ok guys, this is how ive seen it done, been told HOW its done, and done it myself :

1st off to be able to do a SATA + ws you need tp, so:
#1 : need a acc / atk / STR / haste set to build tp and do good dmg while doing so. typically SH, swift belt, and things like that is what you want to use in this set.

#2 : your SATA set. Needs a crap ton of +dex and +agi gear to be able to get a good boost in dmg. Emp. hairpin, Leaping boots, +dex rings, drone earrings are good for this set. Optionally you can have 2 sets, if you split up SATA, SA is based off dex and TA off agi. So, you can have an agi set for TA, and a dex set for SA if you split it up. But doing SATA together, you want to find a balance of the 2.

#3 : The only dagger's dmg that will affect your WS is your main hand. Your offhand can be a 1 dmg dagger, and the WS still do the same dmg if it was a 25 dmg dagger (given any +agi or +dex stats taken away would change the dmg). So you can use a high dmg dagger in your main hand, say a corsair's knife at lv 50 (dmg 21 and atk +10) to enhance your base dmg of the WS before SATAs dmg kicks in, and then use an off-hand that gives some good bonus stats while still doing decent dmg for TP building.

#4 : as far as ive seen INT doesnt do anything for steal, but it does help on picking locks... havent tested mugging yet. Alot of the THF AF is more situational gear that you macro in for steal, or use for farming... most of it i wouldn't use in exp parties unless you really couldn't afford anything better.

just make /equip macros to switch between your TP build set and your SATA set

but as many others said here, there are quite a few ways to play thf... find the best one for your play style

Personally, I believe the best place to get thf af information is http://www.bvvp.com/gaming/ffxi/thfaf.html
So far I only have the dagger, but from what I've read in this walkthrough, I can tell that it's very in-depth and should be looked into by any thf looking to acquire af gear.

Another thing that is really nice about this is the fact that it has Parrying Skill +10. Think about it, this is the perfect head gear to raise your parrying. If you run around with this on, along with dual wielded Parrying Knives for a couple of your farming outings, you'd be able to lvl up parrying in no time. And if I'm not mistaken, THf has a A- skill in parrying? (I could be wrong. But I DO know that NIN has an A+ in it, so it will make raising your sub easier.)

I've noticed that parrying has saved me a lot of times while casting Utsusemi. Once again, I'm not sure, but I think it goes by your AGI stat, which in THF's case is moderatley high. And over all it just seems like it would be a useful skill to have capped.

Rate up. =D You know I'm right, damnit!

Bonnet Vs. Emp
# Dec 30 2004 at 2:46 AM Rating: Excellent
My only real preference for the Bonnet comes while partying in the Boyahda Tree. At lvl 54, you can fight the Bark Spiders in there. These spiders drop spider webs, albeit rarely. However, as a thf, you can steal the webs. Again, at lvl 54, it is very hard to successfully steal from the Spiders. I would say I average about a 10%-15% success rate, which is pretty low for a Thf of my level.

However, the Bonnet dramatically improves my success rate. With webs selling for 7k a pop on my server (Leviathan) it is worth it for me to use the bonnet, and take the hit without using the EMP. Supplement it with a Life Belt, and you will still find yourself hitting mobs at a very high percentage. Eat some Mithkabobs, and make sure you have a RDM that knows the importance of throwing some good enfeeb spells out there, and you should be golden.

Just my two cents. I'm new to the site, so I hope this is beneficial to those on the fence. If you are a Thf that favors DEX stats, as I do, with the combo of Leaping Boots, DEX Knives, Rings, etc, it is very easy to end up with a +25 DEX modifier, which when you are in a Skillchain, and have a BLM casting Freeze over top of your Viper Bite... Looks pretty damn sweet.

I don't see why you'd have to use one over the other. That's what /equip macros are for. Personally, I use Life Belt while meleeing in between SATAs, then switch to a Royal Knight's Belt to SATA. Currently I am level 52, so I can't equip this yet, but I have my future macros planned out. Since I only plan on using the Rogue's Armlets and Rogue's Culotte while exp'ing, I plan on making my Steal macro go something like this:

/equip head "Rogue's Bonnet"
/equip feet "Rogue's Poulaines"
/ja "Steal" <t>
/wait 3
/equip head "Emperor Hairpin"
/equip feet "Winged Boots"

This way you don't have to lose any of the great stats, and still get the benefits of the Steal+.

Good match plan!!

Think about adding this too:
/equip Ring1 "Rogue's Ring" (Steal +3)
/equip Ring2 "Genius Ring" (INT +4)

Great difference in stealing ^^

you have to have at least a /wait 1 between the /equip and other parts of the macro.

