Patch 2.8.1 is now Live. All 3 US Servers have been merged to US 1.
For Patch Notes see the Announcements sub-forum.

City of Steam is a web-based game but it uses the Unity 3D 3.x Web Player to drive full-power 3D graphics. If you play in fullscreen mode with the graphics quality turned up you will not see a visual difference from any AAA title in the market! You have to install the Unity 3D Web Player plug-in before you can play the game, which can be installed from the link-ed name on this page or with the link on the City of Steam registration page.

  • Mechanist Games has regained the Western licensing for CoS from R2 Games, so R2 is out of the picture. Mechanist will be running the Western servers themselves and will have everything re-launched soon. With this publishing change is also a name change. The new name of CoS will be City of Steam: Arkadia.

City of Steam is set on the World Machine, a vast and ancient system of interlocking gears powered by unfathomable energies. Long ago, a race of ingenious conquerors called the Paragons sought to claim those energies for themselves, and destroyed themselves in the attempt. They left behind a shattered world and a complex legacy.

Even now, millennia after the Era of Myth, that legacy continues to affect the course of history on the World Machine. To the races that already inhabited the mechanism – humans, goblins, orcs, and hobbes – they added the charismatic riven, insular draug, and half-mechanical dwarves. Life on the Mechanism has been revolutionized by the study of the Praragons’ lost technologies. Airships soar overhead, robotic steamtoilers patrol the streets, and great factories produce weapons wielded by heroes and villains alike.

Four great human nations have emerged since the fall of the Paragons: The confederated city-state of the Heartlands, the allied kingdoms of Ostenia, the patriarchal Republic of Avenoss, and the harsh Empire of Stoigmar. At the site of the Paragons’ fall lay the City-State of Nexus, a once-great industrial cneter whose connection to the Era of Myth continues to attract attention from across the Mechanism.

Rumor has has it that somthing deep within Nexus has awakened – A secret that will change the world forever.

Unity

Only the 32-bit version of Unity 3d 4.x currently works. There is a 64-bit version but, since late last year, the status is still "Does not work with Unity 4.0", but City of Steam uses Unity 3D 3.x so it may work correctly. We have not tested it

Browser

Much discussion has taken place about the best browser to use when playing this game. I am not going to get into the Browser Wars™ debate here, but I will make a few observations here on my experiences so far.

  • Google Chrome: This is my preferred browser and the one I use most. The game performs well.
  • MS IE: Unity 3D seems to be a little more stable on this platform but IE seems to have problems with getting resources quickly. When first zoning in it takes much longer for all the icons to load, often causing a large lag-spike before things settle down. Also, upon leaving an instance it takes an extra minute or two for some character resources to load, such as the turn-in NPC outside the dungeon. Also, IE seems to have more trouble quickly and accurately responding to rapid mouse movement and action.
  • Opera: Other players have told me that Opera is the most stable platform for Unity 3D. After several days of testing this was not my experience. It was slower on resource loads than Chrome (but not as bad as IE) and crashed just as often but did not recover as smooothly as Chrome, often crashing the entire browser and not just the tab session.
  • Firefox: I have been told Unity 3D does not behave well under Firefox.
  • Safari: Personally untested but I have a company mate that plays on his Macintosh and claims that Safari performs well.

After playing on both Chrome and MSIE I have returned to Chrome because of the response amd resource lag issues. Since current issues like the GetThreadContext bug and Movement bug happen on both browsers I cannot say if they are a Unity or Mechanist issue.

About This Wiki

I originally played in the Alpha Test, and used that experience to gather some quest data, design a few templates, and try to basically lay out how this game works. Some of this had changed by the time Closed Beta launched, and I began re-working some of what I had already done, and scoping out the new additions.

Now CoS has become CoS: Arkadia and re-launched post-R2. Many, many changes have happened and I am working hard on improving my templates. An enormous number of Item pages need updating to the new format and stat reporting (I know I should not have gotten so far along on making Item pages).

Here is where you, the newly arrived player, come in. If you want this wiki to become a real community tool then we will need your help to make that happen. Make an account, click the Edit button, take charge of your obsession! My job here is not to completely document every item and quest in the game, it is to build the tools so that players who want to contribute here have what they need to do it.
