Don't know if there are people that actually "play" this game on these forums anymore. There are so many posters who say they don't play any longer, then why do you continue to add your "2 gil" or whatever to each and every stupid thread that is whining or complaining about something? Go do something else. What I find to be the most sad thing of all is I will look on the Main Forum and RARELY see an actual question about the game. About locations to level, items to use, quests, missions, etc. You know why? Because they get nothing but bad attention. If you ask a legitimate question about an aspect of the game, and some "veteran" of MMRPG's decides the question has been asked before and is tired of seeing it, you get some sma@rt@*** /emote like /sigh, /shrugs, or whatever instead of someone just being nice and answering the d@mn question. Get off your thrones. It's pathetic when a new person posts a simple question and the only reason most even post a reply is to poke fun at them, if there are even more than 2 or 3 replys at all. On the other hand, if the subject of the thread is something like "WHM's who suck" then by God there are gonna be 45 replys in a matter of minutes.

There, my "2 gil."

I agree, too. I'm tired of those 'It's been asked before'... and what? just don't read the post or don't answer the question! I would say that all those replies are worst spam that posts of unaware people.

However, I've no played the game :P ...at least, not YET.

Agreed. Especially questions from people that have less than 10 posts. They're new to the site and perhaps new to any kind of forum. Why not welcome them with open arms?

It'd be cool to answer their question and then give them advice on where to post and such.

Sadly, the reason why you see "same subject" posts so often is that only premium users can use the Search function in the forums.

I'm not saying that the folks at Alla don't have a right to charge for this, because maybe they do (after all, bandwith isn't exactly cheap), just that this is why it happens.

So get used to it. People ask questions, that's why there's a forum.

Here here! If you don't want to answer the question, don't respond at all! It takes the same amount of time to whine about how "dumb" a question is than it does to answer it, and at least answering doesn't waste server space, or everyone's time.

Yeah, I posted something similar the other day. Now I have have myself my very first Karma troll ~shrugs~ Maybe I should feel special and part fo the group now :P

In any rate, I agree with you entirely. Let's start actually answering questions instead of poking fun at them.

Good post Trizz. /rate up

I agree entirely. I've been lurking arround these boards for almost a year now, and look how low my post count is. It could be much higher, but I for one, don't see the point in posting posts in threads that contain "I agree with X" or "yup" or "I did that". Posts like that are just waste of space, time, and effort. If you don't have anything useful to contribute, for the love of god don't contribute at all!

i dont like the angry replies about how new people should read through all the old threads. that is not a very constructive reply.

obviously i have a search function, but even then it can be hard to find exactly the topic i want.

@trizzoro - understood. you came off too angry imho, though your avatar atm (some kind of DBZ animated gif) matches your post /smile

The only repeat posts I don't like are the ones that can be answered just by using the things available on this site.

Quest questions, stuff that's answered in some of the game guides, etc...

Don't ask without doing the research first.

Also, the ones I loathe, the questions where the answer is in the game manual.

It's a natural forum progression. A typical poster in a given allakhazam game forum has several stages of existance:

Stage 1. Newbie
At this point, most of the posts are "how do I?" or "I'm thinking of getting the game/have the game, what should I?". the older estableshed posters sometimes get annoyed at this, and tend to lash out. Usually this stage is over by 100 posts or so.

Stage 2. Newbie with brains.
At this point, the questions start getting a bit more meaningful. the poster starts understanding game mechanics enough toask questions, and see flaws with the game. Some poeople never progress beyond this stage. those posters generally disappear after about a year if they do not progress. Generally 100-500 posts

Stage 3. Occasional regular.
You are here, people know you, can pick you out from the background posts, and listen to what you have to say. At this point, the poster usually branches out into one of several seperate paths:

A. The diehard gamer -- You don't post as much, but you are still here, and when you do post, people take notice because you know the latest in game info. Forums are reserved for downtime between games and when you are looking something up on the site.