/ja "Steal"

Hmm, I was thinking that might be the case. I was thinking that there were only 5 lines per macro, but now I remember there are six. So yeah, there would be a /wait 1 in between the equip changes and the Steal. Thanks Omega. :)

EDIT: Except that I miscounted... I already had 6 lines. x_x /sigh Looks like I'm gonna have to make 2 macros...

Ok, here's the deal...

There's been MASSIVE flamage so far on this thread, so I'm gonna try my best to clear up some of the confusion.

First off, there is no hardcore evidence or FACT that INT affects steal, but I being elvaan, have just about about the WORST luck stealing UNLESS I add INT to my stats. By adding INT, I have personally noticed a DRAMATIC improvement in my stealing ability.

Second, STR vs. DEX & AGI for a THF seems to be the big question (i.e. Hairpin vs. Bonnett). All I can say to people that say STR means NOTHING in Party is that you obviously don't pay much attention to your TP meters while you're battling, probably because you're too busy watching your SA/TA timers. FACT: If you miss an attack OR land a successful attack for 0 damage -- TP Gain = 0. If you're hitting for 0s, the greatest SA/TA in the world won't help the fact that it takes you 10 minutes to build TP. BUT in some cases, stacking DEX & accuracy CAN lead to enough critical hits to totally negate this AND build up a higher SA/TA in the process.

So, with this stuff being said, there really is a VERY simple "gear selection" process for your thief, as every race has their own weaknesses when it comes to THF.

1. Watch your attack success rate. If you whiff at mobs for most of the battle...get a life belt as opposed to say a RK Belt that adds +2STR +2DEX +2AGI.
2. Watch your TP meter. If you're hitting for 0s & 1s, and TP is not building...you "NEED" more STR or a higher DMG dagger.
3. If you're hitting for 20+ every shot consistently on IT mobs but your SATA isn't exactly wowing any crowds...you might want to think about trading some STR for DEX & AGI.
4. Evaluate the mobs you're fighting at your level. If you're primarily fighting high defense mobs, like crabs, you will most likely need STR. If you're fighting LOW defense mobs that are weak to distortion (SA/TA/VB) like bats or flies, stacked DEX & AGI can work WONDERS.

Most of the posts on this thread seem to be pre-level 60 THF's. You will see once you start getting past level 60 that mobs start getting REDICULOUSLY high defense and HP. Your weapon skills that COULD be doing 1500+ damage (shark bite + light effect) will gimp out and barely do 300pts damage if you don't have your stats properly balanced.

Every side to these arguments holds truth. You just have to see all sides and see how they apply to your specific character's race. I hope I have helped some of you understand the cloudy fog of FFXI THF stat balancing. Good luck and happy hunting!

So many rumors about Thiefs...had anyone noticed that our JA's are about the most vague out there? Just an aside...

Ok, to topic. I'd agree with XHighlander on a few points. No matter what anyone else says or posts, it's up to YOU to find out what works for your race/job. My suggestion is to buy different armor (no whining about the cost, you're a THF for goodness sake!). Try it out, see what works. I've had people tell me all sorts of crap and, in the end, what works in battle is what's right. I'm an Elvaan thf so I obviously have some DEX problems and I have STR already because of my race. Since I'm not on the game right now, I can't say what my stats are but, as I recall, they're pretty balanced atm. I have little strength gear and ALOT of DEX and AGI gear. Since I have inherant strength with my race and Meat enhances that (as well as my attack), I focus on DEX and AGI and it works WELL. This will not be the case for every thf though. Mithra will obviously have more DEX and less STR, tarus (Umm...) less of both - lol.

All I'm saying is: think a little people! I see people walking around with the dumbest armor because someone told them it was the best. Find out what works for your job/race. Don't be afraid to pick up a new ring/sword/dagger/boots/etc and try them out. If they don't work, sell them back. It's the best way to find the best gear for you're job/race.

As another aside...I disagree with Xhigh in this: there is no contest between the Bonnet and the Emp.Pin in a party. The Bonnet has no STR abilities and I don't think anyone is claiming that INT helps your SATA - lol. There are probably other headpieces that will buff your STR if that's what you want but imo, the Pin is the best for head. If you want to buff STR, go with a ring. The pin has both DEX AND AGI. Can't beat that anyway you try. On the other hand, there is much to be said for a quick /equip when you're ready to steal, this hat helps.

The moral of this whole thread: Try it out! If it doesn't work, sell it back! You can't go wrong trying the ideas...it makes the game more interesting and fun.

Isn't that the point?
The use of INT.

Ok...from what I have discovered. INT has a few different uses. INT does not help with steal at all, but it does affect MUG (gil amount), and your ability to pick a lock without springing a trap or mimic.

Here's the kicker....

INT also affects your defense against Status Effects

Very good for thieves when fighting mobs that use status effect attacks.

ex. picking a coffer (poof) you get a trap (weakened, poison, etc)....it helps to buffer you against that. This has been my experiments with it.

