Go to http://web.mit.edu/fastcart/Public/FFXI/mugido/ for more information and screen shots. It's also more humorous.
--- Day 01 --- July 19th, 2005
Stood in
Eldieme Necropolis and
Ghelsba Outpost lines three times to get the NPC I wanted. I logged in as soon as the game would let me. When I first got in line, there were 40 people in line in Ghelsba Outpost and 634 on the entire server of Midgardsormr. When I reached the front exactly two hours later, there were 84 in zone, and 913 on /sea all. Two more runs and ten hours later, and I got the Mugido (Galka 3B) I wanted.
--- Day 02 --- July 20th, 2005
I figured out how to use Rendezvous Points. I took Mugido out to Konschtat Highlands with my level 15 Red Mage because I was under the mistaken impression NPCs only get xp if we do. We only killed easy preys and got 300 xp. I was shocked when he disappeared because it had only been ten minutes.
At the Rendezvous Point, I saw that he got were new pants and boots.
--- Day 03 --- July 21st, 2005
As soon as engaged my first mob, i got R0 and lost connection. ;; The beginning of my Verizon problems that a lot of people experienced.
--- Day 04 --- July 22nd, 2005
Started xping in Zi'Tah. Actually counted kills and learned he despawned after 15 kills. Mugido got new gloves, body piece, and pants.
After this call, new features were unlocked at the Rendezvous Point. I chose Attacker, TP alert, and HP alert.
--- Day 05 --- July 23rd, 2005
Mugido got level 31. I learned the drop pearl trick from the forums. I was able to call Mugido three times this day and got him to level 32. Also, I got a cut scene from
Luto Mewrilah and bought a
Butterfly Axe for Mugido. When I gave it to Luto, Luto called Mugido a she. ;;
--- Day 06 --- July 24th, 2005
Mugido seemed to needed to skill Great Axe. After the first session of this day, he got
Leaping Boots or
Winged Boots. He still missed a lot. I accidentally clicked him for the first time, but re-clicked before he despawned. After second session, he got level 33, but went back to
Scale Mail.
--- Day 07 --- July 25th, 2005
After first session, there was no visible change in gear.
Second session, I started partying with a Thief named Edgetheninja (AKA Edge) and his NPC named Nanako. We fought level 51-55
Goblin Bouncer and
Goblin Hunter near Ifrit's Cauldron. Mugido attained level 34 and upgraded his body piece to
Doublet (level 11),
Cotton Doublet (level 23), or
Linen Doublet (level 33). His gloves changed too.
--- Day 08 --- July 26th, 2005
After first session, Mugido went back to Scale Mail again. I was beginning to think it was because I keep dropping the Signal Pearl, but it seems random. While fighting our second mob, Edge Tricked Attacked onto Nanako, gave Nanako hate and she died. ^^
Second session, Mugido got level 35,
Centurion Gauntlets and
Centurion Greaves. Unfortunately, he also got Subligar... ;;
--- Day 09 --- July 27th, 2005
First session, Mugido got rid of the Subligar (thank Altana).
Second session, we added a Black Mage named Omiss and his NPC named Armittie. Unfortunately, we tried to train too many mobs for Omiss to nuke and we all died (more info and screen shots at my website). A wasted session. ;; But, we ll got Raise III.
But, Luto gave me the second weapon upgrade cut scene. I gave Mugido a
Greataxe. Luto still called him she.
--- Day 10 --- July 28th, 2005
We got another Black Mage named Btaru and his NPC named Raka. We successfully pulled off nuke-Ra this time. No PCs died this time. But, Bomb Tosses killed Nanako and Raka. ;;
Mugido got level 36 and went back to Doublet armor again. He also got either
Chain Hose (level 24) or
Silver Hose (level 36).
Second run, we got Chain #7 once with no NPCs or PCs dying. Then we got chain #6 and our NPCs despawned. Mugido went back Leaping or Winged Boots.
