More Chocobo Raising!(06/19/2006)

In this next installment, we bring you more in-depth information from the world of chocobos! What is a Chocobo? The chocobo is a large, herbivorous bird with powerful legs and a sharp, sturdy beak. Its size and impressive speed make it the most popular type of mount in Vana'diel. Although too small to allow flight, the chocobo's wings assist in keeping balance and also function as a type of brake. A species native to the La Theine Plateau, the wild chocobo were once seen racing across the plains in great numbers. However, as the people of Vana'diel began to realize the utility of this fleet-footed creature, more and more chocobos were captured and domesticated. A truly wild chocobo is now a rare sight to behold. Adventurers mainly use the chocobo as a mount, but there are those who are skilled at using gysahl greens to have the animal dig holes, taking advantage of its natural instinct to bury food. Domestic Chocobos Elvaan have raised chocobos for use in farming, hunting, and general labor since before recorded history. But once the practice of riding bareback was civilized with the invention of reins and saddles, the number of people using chocobo mounts suddenly soared. Merchants now preferred chocobos for long, overland journeys, and the military adopted the birds for use in highly mobile cavalry units. People began selective breeding programs as the chocobo craze spread to every corner of Vana'diel. Recently, the chocobo races held at a local level have been elevated to the world stage, garnering unprecedented attention. Chocobo Breeds Destrier These knightly mounts were bred in San d'Oria. They underwent training that allowed them to bear the weight of heavy armor and withstand the shock of cavalry charges. Destriers were characterized by their large, jet-black bodies and thick, powerful legs. With the decline of lance combat and improvements to ranged weaponry, destriers lost their place in battle to the faster coursers. These days, there are no remaining purebred destriers, but it is possible to see their proud bloodlines occasionally reemerge in the birth of rare, black chocobos. Courser The courser is a larger-than-average chocobo and is the most common breed found in the Kingdom of San d'Oria. They are characterized by their streamlined bodies, and long, graceful legs. They were originally bred for scouting duties, but their adoption into the military was accompanied by a general acceptance of the courser as an everyday mount. On extremely rare occasions, a red-colored courser will be born. Palfrey The mid-sized palfreys were bred to withstand the searing air and blazing heat of the desert. They are mainly raised in the Republic of Bastok and on Zepwell Island. With a relatively gentle demeanor, these chocobos are suited for those with who lack advanced riding skills. Palfreys are known to come in both blue and yellow. Jennet This breed of chocobo has been magically reduced in size to provide mounts for the diminutive Tarutaru. They have short legs when compared to other breeds, but like the Tarutaru themselves, jennets are capable of maintaining a rapid pace. Due to a request from the southern Mithra wishing to blend into the jungle, there are some jennets that can be found in a shade of green. Rounsey With its huge population of adventurers, Jeuno boasts more frequent use of chocobos than any other nation. The main type of chocobo to be found in the duchy is the mid-sized rounsey. The pride of the famous trainer Brutus and his family, the rounsey is the result of a lengthy breeding program involving wild chocobos. This program has produced a robust mount of somewhat unpredictable temperament that is suited for long, punishing treks. Calling Your Chocobo Along with the new chocobo raising system, in the upcoming version update we will be introducing the ability to call chocobos. This feature will allow players to call up and ride the chocobo they have lovingly raised. No longer will adventurers have to rely on rental chocobos for traveling around Vana'diel! Players will be able to call their very own chocobos anywhere, at anytime. Impress your friends with your personal chocobo mount! Calling Your Chocobo Calling your chocobo will involve an enchant item, similar to the signal pearl or empress band. With the appropriate item equipped, you will be able to call your trusty mount at any time, in any area where chocobo riding is permitted. We are planning on setting the enchant recast to a time period that won't adversely affect in-game balance. Rather than making it possible to recall your chocobo immediately after dismounting, it will be necessary to wait for a certain amount of time. Your Own Personal Chocobo Colors Aside from the familiar yellow, we will be introducing two new colors for chocobos. We invite you to try chocobo raising for yourself to discover what colors are available. Additional colors will make an appearance in subsequent version updates. Appearance The appearance of your chocobo will change depending on the attributes it acquires. These changes will affect a part of the chocobo, such as its beak or legs, rather than change its appearance entirely. Attributes Depending on the method used to raise your chocobo, its attributes will be slightly enhanced or decreased. For example, some chocobos may run a little faster, while others may be ridden for longer periods of time. Digging Just as with a rental chocobo, it will be possible to dig with your personal mount. Perhaps you may notice a difference when digging with a chocobo that you have personally raised with love and care? Additional information will be released in late June as the version update approaches.

I can't wait. <3 I hope they don't take too long to breed though. I remember in the last update it said up to 3 months? I could be rembering wrong.

But yeah, I can't wait. Me and my friends already ghetto chocobo race, will be nice to be able to have real ones now. <3 I hope they let you rent it out too, like Diorama Abdhwtf-Ghelsba. So like, you and your friends could race against each other. That would be cool. :)

And I hope they come out with more colors. ._. A white or grey one would be smexeh. :]

I think this is misleading because if u read the part about the different types of chocobos you'll see that they state the colors black, red, green, blue, and yellow. The black and reds ones are special ones so maybe they didn't count those when they said the quote.

but the 2 breeds at are from sandy the black and one of the yellow ones, only sandy people should be able to get them, it would be cool if they had the sandy flag on too

All outdoor areas?