I have been told by a few people that INT also helps certain Dagger WSs (I was specifically told Gust Slash)... Tho I don't really know what a THF at the level to wear this hat would care about Gust Slash, but maybe this includes Cyclone?

Take it at face value, I've had 2 level 60+ THFs tell me this, one them is a Japanese player that's been around the block a few times. I don't personally seek equips to boost my INT, but I ain't gunna complain if I get a lil extra.

I agree with the post below that INT doesn't affect stealing chances. This hat is also better for farming purposes than for stats and straight out fighting. I think INT increases your chance of successfully picking locks and not getting whacked by traps.
It almost sounds that lockpicking is based off DEX and INT. You need to be dextrous to pick the lock but intellegent enough to know how to use the tools, how to disarm traps, and pick the lock in the end.

Well you gotta keep in mine two things with the hairpin. one ther hairpin is really over rated with the thf class, and two it doesnt raise any str so your SATA wont be any different. as level 50 thf i hit 9 times outta 10 and now that i have double attack and will soon be getting triple attack there witll be very little delay between hits. im not saying its a hundred fists or anything of course but when you have haste, double attack, triple attack, and hit so often dex isnt as much of a factor as raiseing str is. also agi and evasion isnt too imporant when you have high evasion skill, 3 evasion + bonues and you dont tank. i also have been getting into stealing a lot more on the account that i can steal more valuable items and can pull in 15+k gil just from leveling. but what you raise in skill is up to you but i personally think that the +steal in all the AF is accually useful cause i like the gil and gold beastcoins i belive are up to 72k a stack on my server. /grin.

hairpin is not over rated for thfs. imo, thfs get the most use out of it. Thfs should not worry about str. THf shoud focus on getting as much dex and agi as possible. I dont know who told u that dex and agi wont affect ur sata, but SA is based on dex, and Trick attack is based on agi. im not sure how much of a role str plays, but im a mithra with high dex and i can outdamage an elvaan thf with high str anyday with sata viperbite. also about evasion bonuses, they are important for pulling and for soloing, i use battle gloves, hairpin, and nomands mantle, and noticable difference in the amount that i dodge when i am solo.

STR is very important to a thf.....this is why a thf who does not use food, is a thf that will never be invited to my party. STR increases dmg, as does a higher attack rating. A thf's dmg will nearly double when eating meat mithkabobs, especially when doing SATA with WS. DEX, AGI, STR......go for the highest scores you can in these categories

so remember to bring your meat kabobs
and it wont nearly double but it will like.. triple normal attacks on mobs with high def

Did you just say a THF's damage will DOUBLE when eating mithkabobs? That is so entirely untrue. Unless, of course, you're talking about normal hit damage with a dagger ... but that is not what the conversation is about. Normal hitting with a dagger is useless to a Thief except for gaining TP ... whether it does 1 damage or 9 damage, nobody cares, because that's not where it's at for Thieves. Thieves primarily care about one thing, and that's SA+TA. Actually, make that 2 things, SA+TA and SA+TA+VB. The damage equation is severely altered by Dex and Agi. I have +15 to Dex and +17 to Agi at level 40. Just yesterday, for curiosity's sake, a level 41 War/Thf and I were grouped and we had a mini contest. Who could do the most damage with just a plain SA attack. He was one level higher, and obviously was stacked in his base strength, some items, and mithkabobs. My only strength items came from mithkabob and +1 str from my merc. capt. belt. Lemmie tell ya, I trounced the guy. All I had was an Archer's Dagger (13 damage) and he had a Royal Swordsman's Blade (57 damage). I owned him on Sneak Attack Damage. I layed into a Soldier Crawler for 186 damage, and all he managed was 113 damage. So ... his damage of weapon + strength, and my low damage of weapon, low strength, mega dex and agi = victory. End of story. Get your story straight before you go telling people strength is so important and that, essentially, a +1 STR ring is better than Leeping Boots. You're also saying, essentially, that Elvaan make uber theives and that Mithra suck at being a thieves. You're a tool.
RE: Better gear for head
# Apr 18 2005 at 9:58 PM Rating: Decent
There may not be much of a difference between 1 Damage a hit, and 9 Damage, but there is a HUGE difference between 0 Damage a hit and 5. STR may not be the biggest idea on the mind of the typical Thief, but I try to carry around both Strength bonus equipment, as well as Agility and Dexterity enhancing gear. If i use my AGI and DEX gear on, say, Robber Crabs in Kuftal Tunnel, i may hit 8/9 hits, but they will most likely be straight 0's. Trading in such gear for attack and Strength bonuses, I hit maybe 3/4 times, but at least i begin hitting for 3 to 7 Damage a hit, which gives me a TP gain. Without using Strength up gear in that situation, i'm nearly useless to my party, and 0's just plain look bad. Try not to flame somebody else for their opinions, unless you have tried them yourself, with staggering results.

