Great news for DOFUS fans around the world, as Square Enix has entered into a publishing deal with Ankama to bring their mega-popular cartoon-style MMORPG, Wakfu, to North America! For those of you who don't know, DOFUS and, by extension, Wakfu, are two turn-based MMORPGs where players must move tactically around the battlefield, similar to a Final Fantasy Tactics style of play. Wakfu, the sequel to DOFUS that takes place 1000 years in the future, will also feature the unique characteristic where players will be able to have an impact on their game's evolving ecosystem. If, for example, you were to kill all the bunnies in the game, repeatedly, you might actually make that species disappear!

While no date has been set for the North American launch of Wakfu, with Square Enix backing this popular French MMO developer, we should expect to hear more in the near future.

The future of MMORPGs is, and always has been, in the hands of the players. Recognizing this, French game developer Ankama Games is developing a sequel to their highly popular Dofus (pronounced doe-fuss) game. The game, Wakfu, is set in the DOFUS world 1000 years in the future. The world has changed visually and much of the landscape is now underwater, though players of the Dofus game will find much familiar inside the world.

Sérgio dos Santos, International Marketing Assistant for Ankama Games, sat down with me recently and I have to admit, I find myself looking forward to Wakfu more now than ever!! Ankama Games has succeeded in a wonderful way with Dofus, providing a mostly pay to play game with a lower subscription cost ($65 a year which include special gifts) drawing millions of players into their world. Their studio is often overlooked, however, when discussing long lasting and well made games, to the great detriment of the MMO industry. With both games, it would be a true tragedy to ignore the story and fun that are available at a cost that is both reasonable and affordable compared to most other subscription MMOs.

Beta testing has begun for Wakfu, sequel to DOFUS.

Ankama is proud to announce the launch of the closed Beta version of Wakfu, its next tactical MMORPG. Scheduled for a Q4 release, the Java sequel to DOFUS is now entering its final development stage.

Improving the turn-based fighting system of DOFUS even further, Wakfu sets a new standard in massively multiplayer online games with its combination of battle tactics and role playing.

Upcoming MMO Wakfu is being developed by Ankama Studios, who also developed and published popular MMO DOFUS. They've released several new screen shots, and we have them here for you!

What is Wakfu? In Wakfu, players will start a fantastic and epic adventure. Together with their magic powers, they either fight against the fauna and flora of the World, or tame them to become breeders or farmers. Thanks to an icon-driven and intuitive language, players can interact to create alliances or confront each other in heroic fights. Each of these actions will directly and considerably influence the economy and the rules that govern the World.
