "classic" servers.
I am a former player of StarWars:Galaxies and I believe we are going through a similar issue involving a complete overhaul of the game against the subscribers wishes.
Any info would he helpfull.

I think it was about 1.5-2years before the classic servers were created. In any case the classic servers came about as a form of several opinion polls done by mythic via the login screen in the game.

DAOC came about in october, 2001
each year, a new expansion has come out
october 2002, SI
October 2003, ToA
October 2004, Catacombs
October 2005, Darkness Rising
Classics came out maybe July or August, 2005, largely because of disparities created by ToA (so nearly 2 years as poster above mentioned).
The months may not be exactly right, but they are close to when things happened.
