I've felt that the overall player average on my peak playing time has decreased by three-hundred some-odd people, but that's only from the occassional /search all. I don't think the game is dying, I think those hardcore players are the ones sticking around. Not entirely, though, since I've noticed people drifting between say, WoW and FFXI. It's just begining to trim and define its long-term member base, so to speak.

If the hardcore player-base isn't fairly large, I think that's when the game is going to die. Which is why I'm sort of confused as to why SE is trying to promote people who've left in to coming back. If they've left once, chances are things haven't changed, and they'll have a reason to leave again. Like a lot of people have said -- this game requires a LOT of people to make it work. :)

You Have a good point Ferra.

Once thing that I find really stupid about this welcome home thing they keep doing is that there is no real incentive.

Aside from some new armors and lands from the COP era, FFXI has not evolved all that much. If you want people to come back, give them a reason to...call it bribes or whatever, but its good business. I think FFXI needs:

New Jobs: Everyone clamors for it yet SE does nothing.

Adjust current jobs: Give each job a distinct ability that makes it invaluble. So when I am seeking with my Drk I dont get ousted by a Ranger seeking. Make it so that no matter what all jobs from White Mage to Dragoon will be in demand.

Cap the Auction House, limit how much gil can be passed thru the mog system in a 24hr period, and cap the bazaars. Sounds communistic dont it? Well obviously the people of Vana'Diel arent responsible enough with their damn items to keep everything affordable. YES its human nature to always want more, but this is ridiculous. Half the people I know who quit FFXI did so cause the prices are insane.

Well those are my thoughts.

I think this whole thread is BS to be honest... When I started a year ago there where about 2300-2600. Today, we have anywhere from 3000-3500. I haven't seen any real big change.

Applying for World Emigration (Jun. 7)

The character population has increased significantly for many Worlds and shows no sign of slowing down. To help balance the overall distribution of adventurers, we have decided to invite players from select Worlds to emigrate to less heavily populated servers.

When i start to play 2 years ago right after NA release it was about 5000-6000 players with not much lag. What's your point? The laging and disconnecting crap now SE giving us has got me thinking if they have degraded their server for FFXI. Back then i won't even have a disconnect for no reason for months. Not to blame them or anything, but since they release couple new MMORPGs such as FrontMission online in JP and some others, it seems logic to me. You know buisness is still buisness. They need to think every possible way to make more profit. Such as lowering cost to maintain server, just like companies sometimes fire some of their employeers.

If you are the one who writes about this news in POL. You got to give a reason for players understands why you perform the Emigration. And EVEN IF it is true the real reason behide it is they want to balance the server so it's easier for them run the game on a degraded server. You won't just go ahead and say the reason is "The character pupulation has DECREASED". Unleast the news writer wants to lose his job on the very next day. And NO, you can't just say SE want to perform a Emigration without any given reason. So what will you write if YOU are responsible to write this news?? Huh?

Go ahead and ask around those who have played FFXI since NA release. Ask them how much players usually online back then. It was once break through 1 million pupulations and POL has it on front page one year ago. But i have never heard them claim they have reach 1.1 million pupulations since then.

In reference to the emigration, they havent opened any new servers in forever either. Just move people around.

Also go ahead and think about how many players you once know ever since you are lvl 1 and still playing. Myself atleast over 70% of them i once know has quit the game. And i fairly sure they didn't just disapear into the thin air.

If i ever do quit and give out stuffs. I sure will only give to some random newbies who has no subjob. So easier for them survive. Not to some lvl 62 sam/war.
