How to Fly Your Mount

These instructions only work in zones where flying is enabled!

To launch into the air on your mount, use the "Move Up" hotkey. This is generally defaulted to the "Home" key on your keyboard, but some keymappings may have it as the spacebar or no hotkey at all. If you need to modify or set this hotkey, it is found in Options -> Commands -> Movement Commands.

Once you are in the air, you can move with the arrow keys, wasd or mouse, just as you would on the ground. The biggest difference is that you can move up and down as well, which may make mouse movement the most optimal for controlling your mount. If you angle straight down at the ground your gryphon will do a dive-bomb animation, which is pretty neat to check out!

Another way to launch into flight is by jumping off of a cliff. That may sound crazy, but it works. You will fall for a short distance before your gryphon will suddenly come to a halt and be flying.

Your gryphon will land as soon as its feet touch the ground.

Some other things of note:

  • You cannot interact with objects (such as harvest nodes, zone doors, quest update clickies, etc) while flying.
  • You cannot speak to NPCs while flying.
  • You cannot use any abilities while flying.
  • You cannot attack while flying.
  • You can be knocked out of the air if you get aggro while flying! Even if you are falling for a great distance if this happens, you cannot relaunch into flight or have your gryphon "catch" itself into flight until you lose aggro.
  • If you do get aggro but do not get knocked out of the air, you can continue to fly, but be wary of your surroundings if this happens!
  • Some zones will force you down to the ground in certain locations. This is intentional and was done mostly due to issues with zone art in those areas. It normally occurs in narrow paths or caves. Some of these locations will have a ceiling gradually force you down, while others will cause you to suddenly fall to the ground. Notable locations that this occurs:
    • Lesser Faydark: The narrow path near the Shadow Grove.
    • Frostfang Sea: The cave between New Halas and Erollisi Docks, as well as the cave leading to the housing/tradeskill area, Ravens' Roost.
    • Greater Faydark: The narrow path of Echo Echo Cavern.
  • Hitting the "jump" hotkey while standing still on the ground will cause your gryphon to do a rearing-up animation. However, if you have your "jump" and "move up" hotkey mapped to the same key, launching into flight will take precedence unless you are in a no-fly zone.
