When i hail this guy with my erudite necro, i just get:
"Wilped the withered makes several high-pitched noises and waves his limbs about."
Having invis off, illusions off, made no difference whatsoever. Faction with this guy was indifferent. Do you need a minimum faction to get this guy to talk to you ?

you have to do the first quest, with Moldren, before you can understand wilped.
Moldren has been trying to communicate with a giant plant named Wilped the Withered. He believes that Wilped has a connection to the past but they can't communicate because he needs to recover a charm to speak with the plant.

Go into the SE house. The bookcase will be all the way at the back. Both books will be in this bookcase. One book is red in color, the other is kind of a tannish color. Assuming these have a spawn time so if not there, keep checking
he starts the second and third quests in the rebuild the portal series.

Make sure when you turn-in the two books. You turn them in both at the same time. The quest is bugged so if you turn them in one at a time you will only get 2/3 things you are actually supposed to receive.

Wilped also seems to have more information. I hailed him and got this, "Wilped the Withered looks surprised to hear the words of his kind being spoken to him. Wilped turns to you and says,' It's een so long since I have been able to speak with anyone. Who hasgiven you the ability to speak my language?" I answered "Moldern." Wilped the Withered says' Moldren... I rember when he first came to this area. It was a long time ago but many years after the [war]. I reply "war." Wilped the Withered says " A very long time ago Rallos Zek used this portal to open up the plane of earth. During the fight the portal closed and I was left trapped out here with no way to return to my home. With each year that has passed the hope to [return home ] is slipping away.' I replied 'home.' Wilped the Withered says ' I do very much wish to return home. I have been waiting for someone to come along and to help. Would you be [willing to help?]" I replied "willing to help." Wilped the Withered says ' the only way for me to return home is to re-open the portal. It was destroyed during the war and it will need a lot of work to [rebuild it.]'....the phrase 'rebuild it" does not work to continue text. I hope this helps with additional quest info for the war portal quest.

Turn in NPC for war portal quest. Kill the Giant Prohet in the Steppes, via cave near Icegladier falls. You loot the no drop charm and deliver the charm to Wilped the Withered and get task complete with clicky item. You will get task update titled, The Library. A little vague, but late and heading to Valdeholm to check the next task.

I am having trouble finding the Ancient books. I found the 2 homes with the book cases. Are the books in that home? I suppose someone may have taken them and I may have to wait on respawn.

The books are located to the right once you enter Valdehome. You will go past the hot springs and make the first right, then go to the houses located by the wolf pen. There is a named Giant and a few wolves that see invis, so timing is key. I know for certain Book 2 is at one of those houses. Necro friend told me book 1 is north of the wolf pen. I could not get book 1 to spawn, but still checking. I'm not sure if is bugged or not, but I keep returning to see if it spawns. Being a ranger, I use invis and sneak. Vague information, but the best I can give at this time. Avoid the war wolves and named. Goblin shroud should work great in this zone.

In the wolf pen area, I found three homes with bookshelves, all three in the south side of the area- two next to each other pointing directly south, and one pointing off to the southeast. As mentioned, you'll probably have to skirt see invis wolves and an Animal Tender named.
I've found one book so far. Book #2 is in the central house of the three I mentioned. It's a groundspawn on the bookshelves. They say you're looking for a giant book, but that's not quite true; the groundspawn I picked up was VERY tiny compared to the regular books around it. It's not hard to see if it's up.
Edit: Found the 2nd book. Knowing what I was looking for from the first, which I found in the open on one of the shelves, I found the other half hidden inside a book on another shelf. This one was inside the SE-facing house.
I suspect the books have a long respawn time.
