I'm going to have to disagree with you. That was very eloquent. Reading it made me feel a little emo even. (in a good way because I agree with you )

Small derail...

I'm sitting here reading this thread when I hear my daughter exclaim excitedly behind me, "Mommy, look!! Barney is on your computer!! Can I sit on your lap so that I can see Barney?!"

Thank god she can't read yet.

Smiley: laugh

Let me know when she is learning to read..and I'll take it down if it is still up...

Alrighty.

I don't even play MMO's and was never concerned in the first place. Premium was never taken off auto-renew.

My reasons for canceling premium still exist. I never canceled just because of IGE and the RMT connections, I canceled mainly because I felt that Alla no longer needed my financial backing.

When I first got here, the site was never the greatest in terms of features/appearance/etc.. but I liked it because of the community. Because of the community (good and bad posters alike) and the feel of the site I felt it was like an old garage magazine, it had a grassroots feel.

I could picture Alla in his home office checking code and updating things with a "team" of unpaid or barely paid admins around the country helping him out with keeping the site going. I felt that it was a site created/maintained by people that love/play the MMO genre. It wasn't some corporate entity sending money to keep the site floating.

So I happily paid my money thinking I was helping some guy and his friends maintain a fun site run by people that love the genre and for people that love the genre.

Then Alla got corporate support. I felt my money was no longer needed or wanted.

Instead of helping support and maintain the site, my money was going to some corporate fatcats pockets and instead of seeming to be a "thank you for your support" the premium features now seemed to be "pay and be cool" thing (kind of like how Hellgate's "elite" pay feature is being viewed).

I never really cared about any of the premium features beyond the journal. Avatar and smilies were nice but I've been doing just fine without them. So the features weren't an incentive for me to get premium, I viewed them as a "thank you" for my support.

I don't know who owns the other sites, don't really care. Those sites don't have the same "grassroots" feel that Alla has. Maybe it's because they are slicker looking, and seem to have better features/abilities/etc..

Alla has never been a flashy site. And to me that had been part of the grassroots feel. Any site with corporate or money backing would look alot better. I guess I expect more from a site backed by big money.

This is still the case. Almost everyone I know who has asked me what I do for a living beyond "computer programmer" still doesn't really get it. The only friends who do are the ones who play MMOs. If it's difficult for me to explain to people what I do and what the site is about, can you imagine how useless it would be for someone who doesn't play/love the games to actually work on the sites?

Missing the point. I know the people that work on the site are gamers/MMOers. The point is that prior to the buy-out it had the feel that these people were doing it with their own blood, sweat & tears.

Now, it's people that love games being paid to maintain a site.

Big difference.

What you don't get Seo is we got paid before the buyout. The buyout is allowing us to cover more games, get more servers and and fix up the broken crap that has been around forever.

And just for your information, when we lose premium members and the cash starts to decline, what do you think will happen to me, or Pikko, or? If the site doesn't make money, I WON'T have a job. You think ad revenue makes the world go around? It's a bit like car salesmen, you have to work for get your money, you don't make sales, you don't have a job, period.

I still love my job, and that is one reason why I still have it. It's not unusual for me to work 18 hours a day. If that's not blood sweat and tears buddy, I am a guy! I sure the hell don't get paid for that 18 hours, I don't get vacation pay so I work even at Christmas, I don't get insurance 401k, nothing. Gaming that's my job, I love my job, whether it was Alla's pocket or whomever... I still get paid to do what I love to do. And they really haven't changed a thing on how we run the site, except help us out some. It's not a corporate take over.

If we didn't have that sponsorship (read: sponsor, not take over) right now, we'd be hurting. You may not remember what it was like running on broken servers, downtime all the time, all the programmers had RL jobs and this was just an aside and barely had time to keep us up and running. Stuff was broken all over the place. You just don't see our side of it, you just see yours. Which is fine, I don't feel like explaining it any more.

BTW I STILL love my job.

I don't see why not! Althought some of the known issues might have changed by now. I'll bug Alla to say yes, but I liked those a lot.