B. The disenchanted gamer -- Slowly, the game is loseing it's shine for you. you like to play games, but you don't ;like what the game has become. Slowly you start to post more and more, and play less. Your posts about the game are often somewhat bitter. because of your post count at this point, your oppinions influence the tone of the game forums more than some of the other subtypes. These usually die off at around 1200 posts, or they branch off into the asylum/oot areas. Sometimes they take a year off and then come back, temporarily refreshed. Sometimes they even turn into diehard gamers. If they sucessfully pas 1500 posts, they tend to stay around for a long time

C. the OOT/Asylum poster. Spend most of your time in the off topic forums. You still feel a kinship for your origional game forum, but you don't post there nearly as much. Oddly enough, your time in those forums makes you more able to interact with people in the game forums on a more personal level, so even if you don't play the game anymore, you can often more effectivly direct newbies to get help.

d. The missing. You leave. sometimes you post, usually you don't. 2 months from entering this stage, you are usually lost, never to be seen on the forum again.

Stage 4. Forum mainstay. 2000-5000 posts.

By this point, you aren't going anywhere for a while. you post evrywhere, interact with everyone.

Over time, everyone you started posting with will leave. You will constently be surrounded by new posters. It will be harder and harder to find a truly unique topic. By this time, forum differences and grudges have usually blunted their edges, so while there are some posters you may not like or disagree with, you rarely make an effort to get rid of them or discredit them. Why? because you know that if they leave, the forum will irrevocably change yet again, perhaps this time for the better, but usually for the worst. Change becomes both a blessing, and the enemy. At some point, you will make a choice, continue like that, or get bored and leave.

+5000 posts. Of the millions of people who fisit this board, you are one of less than 20 individuals on this board who have survived this long. It's a mind trip.

Enjoy this version of this forum while you can. Blink, and the forum will never be the same. Pretty soon you will wonder outloud "what ever happened to Dark illyana or Notcoach or any of them." and then it hits you.

sorry, i'm rambling.

Interesting thread- I think you've nailed it on the head. I'm reasonably new to this board, but not to this type of web board (admin'd a minor board, been moderator on a board almost as busy as this one).

I have to say I was shocked to realize that searching was a "premium" service. That, coupled with the fact that the main forum is very busy, is going to directly lead to a lot of repeat threads. If I can't search for the subject, I have to paw through hundreds of threads and thousands of posts (many of which feel that punctuation is optional or prefer l33t speak)- oddly enough, many people don't feel like doing this! :-P

As well, there is another type of user of these boards- the ones who lurk and listen only. I've been reading this board for weeks/months, but find it's more of a reference library than a discussion board. I have lost threads because I comment in them, and unless I write down the forum/thread I commented in, I loose them. <sigh>.

Sorry for the rant, but don't get frustrated when people can't find things because they cannot use a find function!

I get nuked every time I start a thread. I started a thread about Party Leadership and the qualities it takes to be a good leader, I started a thread asking what items people keep in their inventory all the time, and one on what's your lowest lvl job. I thought these were good topics of discussion that I had not seen in the weeks I've frequented this forum. Well my opening post gets nuked to hell everytime. I get a rate down and someone says "been there done that" "old topic" "/sigh". I'm sick of it really and don't plan on ever starting a thread again.

I am happy WarMaverick posted here, because he only proves my point. His typical threads are ones pleeing for attention (such as the "page stealing" uselessness) and have nothing at all to do with FFXI. Thank you, War.

I play! I have other online hobbies that allow me time to surf this forum, but I also still play.

That aside, the thing I've noticed lately is that there are a lot of people who take this forum just way too seriously. Yeah, it can be annoying and obnoxious, but it's not important. I understand people forming friendships and what-not over a message board, but this one in particular seems to have turned into quite the Boy's Club. There is a certain holier-than-thou quality to the posts of a few people, and it seems unwarranted. There are people who I consider to be knowledgeable and still friendly (Trickybeck the Sly is the first that comes to mind), and then there are people who seem to have access to or understanding of a lot of information but act very put-upon when they're called on to dispense it.

There's nothing saying you have to post here at all. If it bugs the snot out of you to repeat yourself for the umpteen-jillionth time, don't do it. Or do what many others have started doing: Just toss up a link to the appropriate thread with the same information therein and be done with it. The misanthrope attitude has gotten very old.
