Money (WoW)

Money in World of Warcraft is broken up into three separate types - Gold, Silver and Copper, or a combination of any those types of coins. This medium is used to buy goods and services from players and vendors in the game. Your current total is shown at the bottom right of your open backpack window.

Using Money

Coins can be spent at vendors, traded for goods or services (such as Enchants to weapons or armor), mailed to other characters, used to bid on auctions in the Auction House, used as a deposit on an auction in the Auction House or saved for a specific item, such as a Travelers Mammoth.

Money is also used to buy additional bank slots for players, guilds and stable slots for hunters.

Accumulating Money

"Makin' gold" can be done several ways, depending on how you like to play the game. It can be looted from defeated mobs, gained from completing quests, acquired by means of selling items to vendors, made via trade or mail from other players or by judicious use of the Auction House. The downside to using the Auction House, however, is if you put a deposit down to auctioning an item, you lose that deposit if it doesn't sell or you cancel the auction. Fortunately, any failed bids do get returned via mail to the player.

Coin Types

There are currently three different types of coins used in the game. Gold, silver and copper.

  • Gold coins - Also known as gold pieces. They look like so: 1
  • Silver coins - Also known as silver pieces. They look like so: 1
  • Copper coins - Also known as copper pieces. They look like so: 1

Coin Breakdowns

Coins are automatically "scaled up" in game to prevent massive amounts of lower coins being accumulated. While there are no weight limits associated to coins like there used to be in Everquest, it is nevertheless easier to have them converted up in value for the player.

  • 100 = 1
  • 100 = 1
  • 10,000 = 1
