No where in this post is it declared as official, people make assumptions all the time. He did say it was from a friend, blah blah blah, how rarely do we believe the from a friend BS? If I said "my friend had relations with a murloc last year and she got pregnant, what should she do?" You would automatically assume it was me I was discussing, no?

I am still in the belief that I don't listen until Blizzard says it, the same way I didn't believe all the crap flying around about Michael Jackson, or the new releases of SC, D or Cataclysm, until it was confirmed. People speculate and dream all the time, there is no reason to hate Reinjin who has done a lot for this community. You have your opinions as well as he does, and mine may differ still. If we all thought the same, we'd be quite boring and have no need for discussion forums, right?

It is your decision to hate him, regardless of any actions I may or may not take against him for this thread. I see no reason to smack him for this post, alter his karma, mute or ban him, or treat him any differently than I have in the past. We have had MANY joke, funny, assumption, creative, made up, off the wall, troll, etc types of posts in here from many different people. It gives us something to chat about, discuss, defend and enjoy, or not, but you'd be mighty bored if every post was about how fantastic (or sick) bodhi is, how bad FFXI or Blizzard sucks, or how hot I am. You'd get bored in a hurry and probably never come back.

Hello, Mistress.

If enough people are genuinely upset over my bit of fiction, I'm willing to accept any and all consequences.

By the way, I could never get bored of discussing how hot you are.

You took advantage of people for your own amusement. The substance of the discussion was a sideshow for you - I don't see any posts from you anywhere in that discussion.

You don't think the people who defended your list feel used? You could have engendered the same discussion by being honest and posting the list as your own from the beginning. Lore threads are always lengthy and intense.

Maybe it's just me. Maybe honesty and integrity really don't mean anything anymore. I mean, it's just a dumb game board full of people discussing a dopey game, right?
Stop being a whiny ***** and accept that Reinjin pulled one awesome prank on all of us.
I know I fell for it and I'm usually pretty skeptic about things.
I also know that this is one of the better laughs I've had in a while.

Props and rate ups to him.
Also for predicting Cataclysm as the next expansion.

And Word, you better make this an achievement. It's worth it. Smiley: grin

I’m reminded of the work of Joey Skaggs, the famous hoaxer who makes an artistic career out of exposing the gullibility of various media channels. He shows the public how easily they can be lied to, and how few the safeguards have become now that journalism is subordinated to ratings.

Not that I think Reinjin has Skagg’s motives. He just got a kick out of watching people swallow a lie, as shown by his bragging about it after he was exposed. There’s trolls like him all over, and very few safeguards to keep the signal-to-noise ratio at a reasonable level, especially when people think there’s entertainment value in the trolling.

Compare this to, say, Blizzard’s hilarious April Fools’ hoaxes. Now those are entertaining, because there’s more to them than just telling people something that isn’t true. Telling someone to meet you at Appleby’s, then not showing up is a hoax, but not particularly funny. Telling someone to meet you at Appleby’s, and having them met at the door by a ********** drag queen, is a potentially hilarious prank. See how that works?

I'm sorry Reinjen, but I remember looking at the list during the middle of BC and saying "NO way would Lich King be next, I'm quite sure that Emerald Dream would be next."
I even had a post or two in the original thread.

It's completely possible I'm going mad, but I'd rather believe that this is a second post with the same list.

I fell for it as well. While I'm not laughing... I do want to tip my hat to the OP for coming up with something unique and pulling it off with a certain degree of class. Rate up.

This little stunt reminds me of the hoopla surrounding the "Blair Witch Project". LOTS of ppl fell for that too and thought it was real. Some may not like it and may be pissed and others will find it humorous. I will wait to hear from DF before anything is done or not.

re Aethien and an achievement - yeah, I think I will actually.

edit - Love it or hate it, it does deserve the following achievement: http://wow.allakhazam.com/wiki/Reinjinpwnt!

I wouldn't go as far as saying it's a 'dumb game board full of people discussing a dopey game'.

Maybe you missed my sarcasm there. And I'm not offended, I wasn't at all involved in the thread because I happen to be one of those people who didn't know who Deathwing was until the publicity surrounding Blizzcon. I just think after re-reading the thread that you took a lot of people in and that was unnecessary. I know I would feel like a dupe if it were me and I don't see how the deception benefited your stated purpose of getting a discussion going about the lore of WoW.

So, yes, I do have rather high moral standards I suppose. What I find most troubling is that holding honesty and integrity out as a standard is considered "high moral standards" as opposed to being the norm for moral standards.

I also think you detracted from your own "accomplishment", so to speak. You made some rather interesting and thought-provoking predictions but all anyone will remember is how you hoodwinked a bunch of people who take the lore pretty seriously. I will acknowledge that you offered an apology, but even there you condition it by saying there is only an "extreme possibility" that an apology is warranted.

In the end, even if no one else feels as I do, I felt it was important to not let your fraud pass without comment.

Please, DF, hate? I must be awfully dense then because my post was not intended to come anywhere near hate. For the record, I do not hate the OP for his deception - his post didn't mean all that much to me because I have very little knowledge of WoW lore and only got into the game in early '07. And as I said in a previous post, as far as getting discussion going, he could have done that easily without the lie.

