Kinda OT: Diablo3 AH Going Down QuestionsFollow

Forgive me for the OT post (not like we're ever swamped in topics where an OT thread is really going to push relevant stuff off the front page, lol), but...

I keep reading about how the Diablo 3 AH is going down on March 18th.

That leads me to ask... did they actually make gearing up sensible in that game on your own? I remember when I played several months ago, and the chances of you finding anything decent was slim-to-none. For example, my Barbarian went from Act 1 clear to nearly the end of Act 3 before I finally found a usable weapon......that was 10 levels out of date. If it hadn't been for one I bought on the Gold Auction House, I would have been trying to use the same stupid weapon for more than 10 character levels.

Did they/are they going to do anything to improve this? Because otherwise we'll be right back to Diablo2 where everybody traded Stones of Jordan for all of the decent items and without Multiplayer, you had no chances at all of getting anything good unless you played a modded version of the game (which is impossible with D3).

I don't want to go back to an era where I have to trade gems, stones of jordan or what-not to get equipment in public matches.

The PC version has an entirely new loot system.

Ahh. okay, I'll check that video as soon as the updater is done downloading. I thought I remembered SOMETHING about a Loot System but haven't found the info yet.

Hopefully said system actually works as advertised, lol.

EDIT: Just watched and dayum.

I'm going to have to try that stuff now. Thanks for linking that!

I started playing again shortly after the big pre-RoS patch hit and the game is vastly improved. The drops you get are way more useful than before, as are the crafted items. Paragon levels are now accountwide (only split between Softcore and Hardcore, like the shared stash and the crafter levels). They improved many spells and nerfed the most obvious OP ones, so without any in-depth knowledge it feels to me as if gameplay is more varied.

Monster power is gone, same as the required play through 3 difficulty settings before you can enter the endgame. The newly introduced difficulty system allows you to adjust between "Normal" or "Torment" (for example) between two quests. I think you have to leave the game for that and then restart it but its still way better than playing through Normal, then Nightmare, then Hell and then finally arriving in Inferno.

Since I play Hardcore exclusively and therefore progress slower than I would in Softcore (and since WoW is still taking up much of my gaming time) I have not progressed far in the endgame. My monk is able to play comfortable on Expert (the third of the 5 main difficulty settings, with Torment being able to be cranked up further still). I'd say that is the equivalent of maybe Monsterpower 2 or 3 before the patch.

Now I'm alternating between leveling other classes and gaining Paragon levels. Since those stay even if your character dies and since you have access to them on every new level 1 character they are really softening the blow if one of your characters gets killed.

So I just tried some now that it finally got done downloading and I'd have to say I'm impressed by what I've seen thusfar.

I did the first quest in Normal with a brand new Barbarian. I was nearly falling asleep the mobs were so easy, so I ramped the challenge up to Hard and now they are actually mildly challenging.

So far, every single blue drop has been useful for my barbarian which is surprising to say the least. Also took a look at the crafting list and was surprised (pleasantly so) to see a much better assortment of stuff craftable for a better level range, and even better is the fact that Most items are Rares (with a few low-levelblues thrown in).

Also I love the changes to crafting materials, things seem much more reasonable to craft (rather than having to go from 10 of this item to 1 of the next item, but then I need 10 of those for the next thing, etc.

Also, combining potions all into 1 kind. awesome.

Another update: Damn did they make the game awesome or what?

I just got past Leoric's Manor, and my character is in full yellows almost (except for rings/neck) along with Orange (In Act1!) bracers and I get an upgrade every 5-10min, and every couple levels something new is available from my Blacksmith. My character's power is just ridiculous (my Lv28 Barb is now stronger than my old Lv42 one was) and with me having the game on Hard, well... I'm almost Level 30 and I haven't even finished Act1 yet.

I realize that this is partly because of the +50% XP, but yeesh. That and I found several Pools of Reflection that I used to get large amounts of XP very quickly.

All-in-all, the game is very nice now. I'll definitely be playing more of this, might even buy the expansion. I wasn't all that interested in it originally, but the new game mode sounds like it could be fun rather than trudging through the same quests over and over again. Now that my Barb is actually decently geared (for her level) with actual good stats on her gear, I'm actually getting a good experience as to what a Barb *should* play like, and damn it is simply awesome.

I'd have to agree. Played my 60 monk this weekend after not looking at the game for a year it was different than how I remember. I ramped up the difficulty to "Torment" 10, but gradually scaled that back down as I was getting my *** handed to me by larger packs because of the old gear I was using. But on Torment 1, I quickly regeared in all new yellow stuff with a few legendaries, all on Act 1. Then went off and beat down Diablo at the same setting.
What got me hooked for the weekend was some recipe drops, the keys of terror?, that I had never seen before.

I am curious as to how people are going to make the millions of gold required to buy some of the legendary vendor recipes with the AH going though.

If you concentrate on making gold it should be manageable. Even when I'm crafting a lot I make a decent plus most of the time.

Easy.

Quest Grinding.

I started with 240,000g.

Even after doing some crafting, and making a couple Flawless Square Gems (at 5k a pop), I now have 280,000g and I just got past Leoric's Manor (last thing I did was arrive at the Halls of ... Anguish? Floor 2 Waypoint). With 3 Acts (and lots more levelups) to go, I'm quite sure I'll rack up quite a sum of gold by then.

And I'm only Lv28. Quests are commonly giving 4-5k gold and I imagine I'll get more as I go up in levels. Also, due to me being on Hard mode, I get +75% Gold from drops, and it isn't too uncommon to see 300g+ from smashing a stump open or some-such. It tends to rack up fairly quickly

Started with the 5th act yesterday. My Monk is now 68 and has bested Malthael. I must say this new act is pretty neat. The areas and most of the new enemies have a great design and the atmosphere is awesome. I only played around a bit with the new Bounty system but so far it is fun.

Haven't tried Rifts yet, but have enough Fragments to open 2 or 3 so I will pretty soon.

What are your impressions so far?

Not played in...a while (year?)..I beat the game, did some online playing but in the end went back to WoW (I got D3 as part of the Pay for WoW for a year deal). I started Act V last night, but only got to play for about 40min. Story seems neat, so I'll try to give it more time tonight and see how far I can get.
