What Leatherworking Creates

Most obviously, leatherworking makes leather armor. There are also armor kits that can be applied to certain items for a bonus, similiar to enchants, as well as quivers and ammo pouches for hunters. At later levels, leatherworking expands into also some types of mail armor.

What Leatherworking Requires

Leatherworking needs, well, leather! Leather typically comes from skinning dead beasts. A majority of the other materials needed for LW come from skinning as well, such as the scales for mail armor.

Is Leatherworking For Me?

Leatherworking is a good personal tradeskill and a so-so one for supporting other players. It is primarily taken up by classes that initially use leather armor. (Rogues, druids, shamans, hunters.)

In terms of making money, leatherworking is not wonderful, but there are a few select patterns that can be capitalized on, especially depending on your specialization.

The benefits of being your own leatherworker include certain high-end pieces of equipment, and there are some recipes that drop in instances that are bind on pickup, as are the items they make. Leatherworkers can also create and use Drums of Battle, Drums of Panic, Drums of Restoration, Drums of Speed and Drums of War which are desired in some raid encounters.

Specialization

Beyond a skill level of 225 (and character level 40,) leatherworkers can choose to specialize in Tribal, Elemental, or Dragonscale leatherworking. Each style is catered toward a particular style of combat.

  • Tribal is primarily for leather-wearing casters, such as restoration and balance druids.
  • Elemental focuses on combat for leather-workers. This is generally the preferred choice for rogues and perhaps feral druids.
  • Dragonscale creates scale mail for hunters and shamans.
