The Elemental Tree is the shaman talent tree which focuses on dealing damage from a distance with lightning spells. It contains talents which boost the damage done by spells, reduces their mana cost and increases the benefit totems give to the party.

Primary uses

The Elemental tree turns a shaman into a devastating ranged damage dealer. In a party or raid setting they provide a damage boost to the spell casters in their party through totems and Heroism/ Bloodlust. Many people choose to wait until they reach the Outland before going elemental as there is not much gear to be found in the old world to support the spec. However, it is definitely possible to level as elemental right from the first talent point, if a little slower than it would be as enhancement.

Tier 1

  • Convection (5 points) - Reduces the mana cost of your Shock, Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning spells by 10%. A must have talent
  • Concussion (5 points) - Increases the damage done by your Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning and Shock spells by 5%. Another must have talent.

Tier 2

(5 points required)

  • Earth's Grasp (2) - Increases the health of your Stoneclaw Totem by 50% and the radius of your Earthbind Totem by 20%. Not a good place to spend 2 talent points.
  • Elemental Warding (3) - Reduces damage taken from Fire, Frost and Nature effects by 10%. Useful in a raiding build when working on content that involved a lot of elemental damage.
  • Call of Flame (3) - Increases the damage done by your Fire Totems by 15%. Not taken in a raid build involving Totem of Wrath as it will be your primary fire totem.

Tier 3

(10 points required)

  • Elemental Focus (1) - After landing a critical strike with a Fire, Frost, or Nature damage spell, you enter a Clearcasting state. The Clearcasting state reduces the mana cost of your next 0 damage spells by 40%. An excellent investment of one talent point as it helps immensely with mana efficiency.
  • Reverberation (5) - Reduces the cooldown of your Shock spells by 1 sec. Generally used as a place for filler points in a pve build, but definitely has it’s place in a pvp build.
  • Call of Thunder (5) - Increases the critical strike chance of your Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning spells by an additional 5%. Affects both your nukes, a must have talent.

Tier 4

(15 points required)

  • Improved Fire Totems (2) - Reduces the delay before your Fire Nova Totem activates by 2 sec. and decreases the threat generated by your Magma Totem by 50%. Again, not generally taken in a raid build because Totem of Wrath is the fire totem of choice.
  • Eye of the Storm (3) - Gives you a 100% chance to gain the Focused Casting effect that lasts for 6 seconds after being the victim of a melee or ranged critical strike. The Focused Casting effect prevents you from losing casting time on Shaman spells when taking damage. A great pvp talent, and also a possible location for filler points in a pve raid build.
  • Elemental Devastation (3) - Your offensive spell crits will increase your chance to get a critical strike with melee attacks by 9% for 10 seconds. While raiding you will rarely (if ever) be in melee range and even if you were your melee capabilities are so weak that a crit would not help them. Don’t spend points here.

Tier 5

(20 points required)

  • Storm Reach (2) - Increases the range of your Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning spells by 6 yards. A useful way to spend 2 talent points. Some swear by this talent while other prefer to use the 2 points to max out Unrelenting Storm.
  • Spell: Elemental Fury (16089 (1)) - Increases the critical strike damage bonus of your Searing, Magma, and Fire Nova Totems and your Fire, Frost, and Nature spells by 100%. An excellent talent. Spell criticals go from being 150% of normal damage to 200% of normal damage.
  • Unrelenting Storm (5) - Regenerate mana equal to 10% of your Intellect every 5 sec, even while casting. Another talent to help mana efficiency. Usually 5/5 taken, or 3/5 in order to max out Storm Reach.

Tier 6

(25 points required)

  • Elemental Precision (3) - Increases your chance to hit with Fire, Frost and Nature spells by 6% and reduces the threat caused by Fire, Frost and Nature spells by 10%. Spell hit and threat reduction all wrapped into one package, what’s not to like?
  • Lightning Mastery (5) - Reduces the cast time of your Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning spells by 0.5 sec. More casts = higher dps = good talent to get

Tier 7

(30 points required)

  • Elemental Mastery (1) – Requires Elemental Fury. When activated, this spell gives your next Fire, Frost, or Nature damage spell a 100% critical strike chance and reduces the mana cost by 100%. Increases your damage and also gets a guaranteed Clearcasting proc.
  • Elemental Shields (3) - Reduces the chance you will be critically hit by melee and ranged attacks by 6%. Can be useful in a pvp build, but not in a pve build.

Tier 8

(35 points required)

  • Lightning Overload (5) - Gives your Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning spells a 20% chance to cast a second, similar spell on the same target at no additional cost that causes half damage and no threat. A great talent on it’s own merit but also required for the 41 point talent.

Tier 9

(40 points required)

  • Totem of Wrath (1) - Summons a Totem of Wrath with 5 health at the feet of the caster. The totem increases the chance to hit and critically strike with spells by 3% for all party members within 20 yards. Lasts 2 minutes. Great buff to the caster group in raids. Not taken in a pvp in order to get Nature's Swiftness in the resto tree instead.

Typical Points Spent

Example raid build
Example raid build
The key talents in the Elemental Tree are:

  • 5/5 Convection
  • 5/5 Conduction
  • 1/1 Elemental Focus
  • 5/5 Call of Thunder
  • 1/1 Elemental Fury
  • 3/3 Elemental Precision
  • 5/5 Lightning Mastery
  • 1/1 Elemental Mastery
  • 5/5 Lightning Overload
  • 1/1 Totem of Wrath
(5 points are also generally spent as either 5/5 Unrelenting Storm or 2/2 Storm Reach and 3/5 Unrelenting Storm with 4 points as filler)

The remaining 20 points are spent in the resto tree in order to get Nature's Guidance and Tidal Mastery. The first 10 points are filler so can technically be spent however you like, but generally an elemental raid build looks like the image to the right.
