Primary Role

The protection tree is the paladin's tanking tree, specializing in reducing incoming damage and generating threat. There are many

early talents in the tree that can be useful for Holy or Retribution

paladins to round out their build and add some survivability. Deeper in the tree, however, the focus is entirely on tanking.

Tier 1

Divinity Increases all healing done by you and all healing effects on you by 1/2/3/4/5% 5
Divine Strength Increases your total Strength by 3/6/9/12/15%. 5

Tier 2

(Requires 5 points spent in Protection)
Stoicism Reduces the duration of all Stun effects by an additional 10/20/30% and reduces the chance your spells will be dispelled by an additional 10/20/30%. 3
Guardian's Favor Reduces the cooldown of your Hand of Protection by 60/120 sec and increases the duration of your Hand of Freedom by 2/4 sec 2
Anticipation Increases your chance to dodge by 1/2/3/4/5%. 5

Tier 3

(Requires 10 points spent in Protection)
Divine Sacrifice 30% of all damage taken by party or raid members within 30 yards is redirected to the paladin (up to a maximum of 150% of the Paladin's health). Lasts 10 sec. 2 min cooldown 1
Improved Righteous Fury While Righteous Fury is active, all damage taken is reduced by 2/4/6% 3
Toughness Increases your armor value from items by 2/4/6/8/10% and reduces the duration of all movement slowing effects by 6/12/18/24/30%. 5

Tier 4

(Requires 15 points spent in Protection)
Divine Guardian (Requires 1 point in Divine Sacrifice). Improves the effectiveness of your Divine Sacrifice spell by an additional 5/10% and increases the duration of your Sacred Shield by 50/100% and the amount absorbed by 5/10%. 2
Improved Hammer of Justice Decreases the cooldown of your Hammer of Justice Spell by 10/20 sec. 2
Improved Devotion Aura Increases the armor bonus of your Devotion Aura by 17/34/50% and increases the amount healed on any target affected on any target affected by any of your Auras by 2/4/6%. 3

Tier 5

(Requires 20 points spent in Protection)
Blessing Of Sanctuary Places a Blessing on the friendly target, reducing damage taken from all sources by 3% for 10 minutes. In addition, when the target blocks, parries, or dodges a melee attack the target will gain 2% of maximum mana. Players may only have one

Blessing on them per Paladin at any one time.

Reckoning Gives you a 2/4/6/8/10% chance after blocking or being hit by any damaging attack that the next 4 weapon swings within 8 seconds will generate an additional attack. 5

Tier 6

(Requires 25 points spent in Protection)
Sacred Duty Increases your total Stamina by 4/8%, reduces the cooldown of your Divine Shield and Divine Protection spells by 30/60 sec. 2
One-Handed Weapon Specialization Increases all damage you deal when a one-handed melee weapon is equipped by 4/7/10%. 3

Tier 7

(Requires 30 points spent in Protection)
Spiritual Attunement A passive ability that gives the Paladin mana when healed by other friendly targets' spells. The amount of mana gained is equal to 5/10% of the amount healed. 2
Holy Shield (Requires 1 point in Blessing of Sanctuary). Increases chance to block by 30% for 10 seconds and deals Holy damage for each attack blocked while active. Each block expends a charge. 8 charges. 1
Ardent Defender When you have less than 35% health, all damage taken is reduced by10/20/30%. 3

Tier 8

(Requires 35 points spent in Protection)
Redoubt Increases your block value by 10/20/30% and damaging melee and ranged attacks against you have a 10% chance to increase your chance to block by 10/20/30%. Lasts 10 seconds or 0 blocks. 3
Combat Expertise Increases your expertise by 2/4/6, total Stamina and chance to critically hit by 2/4/6%. 3

Tier 9

(Requires 40 points spent in Protection)
Touched by the Light Increases your spell power by an amount equal to 10/20/30% of your Stamina and increases the amount healed by your critical heals by 10/20/30% 3
Avenger's Shield (Requires 1 point in Holy Shield). Hurls a shield at the enemy causing a high amount of holy damage, dazing them and jumping to 2 additional enemies. 1
Guarded by the Light Reduces spell damage taken by 3/6% and gives a 50/100% chance to refresh the duration of your Divine Plea spell is 50/100% less likely to be dispelled. 2

Tier 10

(Requires 45 points spent in Protection)
Shield of the Templar (Requires 1 point in Avenger's Shield.) Reduces all damage taken by 1/2/3% and grants your Avenger's Shield a 33/66/100% chance to silence your targets for 3 sec. 3
Judgements of the Just Reduces the cooldown of your Hammer of Justice by 10/20 sec, increases the duration of your Seal of Justice effect by 0.5/1 sec and your Judgement spells also reduce the melee attack speed of the target by 10/20%. 2

Tier 11

(Requires 50 points spent in Protection)
Hammer of the Righteous Hammer the current target and up to 2 additional nearby targets, causing 4 times your main hand damage per second as Holy damage. 1