Here is my question...

Basically, it would seem that chocobo riding is accessible to outdoor areas, and not dungeons. The limit is... they have to be tied to a city ;-;.

But... will this open up the possibility of using Chocobos in areas not necessarily accessible before, but still acceptable by the rules?

Or in short.

Can i ride the bird in Xarcabard and Beaucedine Glacier? Cuz Beau would be a heaven-sent.

Yeah... let's ride our chocobos through all Dynamis-Windurst, straight to the <Mega Boss>!!! :P
Obviously that won't happen... ^^'

Somehow I bet they won't let you ride a chocobo in Beaucedine or Xarcabard. Course, I'd love to be proved wrong.
On riding
# Jun 20 2006 at 6:47 AM Rating: Excellent
First off everything I've read up to this point said that they were not gonna let them be ridden, so I'm ecstatic that we can.
Second off the reason they gave for them no being rideable was cuz they didn't want the choco stables to be an unused aspect of the game, which they would be if we could ride and call an unlimited time.
Third, I could care less if it had a 24 hour reset timer, I'm still ecstatic, just means I still rent choco's just as often, and I only am not forced to walk back from places that have no choco's. (i.e. Valkrum, Yuhtunga, etc.)
Fourth, there is awesome potential for future updates, as some really great ideas have been posted here already.
That's it for me, with love to SE.

God Bless,
Jayedaan

they won't be unused, lol
if the set the recharge timer to 20hours like NPC signal pearl or 16h like empress and chariot rings.

I personally use about 2-20 chcobos a day depending on what I do. (cheaper than getting a tele for 2-5k :) )
can't wait

i thought everyone should check out the playonline website, because they have pictures of all the chocobos they mentioned in the breed section of this post - they're drawings, but enjoyable none-the-least.

Chocobo Bedding ftw!
still need Chocobo license
# Jun 19 2006 at 10:48 PM Rating: Excellent
Havent seen it mentioned so I will but I'm thinkin that since you need a chocobo licence to 'ride' a chocobo, would breeders be likewise limited this way? Do we use the same license to be permitted to breed them or do we do a 'chocobo breeding license' quest? As I understand from what I've read from the announcement, all you need is to find the egg. Am i wrong? Otherwise we cant ride the birds till your riding character is lvl20 whether bred or rented, right? Any comments?

Hehe, licenses...Imagine...

FittyGil: uh what seems to be the problem, officer?
Knight: Do you know how fast your chocobo was going?
FittyGil: Sorry officer, I was tryin to catch the ship out of Mhaura while its still new moon and...
Knight: Yeah, yeah. License and registration please.
FittyGil: Its a rental..
Knight: No kidding, license..
FittyGill: uh...I musta left it in my other slops when I changed?
Knight: Yeah right. Get off the bird , turn around , hands in the air..
Knight: I said hands in the air!
FittyGil: They are! Im a taru! Whats the big cudgel for?
Knight: For riding without a license.
FittyGil: MERCIFUL MOTHER OF ALTANA!!!
Honestly...

I hope breeding will take part on making the ultimate chocobo. Kinda like breeding in Pokemon, where it takes more than once to breed a good pokemon with good stats.

Like, to make a chocobo that runs fast as hell, you would have to breed it 3-5 times with a correct breed, and make sure it's a corresponding breed.

I say 1 to 2 Hours recharge MAX!

Although I'd rather have a 15minute recast instead but that's just wishful thinking....

I can dig anywhere chocobo can be called in. I am sure this will only apply in outdoors. I can escape from the RMT diggers now. Hopefully with love I will get digging bonus. For example during cresent when weather pops after I dismount regular bird. /joy!

Why do some people seem to have the impression that Chocobo Raising is somehow influenced by World of Warcraft? I can't possibly comprehend what kind of thoughts are passing through your tiny dime-sized brain.

Apparently Blizzard inventeded the idea of mounted animals? It's not like people have ridden on and raised beasts of burden for thousands of years or anything. It is also not like Chocobo breeding and racing was featured in Final Fantasy games before World of Warcraft was even a concept.

Oh my gawds Final Fantasy has ******* swords they totally copied like the Middle Ages lawl.

Well, if you want to split hairs, FFVII. That was when choco raising was introduced. long before the world of MMOs. As for the idea of mounted rides. That was FF2 if memory serves me correctly, it may have been as late as 3, but I am pretty positive they were in 2.

So, for many of us excited about it, it's not about the whole we have a mounted ride blah blah blah. It's about the fact that we get our own Riding Chicken!!!

Oh, and don't get me wrong, Muds had mounted rides long before Final Fantasy 1 was even thought of... So yeah, I am not saying the idea of mounted rides came from Final Fantasy. I would say it's almost impossible to find what was the first game to offer mounted rides, however, I see that as a moot point.

I just think people want to find ways to say one thing is imitating another thing. The arguement of innovation vs immitation. But, whatever, I get my ChocoBird, and it will be named Fred... I hope...