--- Day 11 --- July 29th, 2005
First run, No Black Mages this day. Edge and I tried to kill
Goblin Reapers and
Goblin Diggers fast to make up for the lack of a Black Mage. Unfortunately, these are level 41-45, so we got less xp than usual. Mugido got RSE body piece. ;;
Second run, we went back to Goblin Bouncers and Goblin Hunters. They were a little suicide bomb happy and nearly killed our NPCs. Mugido got level 37,
Lizard Jerkin, and
Greaves (level 24) or
Silver Greaves (level 36).
--- Day 12 --- July 30th, 2005
First run, nothing exciting. Edge and I tried to fast chain off of
Goblin Robbers,
Master Coeurls, and
Big Jaws. While they died quickly, avoiding
Goblin Traders slowed us down. So, we went back to Bouncers and Hunters. At the Rendezvous Point,
Centurion Greaves and either
Chainmail (level 24) or
Silver Mail (level 36).
He got level 38 during the second run. At the Rendezvous Point, he got the
Greaves (level 24) or
Silver Greaves (level 36) back.
But, there was an extra dialog at the bottom of the Rendezvous Point menu. It said, "Let's talk about appearances" (see website for pictures). This gave me the option of letting him have headgear. I said yes, summoned him again at the Rendezvous Point, and he had on a
Faceguard (level 10). When I asked him to change it, I couldn't tell whether he had some kind of hairpin or nothing at all. When I asked him to change it a third time, he had the Faceguard on again. So, I kept it at that.
--- Day 13 --- July 31st, 2005
A boring first run. Same ole, same ole. After the run at the Rendezvous Point, looked like Mugido had a Scale Greaves retrograde, but a
Cuisses (level 40, if that's what they really are) upgrade. Too bad the head gear is so ugly. Once again, I tried making him change it. But, I couldn't tell whether he had a hairpin or nothing again. So, it's back to Faceguard.
For the second run, we decided to try
Xarcabard. The demons were so much easier and quicker to kill. And, because I play Samurai, I intimidated them a lot. We only killed regular demons and left the
Evil Eyes alone. We found a new xp spot now. He got level 39.
Mugido still had the Faceguard, but got some gawd awful pants and feet gear. I don't know what kind of pants (if any) or gloves (could be level 1 RSE) he's wearing. The shoes are
Garish Pumps (level 30),
Mist Pumps (level 30), or
Mannequin Pumps (level 35). They could also be
Seer's Pumps, but it's hard to tell. They are definitely pumps in an case. ;;
--- Day 14 --- August 1st, 2005
First run, more demons. We tried an Evil Eye, it casted
Bind on me and it stuck! So, no more Evil Eyes. We kill the regular demons fast enough anyway. At the Rendezvous Point, Mugido looked pants-less with level 1 RSE boots.
Second run, he got level 40. After the run he had different boots and pants (thank Altana). I tried switching his headgear again to no avail. I talked with Luto in Jeuno, and nothing new there.
This was all before the
maintenance.
--- Day 15 --- August 2nd, 2005
I only did one run today. And, I did it solo because of POL
problems. I am not sure whether this is dumb luck or SE improved them NPC AI. At first, Mugido and I were using weapon skills at the same time unless I managed to see his tp warning amid combat spam. Then, he started using weapon skills after me. We did Sidewinder > Armor Break for Impaction. Then, we did Sidewinder > Iron Tempest for Distortion.
Mugido lasted for 20 kills. This must be what SE meant in yesterday's announcement by "After certain conditions are met, players will be able to keep their Fellowship NPC around for extended adventuring." Seems to be based on the NPC's level. I'm not sure whether it's linear (an extra kill every two levels) or if there's some SE voodoo magic involved.
He went back to pumps at the Rendezvous Point. They look like
Brais (level 11) or
Cotton Brais (level 23). No luck changing his head gear again. I hope I'm not resetting something (a la voodoo) every time I try...
