What is the Armoury System?

The Armoury System is what guides individual player growth in Final Fantasy XIV. Through the Armoury System, players can change their skill sets, play styles and character appearances by equipping different weapons or tools. The system is meant to give players optimal flexibility in how they experience FFXIV.

How the Armoury System Works

On the FFXIV Web site, the functionality of the system is illustrated through a fictional character named Leeroy. Here's what happens during a day in the life of Leeroy:

  • Leeroy decides to try his hand in swordplay, choosing the discipline of the Gladiator. He goes outside to fight wildlife on the edge of his town's borders.
  • Then some friends come and invite Leeroy to party with them in some nearby ruins. The party already has several accomplished warriors and mages, so Leeroy sheathes his sword and equips his staff, assuming the role of Thaumaturge, his most advanced class. He then joins his friend, fitting in with the party seamlessly.
  • After the ruins party, Leeroy is following the river back to town when he suddenly feels the urge to fish. He puts away his staff and pulls out his fishing rod, taking on the skills and abilities of a Fisher.
  • When he finally gets back to town, Leeroy equips a hammer to take on the abilities of a blacksmith. Using his skills he goes to work sharpening his blade and pounding the dents out from his armor. All in a day's work!

Disciplines of The Armoury

In general, player jobs in Final Fantasy XIV fall into one of four disciplinary paths: Disciples of War, Disciples of Magic, Disciples of the Land and Disciples of Hand.

Players can choose to specialize in one discipline or become well-rounded across several disciplines. Through use of the Armoury System, players can change their job disciplines on the fly to meet the needs of their parties.

Disciples of War

Fighters are weapon-masters who live for battle. In English, they will be called "Disciples of War" and have open to them various classes that excel at physical damage. Disciples of War will be able to equip a broad range of weapons, such as swords, spears, axes, katana, daggers, bows and more. Classes include:

Disciples of Magic

Sorcerers wield vessels of magic imbued with great power and harness sorcery to harm and heal. These "Disciples of Magic" will be adept at striking foes with destructive spells and assisting their allies with soothing cantrips. One vessel of magical power that has been revealed is the Staff, with others expected to follow. The way the articles refer to these "weapons" makes it seem that magical weapons will play much less of a physically offensive role, and rather boost the user's powers. Only two classes of this discipline will be available, including:

Disciples of the Hand

Crafters drive the manufacturing and production side of Eorzea. By equipping various tools, one can enter a number of trades. There are a total of eight classes in this discipline, including:

Disciples of the Land

Gatherers will cover most of the HELM activities of Final Fantasy XIV. These include, but may not be limited to, Hunting, Excavating, Lumbering, Mining and Fishing. By taking a tool in hand, players can improve their skills in a variety of professions. Classes include:
