Day 7

Before calling, traded Luto an Uchigatana and set NPC fighting style to Shield.

Teled to Yhoat, and without really thinking it through, attacked a crawler. I backed off to buff the NPC up and let him do his thing. Protect, Shell... before I could cast Haste on him, he was giving the low HP warning (which is easy to miss since it's in /say and makes no mention of HP). I ran up to melee & threw him a Cure 3 and Cure 2... which was good enough to pull hate. Unfortunately he chose that moment to use Tachi: Goten, which did unspectacular damage, drew aggro back to him, and got him 1-shotted before I could get off another Cure 3. @.@

This taught me what most probably instinctively knew...

1. WHM Chat Filters and NPC Chat Filters do not mix. Part of the reason he got so low so quickly was because I'd blocked a bunch of damage text for an XP party earlier in the evening. In the 4 seconds it took me to remove them... He probably lost 75~80% of his life.

2. The NPC, like any of us, shouldnt be left to his own devices against a mob 10 levels above him. If I wouldnt Lv 30 PL a PC against a particular mob... I sure as hell shouldnt try it with my NPC. Lesson learned.

3. The use of a Tachi:Goten opens up a number of SC possibilities for me... if I can manage not to completely waste my calls. My goal is to, at some point in the future, figure out a macro to SC/MB with him when he say's he's ready. No fuss... no muss.

And finally... 4. I have to be the worst NPC worker-outer on my server. 7 calls... only 2~3 of which have been successful (ie he left when he was ready, not when one of us died or I had to run for my life). He may never hit 31 at this rate.

Fortunately... he didnt get hit with any major downgrades to his armor.

This is tougher than it might seem from a mage perspective. Its been easier/less taxing to solo many of the mobs I'm pitting him against. I end up babysitting him and trying to fight at the same time... its a lot to juggle.

I summoned my NPC for the 7th (and 8th) time last night. On the 7th time I go and talked to the Quest Mithra, and finally she gave me the option to change weapons. I am not sure, but I think I could have gotten the options earlier if I had my Signal pearl equipped when I talked to her. I am not certain about that, could just be my bad luck that I didn't get the option after 5th and 6th summon.

There are only a few armors with the same looks. The rest do have their own distinctive look though. Like the breastplate (lvl40) and mythril breastplate (lvl50) on some NPC fellows.

Question. If you select healer type, and by what it seems your npc becomes a PLD. If your npc hits 50, do you think that he could raise you? Just a thought. I haven't died with mine yet, so i dont know, but it would be freakin cool if that could happen.

According to the Update annoucement, your NPC is unsummoned when you are K'Oed so I don't think it will raise.

I'm not sure that +1's will ever be allowed for your NPC, but just dealing with starting out, it's definitely not. You have to be very basic. Try the level 1 polearm without +1.

Edit/Add: Also, I don't know if you have or not, but you have to speak with Luto and get the cutscene of her asking for a weapon before you can even do this. If she has not given you the CS yet, you have to keep working with your NPC for a bit and try again.

anyone tried trading a bow, or weapon like that?
#412 Jul 27 2005 at 12:45 PM Rating: Decent
I believe you can't trade ranged weapons.

I know this is a long topic and my chances of a reply are slim, but has anyone found out what shields you can trade to your NPC at each trade-in tier? When trading them, do you have to trade a weapon with the shield at the same time or one at a time?

My NPC is currently lvl 33, Attacker type, using an Uchigatana.

People have been mentioning about downgrading armor after dropping the Signal Pearl to get a new one, well I haven't noticed that personaly.

She changed armor a lot, wether I dropped the pearl or not.

Last night, the NPC suggested I go talk to Luto again, but Luto didn't tell me anything new. I'm hoping she will suggest I upgrade the weapon tonight.

Has anyone found out which Great Katana they can use after the Uchigatana? I figure I'll try out a Nodachi.

ANd the upgrade for G.Katana is........Tachi.

Know it sound stupid, but when Luto asks for an upgrade she wont accepct the Nodachi, Gunromaru, Okanehira, Kanesada or the Kotetsu. I made a trip to Norg and tried all of them out. On a hunch i tried the Tachi and she took it, sucks huh.

o.O

Wow! Was this at Ren Point? If so, which prompt got him to tell you this? That's pretty far out.

I think when you call your NPC he/she should be shown cleaning their weapon or something instead of just standing there.

She suggested I talk to Luto when I chose the Let's chat. option.
Instead of talking about the ghelsba dragon (why won't she get over that?) she suggested I talk to luto.

But, unfortunetly Luto simply said nothing was new.
Well try again tonight.

That really sucks for the Great Katana 'upgrade' but I figure we'll have to let them use the Tachi for it to then upgrade to the Nodachi?

Today Luto mentioned my NPC asking for an upgrade to her weapon.

I'd given her the Ash Staff at start.

Today I tried giving the following:
Holly Staff
Holly Pole
Freesword's Staff

still no deal.

The one she did finally accept (had to travel to Windy to get it):
Ash Pole

So, after Ash Staff, trade Luto the Ash Pole.

Maybe the above mentioned will be accepted later, holding onto them for now ^^

My hope is that there will be a follow up quest of some sort after you have partied with you NPC enough times or get him/her to a certain level that will allow the NPC to stay out for more than 15 battles.

One can dream...

So when Luto allows you to go to the next weapon upgrade, can you upgrade any of the weapon types or do you have to stay on the path of the weapon you've been leveling? For instance, when I got the first CS where luto asks about giving my npc weapons, I simply gave her another xyphos sword because I want my npc to upgrade swords. Now if luto allows me to upgrade, do you think I can only give her the next lvl of swords, or could I switch and go directly to the next lvl of G. swords? Also, if this happens to be the case, does this mean that we have to go back to the beginner lvl of weapons if later we decide to switch weapons on our npc?

From what I've seen people who got to the 2nd stage of the weapon trade... they were still able to trade multiple weapons. So I would assume you can try out something new at any time.

Another question along the same lines... if you switch weapons is anything lost? In other words, if I give mine the Uchigatana 1st, and then decide, rather than give it a lesser GK (Tachi) I want to give it a GS, will my NPC be gimped?

If I had to guess, doubt it... That seems like something that would be too hard to program to be worth it.

Runs 7 and 8.
Run 7 had 15 kills, Run 8 ended with my death.
Got her running around as Attacker with a Great Axe.
Holy ****, is all I can say.
She managed to steal hate from me. Five times.
I didn't see Double Attack kick in as much as I did with a sword, but that could be because she missed more often. Her damage output was on par with mine. For the record, I'm a 39SAM/WAR, Elvaan, using Hosodachi. STR is 47+2.
So far, her records stand at...
Sturmwind for 166
Critical hit for 123
When she did steal hate, I could get it back pretty easily.