I guess I have this problem with jumping in where I'm not involved, and I probably should have just let this go it seems. After all, no one who posted in the thread has objected. I think it was his gloating that bothered me most.

But I'm really bothered by the hate comment. Is my post really that full of emotion? Am I that out of touch with what I write?

Really?

His hoax was basically, “Uh...I heard that the next Batman movie...will have Piper Perabo in it. As Catwoman. I know because I found a letter in Christopher Nolan’s trash.”

An educated guess backed up by a lie about its source. How is this funny? People on teh internets discussed it as if it might be true. How is this amazingly cool?

For comparison, google Joey Skaggs, or Alan Abel, or MIT/CALTECH pranks. Or hell, visit a college dorm sometime. Hoaxes can be funny. They can make you rethink your perceptions, even your values. People must be pretty starved for entertainment around here.

People on my server used to have discussions about this on trade... It was treated as a relic. People everywhere would reference this list in like every discussion, its like finding out that the declaration of Independence was a lie.

Until early this year I had forgotten I even made this post. Then, one day, I did what many people do when they're bored enough - they google their name and all their online pseudonyms to see just how much of a presence they had on Google. What I found floored me. Literally over a hundred results containing this humble little list I put together on a whim early one morning. I think I was actually waiting for my first morning class to start.

I had no idea how it got so popular, but soon people were swearing they saw the list back during WoW beta, or even earlier. Some point to a german forum as its point of origin, since to the uninitiated it looks as though it was posted months before I posted it here, and before WotLK was even announced. However, what they don't realize is that dates in Europe are ordered day-month-year. It was actually posted there after I wrote it, of course. Not many realized that, and so the adventure continued.

I certainly won't be doing anything like this again. Once is enough. I do a lot of honest writing and lorecrafting, and I don't want to be known as the guy who made all that expansion list stuff up.

While I'm glad it kick-started a lot of speculation (I love seeing people discussing WoW lore and the different uncharted regions of Azeroth and beyond), I do apologize for passing this off as fact. It won't happen again, promise.

The real truth is far more insidious and frightening… are you sitting down lore rangers and nerdragers?

Reinjin is Ghostcrawler!

My brothers sisters cousin works at Blizzard and they saw the memo that got sent out about leaking lore and the consequences. It turns out it was Ghostcrawler all along. And now having been remanded by his employers at Activision (aka Blizzard aka Vivendi aka THE REVERSE VAMPIRES!) he is now making a hasty attempt at FUD to cover his tracks.

Wake up people. The list is trufax. They have only modified the levels and release of zones in a minor way to throw you off the trail.

This is the holy grail. Never delete it and never surrender.

Thrall save us all.

I guess more than a few people who rated him into sub-default oblivion for calling the OP out owe Nathanyel an apology.

Thanks.
Admittedly, when I first encountered this list, probably not that long after its release, I believed it, too, wrote a long post on the official EU forums about how they could explain that Worgen stem from the Nathrezim homeworld etc. :P
Later, say, earlier this year, I wrote some posts here (less-developed than the last one) explaining why this is probably fake, but they got downrated and deleted. Good that this text, which I wrote after the registration of "Cataclysm", prevailed and (most likely *whistles*) made Reinjin admit it's fake ;)

I have no hard feelings for him, the list itself was a very good job, he did well-founded lore research to assemble it, and of course the chance for Maelstrom -> Planes -> Demon worlds was rather high.
I just hated the blind dumbness of people who swore that they had seen exactly this list even before fall 2007...

PS: How do you rate posts, anyway? I never see something for that...

The sad truth is that most of the people who saw this will never find out it was a hoax. That’s how the internet is--lies never die a clean death. Check out Snopes sometime, and see all the e-mail that continues to circulate despite being thoroughly debunked.

That’s because a percentage of people will believe anything, if it’s told to them by a friend. Obama’s birth certificate is fake. The moon landing was filmed in Hollywood. A dying girl wants you to send her a postcard. Microsoft will pay you to forward an e-mail to friends. Global warming doesn’t exist. No Jews died on 9/11. A Soviet drill crew heard the voice of Satan from an oil well.

People will still reference this thread in months, maybe years to come. Not because it’s funny, or clever, but because they heard it from a friend.

And to be blunt, people here aren’t taking in that lesson. They’re saying, “Wow, I was completely fooled by this post! Reinjin must be a genius of deception, nay, a trickster god!” When what they should be saying is, “Wow, I was completely fooled by this post! Man, am I a sucker. I should consider why I was willing to accept it without any real evidence!”

Which is a pity, because coming away with a little self-knowledge and skepticism from this paltry little hoax might innoculate people when the next trickster oils his or her way around the corner, because the next time the stakes might be higher than who gets the red or green arrow.

I just caught up with this conversation today. I agree with the "relic" comment; a lot of people used Reinjin's list as a go-to for future expansions.
RACK that, Reinjin! I personally had hoped your worgen rumor would turn out to be true before the draenei were announced; little did I know we just had to wait another couple of years!

Absolutely great job, even if it was unintentional, of giving these rumors life!