What no one is saying here is that STR is really important for your solo performance as a THF. You can't rely on SATA for farming! You can get a Sneak Atack but you will need your regular attack to kill the mob. If your AGI/DEX is all buffed up and you got no STR you won't kill very fast. The best idea is to buff it all, keep your DEX, AGI and STR well balanced and you will do well at all aspects. Or if you've got the cash, get one AGI/DEX based armor for party and get a STR buffed one for farming. I'm saving my gil for that shiny Brigandine +1 so for now I got a "one armor fits all" type thing. I'm Mithra so already have high DEX/AGI. I have the hairpin and some other buffs but wear puissance rings and Gigas Bracelets. My SATA is still one of the highest around and I usually do double the damage on regular attacks because I have STR+ 16, eating a kabob gives me STR+ 21. That leaves my STR/AGI/DEX pretty well balanced and so is my performance.
I've seen a hume THF do a SATA for about 50 dmg more than me, he had like DEX +23 or something. But hey, his regular attack was for 15 and mine was for 27... Hmmm... 50dmg more once a minute versus 13dmg more every hit... :P

My STR/DEX/AGI stats as lvl 45 THF/NIN:

STR 40+16
DEX 60+7
AGI 52+11

im glad u guys are not on my server.... i would never invite a thf that prefers str over dex and agi. dex and agi are the most important factors that go into the calculation of SATA damage. the emp pin gives +3 to dex AND agi.... which would boost your SATA damage by ALOT. stop playing FFXI (the greatest MMO ever), we dont need any more noobs than we already have in the game.

I will say again, that dex and agi are much more imporant than str for a thf. The reason that thfs use mithkabobs is like 90% for the ATTACK boost that mithkabobs give u. they give u alitte str, but trust me, the couple str that mithkabobs give u isnt nearly as useful as the 20% (not sure, but somethin around there) attack that they give u. Thats why thfs use dex rings rather than str rings.

ok so ive been testing this whole dex and agi and sata dmg thing....found out that attack and your weapons dmg are the only things that accually effect your SATA dmg to a noticable degreei can out dmg a thf/nin my level with the games best dex and agi gears you can get at 54 and im useing attack and str gears as a thf/war...when i use berserk my dmg owns his...also im not a noob cause i think this cause i accually went out and tested it over and over useing all the diff gears crappy and good and also tested its with a handful of other thfs from level 54-72 and we all found out that it IS accually attack and MOST importantly you weapons base dmg that effects it...i have also found that everyone calling me a noob for saying this has had boots and pin and what not for thier whole thf career and never even notice they could do the same dmg with it off lol, i honestly think you should put all your gil into buying the best weapon you can THEN get all the dex/agi gear you want if you wanna spend the gil cause of the acc and evasion. but so yeah belive what you want im just saying ive been testing this whole thing out and from what ive seen dex and agi dont do crap compared to what some other things can do.

K, first off, punctuation and paragraphs are your friends. You sound like an idiot with one incredibly long rambling sentance.

But on to the topic at hand...

Of course you're gonna own his damage when you use berserk. It says right in the ability description that it raises your attack. I use a scythe with my warrior, and I can tell you, my dmg against an IT high def increases from ~25 to ~30 - 35 average. Stop and think a bit before using contradictory facts to prove your point.

then i used hide, put all my +dex gear on and sa'd the same gob. This time, i hit for 170. i was using no weapons at any time, just fists, so the +22 i equiped, boosted my sneak attack almost 100 dmg. my attack was the same the entire time, so dont try saying that dex dosent afect sata.

Take a gander at this site:
DATA on THF for THF by THF

I'll boil it down for you. Basically... both sides of the argument are correct. To really boil it down to my point here, according to this site, your DEX and AGI add to your SATA damage, but are then multiplied by your attack over the enemies defense. Which means without good attack, getting tons of DEX and AGI won't help much, just the same as getting tons of attack won't help much without good DEX and AGI.

I'd also like to point out that according to that site, your weapon's damage is important to your SATA damage in that it acts as a cap to the amount of damage you can do. So, the higher your base weapon damage, the more you will be able to bring out those nice juicy numbers.

The only problem is that site dosen't show how weapon skills fit into the SATA damage picture, although I think they are heavily dependant on STR and Weapon Damage for the non-elemental ones, although I don't have any solid testing to back that up. So, you can take that how you want.

INT doesn't matter to a WHM anyway; INT is for BLACK magic. MND is for White Magic. :P

I've never seen int effect my ability to steal, not one bit. DEX, in my researches, effects ability to steal. This I have tested, and noticed a difference with. The stats on AF seem to be more focused on rounding out your abilities, thus the INT. Thieves don't need it, but it helps with magic related defenses, and lockpicking and the likes.
