Its taken me a while to realize this, if I'm even right. Are elite monsters somehow programmed to ignore pets an go straight for your toon? Even when I use something like intimidate with a good defensive tank pet like a spider or turtle, the monsters seem to make one brief pass at the pet and immediately come after me. As long as there's room to maneuver, I can kite them or briefly feign death to break them off, but I've gotten to the point where I deliberately sweep the area of lesser mobs before provoking the big guy.

Try giving your pet a little time to get some threat on the mob first before attacking yourself. As you get higher level it's really easy to pull aggro from a pet if you start attacking right away. (normal mobs generally die too fast for this to be an issue)

As Karlina said, wait a bit. If you send your pet in but start attacking before your pet has a chance to get aggro then you're going to have the majority of it. Intimidation will work for the 3 sec. stun but if you have already generated too much aggro then your pet won't overcome that.

Also, make sure that Growl hasn't switched itself off and/or Cower switched itself on (I know that in the past this could happen for abilities not on your pet's Action Bar).

For elites, it also makes sense to misdirect to the pet (at level 76 you can glyph it so that you can basically perma-misdirect where your pet is involved) and use the first couple GCDs after it goes down to put up your DoTs.

Feign is on a 30-second cooldown for a reason - it's supposed to be used often, and there's no shame in it. It's another tool in the box.

Did they change Growl to a taunt recently? Could have sworn I lost aggro to a Hunter's pet on a mob I'd just taunted.

No growl is still just a noraml aggro building skill. Some pets (tenacity I think) have a talent for an actual taunt.

Probably had the ability activated then. I taunted the mob, got in a Mangle crit (25k+) and the mob immediately turned around and started attacking the pet. A 25k Mangle crit gives me something like 70k threat or so.

If you want your pet to have the aggro, you could start off your attack with a macro. I used:

/target Pet
/cast Misdirection
/targetlasttarget
/startattack

Here's another macro I always use, it doesnt include Misdirect, although that could be added. I cast that manually if i think there's a need.

It sends your pet in to attack, and casts Hunters mark. Just let pet get a few hits in before you open fire and all should be well.

#showtooltip Hunter's Mark
/petattack
/cast Hunter's Mark

Over the years of solo'ing various content, I learned several things. Don't forget that healing, as well as DPS, causes aggro. So, depending on the level of the elite, you may want to not only have misdirected a good Chimera Shot (MM), Explosive Shot (Surv.) or Arcane Shot (BM)... but also to hold off on additional threat such as Mend Pet until your Tenacity pet has gained a good handle on aggro. The other good thing to remember is that if you want to solo the typically hunter-soloable content... always bring along a good Glyph of Misdirection... that way a good 60%+ of your attacks don't have to throw too much threat your way.

Hope that helps :)

I've still got two hunters 'growing' (both about L65) but I made the mistake of setting up a rogue and a mage on the same servers primarily to serve as auction agents. But at the present the 'agents', both mid 40's, are more fun.

Maybe others don't think so, but if a hunter stays geared up (including AH purchases of weaponry to stay ahead of the level drops), he and his pet are a pretty unstoppable force.
