What Fishing Creates

Most obviously, fishing rewards you with fish. There are other items that are sometimes caught, however there are many different items that CAN be caught during fishing.

What Fishing Requires

Literally, fishing requires a fishing rod, a pool of water, and some free time to sit and watch a bobber until the "bite" occurs and you can reel in your catch. In order to fish successfully, however, you will typically want to use a lure of some kind, which dramatically improves your fishing skill for a period. The difficulty of fishing in an area is determined by the zone, and some zones essentially require a skill well above what should normally be attainable for your level (or at all!)

Is Fishing For Me?

Fishing is a secondary skill, which means there is no reason to specifically avoid it, but some players find it extremely boring or worthless. If you have room in your bag for a fishing rod, sometimes it can't hurt to fill a dull period while waiting for a group, but most players who fish do so because they enjoy it or because they are trying to catch specific fish for cooking or for alchemy.

In terms of making money, fishing isn't much of an AH killer. However, anything you catch is pure profit, and sometimes you will reel in some items that are worth selling to a vendor. Although the cash flow is not highly rewarding, fishing can be done with little-to-no danger.

There are a select few items that can only be found through fishing, such as Mr. Pinchy, a non-combat pet. There is also the fishing extravaganza in Booty Bay, which has its own unique reward for fishermen. There are two raid bosses in the game, Gahz'ranka and The Lurker Below, who can only be summoned by fishing.

Fishing Quests

Quests strictly for Fishermen

There are a handful of quests that require fish, including:

  • Horde:
    • Snapjaws, Mon! - While this quest doesn't require fishing, it does provide a very nice fishing pole as a reward and is well worth doing if you're playing a horde character.

Leveling Information

With the release of the new expansion, Wrath of the Lich King and its latest patch, 3.1, all trainers can train their appropriate skill levels now. Books are no longer required.

Other Fishing Info

The actual act of fishing is performed using a skill that will appear in the general tab of your spellbook. If you have a fishing rod equipped and are pointed out over a body of water, a fishing bobber should appear somewhere in the water. Within the next minute, the bobber will sink briefly to represent a fish taking your bait, and you must right-click on the bobber to reel him in. Higher-level areas generally require higher skill for fancier fish, but unlike other tradeskills, fishing can be done entirely to the cap from what you start with, which is why many players recommend simply fishing in the Stormwind Canals or some other basic place.

All fish are in one of two categories, freshwater or saltwater. Every body of water will only be one or the other. If you are trying to catch a particular fish, such as Oily Blackmouth, you will need to seek the proper area.

In order to encourage fishing to be a meaningful activity to skill up and take with you on the road, you will sometimes find schools of fish. If you fish near one of these areas, you are guaranteed to have a bite from the fish that are in it, and the school will remain until you catch a few fish from it, much like a mining node. There are other expanses of water that are similiar to schools, but exist for other objects, such as floating debris in the water (random junk) and pools of pure water (elemental water).

It is particularly useful to fish in the floating debris in the water since you may get lucky and get the book that will allow you to learn how to spot pools of fish on your mini-map rather than having to look at the bodies of water for the round glowing area. Once you 'catch' that book, you read it to learn how to find fish. Then, you can switch that skill on (much like you turn on your Find Herbs or Find Mines skill). To date, the book seems to be between rare and common... so there is a decent chance to find the book if you fish from the floating debris every time you see it.

Besides lures, there are other items which can be obtained to increase a players fishing skill. The items that can be used to increase fish skill are the fishing pole from the Kalu'ak (attained at Exalted reputation from them), the lucky fishing hat (adds +5 fishing), eternium fishing line (adds +5 fishing when applied to a fishing pole) and fishing boots (adds +5 fishing). All of these items are obtained through catching rare fish or reputation rewards that spawn in the tasty fish pools during the fishing contest in Stranglethorn Vale every Sunday between 2-4pm server time.
