Summary

Take Mertaire's bracelet to Ranguemont Pass and immerse it in the Waters of Oblivion.

Walkthrough

After speaking with Mertaire at I-8 in Lower Jeuno to start the quest, head to Ranguemont Pass and proceed into the room with the large stone door and the guards. You need to be in the northwestern-most chamber. Just keep heading north and -- after many bats, a few goblins and an eye or two -- you'll come to a room with evil weapons. This is the room you're supposed to be in. Clear out the weapons, rest, buff up, then click on the "Waters of Oblivion." This will spawn the notorious monster Tros.

The monster is weak to magic and strong against physical damage, so melee jobs should save TP for weaponskills before the fight starts. Tros can cast Waterga II, sometimes twice in a row, so barwatera or water carol helps.

As soon as you beat Tros, click on the "Waters of Oblivion" again and Mertaire appears for your cutscene. He gives you your Paper Knife on the spot. No need to go back to Jeuno.

Solo as 52 BST / 26 WHM
# Jan 18 2007 at 5:18 PM Rating: Decent
I use jug pet Funguar Familiar then 2 hours and wait for Call Beast to cool down. I pop NM and fought along with my pet but the NM spam Waterga II like no tomorrow. So I stay out of range and cure myself. My first pet took NM down around 55% so I call another jug pet and fight along with it but keep Barwatera up.. I found that NM is really weak to Paralyze which give me alot of advancetage to it. I kill NM with HP about 300 and my 2nd jug pet's HP was silver. I think it would be easier to fight if I bring some pet foods.

got a 55 rdm now, and as I've been getting a lot of help from my 75 nin friend lately, I would like to see if I can solo this, or maybe duo it with another rdm friend I've been doing most of my AF/cap quests with lately.

opinions from those that have fought it? could I solo with good soloing gear? would I need the other rdm? from what I've seen this has been real easy for 65s or so, so I figure it might be tough, but I could take it as a 55rdm, maybe /24nin.

Duoed at 60 with a 43 pld friend, was fun, pretty easy, but took a while. Fun times.
{Too weak}
# Mar 03 2006 at 9:47 AM Rating: Decent
This thing is so easy it's ridiculous.

Took 90 seconds as 66 DRG/WHM, I had to use Healing Breath twice, and that's only because I was showing a buddy how DRG/WHM works...

Waterga II is REALLY weak. Compared to other AF1 this is a walk in the park...

Just take someone 60+ and you'll have no problems.
Weaker than I thought

Okay, starts out 45brd (me) and a 65rng (Gladius)
We go to the "waters of oblivion" and take out the weapons for a TP build up. Cast sneak so Tros doesn't aggro me at the beginning. Songs were Valor Minuet III and II plus Barwatera. Rng opens up with Slug Shot + Eagle Eye shot + Barrage + Slug Shot. Massif damage. Then, just to use up my TP, I SC'ed Slug Shot with Shining Blade. Waterga II did nothing and it went very smoothly with it too. Battle took 30 secondes top. So, now, I got my Paper Knife and i'm very pleased with it for +CHR. Thanks again Gladius

i easily soloed this guy as a 73whm/36rdm
i came in expecting it to be easy.. and it was
i used phalanx and stoneskin and enfire most of the battle.
i orginally tried to keep it silenced then gave up
he only cast waterga2 on me once w/o stoneskin and it did a whopping 44 damage (without shell on)
the highest damage he posted was 105 with a cross attack and 95 with a tentacle
i'd say this mob is easier than the mobs you've got to kill for 50 cap items
hope that helps you all gauge his strength.
good luck on any aspiring bards, the knife looks pretty sweet.
easy

Ok just a lil info. after you activate quest as you bard you CAN solo it and get knife with another job. i went as a 71WHM/22NIN.

after fighting NM tho i realized that subbin nin wasnt a really good idea because or the -ga spell spaming so if i ever done again i would prolly sub rdm...also it spams blindga which also removes blink... it also done another effect i forget its name but seemed like a dispel or just a really hard hit but w/e it was it took stoneskin and blink off in one hit...i started fight with only 300mp or a lil more because i had 300tp and didnt wanna sit^^.. anyhow at end of fight i had only 20mp left...and i didnt have to cure my self any i just put up a regen3 once and thats all i had to do.. he has alot of hp as with any NM so i think it took me about 15mins or less to solo.

anyhow thats my 2cents worth so have fun with it any questions let me know and i can post more info if i have it^^

Copied and pasted for the most part from server forums because I'm way too lazy to write up another guide. All of the starting information is already here, so I'm only going to talk about the NM fight.

This is a very EZ fight. Easy cheese. Get two level 58+ to help out and you're good as gold. Here's my experience:

58 WHM/BLM
58 MNK/WAR
40 BRD/BLM

You'll need sneak for most of the mobs, ie, bats and jellies, but the gobs are sight, so take some oils/powders if you don't wanna take a WHM. At 58 nothing aggro'd me, you stop aggroing somewhere in the mid 50's. The location is (E-5) the most north-west place on the map.

We cleared the weapons in the room, then medded to full. Buffed up with Protectra/Shellra III, then Ballad and Valor Minuet II. MNK provoked the mob after it was spawned, but it already let out a pretty devestating AOE magic attack.

Yes, this is an BLM Octopus. wtf? Anyway, he can't be silenced, even with EM + Silence, so don't bother. Instead keep the casters out of AOE range, I had to stop meleeing and move back to heal. It has a lot of HP and the MNK was basically soloing it damage wise. It hit pretty fast, but all of my enfeebles landed save silence.

I'd recommend a RDM w/Refresh to stack w/Ballad, I would have brought a bottle of Yagudo Drink if I were to do this scenerio over again. By the end of the battle I had about 20 MP but that's mostly from the fight being a bit harder than I expected. Even though the NM has high HP, the MNK still beat it up in probably about two minutes, so not too shabby.

We got 5 XP for the battle, w

Anyway, good luck on your Paper Knife ^^

Gah, I wish I knew how easy it was to do it with so few people XD did it last night, and it took me 10 minutes to recruit a party of 5 (lvl 45 WHM, lvls 50 and 58 PLD, and a lvl 58 something else...), and when we got there, a lvl 75 PLD joining in the fun. There really was no time to do/make a plan, since the lvl 75 (who needed to do the quest too) pulled Tros right away. Anyways, it died in 30 seconds tops XD could have saved time if we didn't need a full party...

I got my Paper Knife yesterday! It looks great with my Elegant Shield. My Signa has been retired for now.

My pt setup:

BRD40/WHM20 (me)
MNK60/THF30
PLD55/WAR27
WAR43/PLD21

Very easy fight with our setup! By the time I sang Water Carol (for its Waterga II AoE) and Barwatera and sang Minuet II, it had a sliver of life left. ^^

a 5person pt of 46's like my Static did it, we were fine
DRK,PLD,WHM,BRD<me,41DRG(catching up)

only thing you have to worry about it AOE(area of effect) attacks, even if so just have a backup healer use curega *(like i did with Divine seal) about half way through the fight you'll know if ya have it or not.

after its dead, click on the thing in the water and ya get a brand spakin' new Knife.
