Live-Action Warcraft Movie Coming to Big Screen

We have speculated and commented, dreamed and fantasized... Now it is official!
BLIZZARD ENTERTAINMENT® AND LEGENDARY PICTURES TO PRODUCE LIVE-ACTION WARCRAFT® MOVIE Fantasy game franchise played by millions worldwide to become major motion picture IRVINE, Calif. -- May 9, 2006 -- Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. and Legendary Pictures today announced that they have entered into an agreement to develop a live-action film based on Blizzard Entertainment®'s award-winning Warcraft® universe. Based on the terms of the agreement, Legendary Pictures has acquired the movie rights for the best-selling game universe, and both companies are now focused on translating the high-quality Warcraft entertainment experience to the big screen. "We searched for a very long time to find the right studio for developing a movie based on one of our game universes," said Paul Sams, chief operating officer of Blizzard Entertainment. "Many companies approached us in the past, but it wasn't until we met with Legendary Pictures that we felt we'd found the perfect partner. They clearly share our high standards for creative development, and because they understand the vision that we've always strived for with our Warcraft games, we feel there isn't a better studio out there for bringing the Warcraft story to film." "One of our goals at Legendary Pictures has been to bring heroic stories to life in groundbreaking ways, and it's inspiring to work with a company such as Blizzard that takes that approach with each of its products," stated Legendary Pictures chairman and CEO Thomas Tull. "The Warcraft universe is possessed of such a rich mythology and, as such, serves as an ideal platform as we go about translating that universe into what we intend to be a major event film." Blizzard's Warcraft games have developed a loyal following since the series debuted in 1994. Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness™, released in 1995, won multiple Game of the Year awards and is still considered one of the best games ever made, and Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos™ broke multiple sales records when it launched in 2002. World of Warcraft®, Blizzard's latest entry in the critically acclaimed franchise, has quickly become one of the world's most popular online games, with more than 6 million paying customers worldwide. "From our first Warcraft game to our latest novels, our intention has always been to develop a rich fantasy universe that could support stories and products in many forms," stated Chris Metzen, Blizzard Entertainment's vice president of creative development. "In addition to being a truly rewarding experience for us, the creation of this motion picture also feels like a natural next step for the Warcraft universe." "It's not always the case that interactive game properties lend themselves to proper adaptation to film," said Jon Jashni, Legendary Pictures' chief creative officer. "We are intending to approach this as we would the adaptation of a best-selling novel: respect the essence of all that it is but also build upon that fertile base while translating it into a new medium." Further details about the upcoming Warcraft movie, including director, cast, and targeted release date, will be revealed in the months ahead. About Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. My guess is that Blizard will make the story of the movie to match what they're going to realease at the same time. Much like Movie-games comming out around the time of the movie. The night the movie comes out, there would be a patch with said events added. Makes Hollywood sense to me. Anyone else agree?
Live-Action?

When I popped in my WoW disks and watched the wet-pants inducing opening cinematic for the game I prayed that they would make an animated full-length movie. I just saw Advent Children and absolutly loved the graphics *cough* wish somebody with that money and talent would make a movie aimed at people above the age of 12 *cough*. Anyway, I don't see how I can take a World of Warcraft live-action movie seriously. The idea of a guy in a white gown casting spells at monsters while a midget in black tights sneaks up and shanks em' in the ankle is laughable. Mabey they'll go a more Lord of the Ringsy route. Sure as hell hope so. I'm being silly. They'll do a good job. They better, with all that money.

Even if fanatics start protesting for the release, they had better take their time making it. Examples of movies that took forever to make: Star Wars, LoTR.
Point made?

I hope Blizzard will kick their *** so they will make a nice film. However, Legendary Pictures did Superman return and Batman Begins... not that bad.

I really hope they base it on "Lord of the Clans"...or even put the "The War of the Ancients" trilogy into one movie. Of course, any of Blizzards story lines would be fine, I just hope they dont do what they did with "Doom".

How about people read the news fully and look to see what it is about. It says that it is based on the books, so if you want to know anything that is going to be in it, pick up a book and read. :)

actually, if you go back and read it again.. ^^ then you'll see this is not true...

"We are intending to approach this as we would the adaptation of a best-selling novel: respect the essence of all that it is but also build upon that fertile base while translating it into a new medium."

This doesn't mean they are basing it on the novels, it just means they are creating the film in pretty much the same way other studios have made films adapted from novels, for ex. Harry Potter.

Basically, they're saying that everything Warcraft combined, from Warcraft 1 - WoW .. maybe even including some Warcraft novels, and thinking of them all as a series of novels.. as if Warcraft 1 was book 1, Warcraft 2 was book 2, so on and so forth. Not that they are basing the movie solely on the books themselves.
How do you thnk should play the part of Succubus?

can you imagine this:
Female human warlock with her imp firing great streaming shadowbolts at Neferian and such :D.

if this is going into a movie i think it will be resricted to a plot bases and not a free-for-all player roaming film.
Awesome

I hope they incorperate everything from the game into the movie that would be awesome. I really would like to see the warlock and some of the classes come to the big screen wondering how they would look. hope they spend a lot of time and effort into the movie to make it a great scale epic!!!
Jesus...

Sounds pretty cool. I hope they don't **** it up, but of course that would be a first for Blizzard.
