Omens of War Patch Notes

September 14, 2004 ------------------- Headlines ------------------- Omens of War is live! New Teleportation Spells to Barindu. Just me and my shadooooow! Reflective Water? Register now for the New Orleans Fan Faire. Omens of War -------------------- - Explore the war torn lands of Kuua and reap the benefits of new AAs, spells and items including the new, powerful, Epic 2.0. Lush new areas, filled with beautiful creatures and vibrant, living landscapes await you at every turn. We hope you enjoy all that EverQuest: Omens of War brings to the game. Level 70 -------------------- Earn your way from level 65 to 70 and learn new spells and abilities along the way. Travel to the Omens Zones ------------------- The Priests of Discord in Norrath believe they have been granted a gift. A unique knowledge has been bestowed upon them which they believe was granted as a reward for preaching the way of Discord. That gift, they claim, is the knowledge of a way to a world that is enveloped by Discord itself -- an ethereal poison that wreaks havoc and strife upon all it touches. Speak to a Priest of Discord to learn how to enter the World of Kuua. The Task System ------------------- Only have a short time to play or are you waiting for a group or raid? Immerse yourself in a Task. You can find Task Masters all over Norrath. They can be found in most home cities as well as in places like the East Commonlands, the Butcherblock Mountains, Toxxulia Forest and the Swamp of No Hope. For the more daring individuals, the most challenging tasks can be found by speaking with Task Masters in the Dreadlands and the Overthere. You can open the task window by hitting Alt+Q and start enjoying this new game-play style and enhancement to the EverQuest experience. Be mindful of turning in task items in stacks, as with all quests in EQ, please separate the items before turning them in for a reward. Epic Weapons 2.0 ------------------- Will you be the first of your class to earn these powerful new items? Guild Tribute ------------------- Omens of War expansion brings a new Guild Tribute system. This system will allow guild members to donate items/cash for Tribute points, and allow officers to select benefits that the entire guild will receive, deducting the cost from the guildís tribute pool. Guild Tribute is an extension of the tribute system introduced in Gates of Discord and purchasers of either expansion, will be able to reap the new benefits. Retail Claim Item ------------------- Those of you who purchased the retail version of EverQuest: Omens of War will need to use the /claim command in-game to receive your in-game items. Enjoy! Select your title ------------------- You can hit Shift+T to bring up the new Title selection UI which will allow you to choose from the titles you have earned, through AAs, levels or accomplishments, to be shown with your character name in-game. Voice Macros ------------------- Using Ctrl+V will bring up the new Voice Macro UI. There you will see a list of available voice macros as well as the options of Play, Tell, Group and Raid. Selecting a macro and play will play the macro for you only. Selecting a macro and using one of the other options will send the voice macro to either a tell (using the person you have targeted as the recipient), group or raid. To create your own voice macros, make a sound file using the same name as one of the existing voice macros, which can be found in your EverQuest>Voice>Default directory and place it in your EverQuest>Voice>User directory. You can create hot keys of your favorite Voice Macros by selecting the macro you would like and clicking and holding on the Tell, Raid or Group button until the icon appears on your cursor. We hope you enjoy this new way to immerse yourself into the EverQuest experience. New Spell Slot ------------------- For the first time in EQ, you can open up a new spell slot by learning the Mnemonic Retention AA ability. 9 Spell slots! Wow, Why I remember in the early days of EQ, we only had 8 spell slots and we liked it. We cast spells all day, going uphill both ways. You whippersnappers have it easy =) More Buff Slots ------------------- If you find that you need more room for beneficial buffs on your character, activate the Mystical Attuning AA and open up more room in your buff slot window. Live Changes ------------------- Improved Customization for Graphics ------------------- -There are now 3 sets of options (Spell, Environment, and Actor). All 3 sets have similar options that affect each type of particle. These options allow for more customization when setting up your display and filters. -An "advanced" button has been added under the display tab in the options window. This will allow you to toggle some of the new settings, for our new customizable graphics and effects. You will most likely need to expand the options window to see the new Advanced button. - Shadows; Toggles the new dynamic shadows. - Water Swap*: Switches between old style water, and new reflective water the next time you zone. - 2.X Pixel Shaders: Toggles the use of pixel shaders 2.0. - 1.X Pixel Shaders: Toggles the use of pixel shaders 1.0. - Vertex Shaders: Toggles the use of vertex shaders. - Sky Reflection Type*: Set to Static to use a preset reflection or Dynamic to have the sky reflected on the water. - Dynamic Update Interval: Control the CPU costs of the dynamic reflection by adjusting how often to update the reflection texture. - Dynamic Sky Reflection Size*: Allows you to control how large the reflection texture is. (The * indicates a setting that will take effect next time you zone). - You can now see real time shadows within the world of Norrath. Use the shadows option in options>Display>advanced to turn them off and on. Now, even when soloing, you will never be alone. Those of you with older video cards may have some performance issues when attempting to use shadows. If your machine does not meet the recommended system specifications, we suggest that you play with shadows off. - Enjoy sunsets and moonrises viewed above EverQuest's new reflective water which is available for everyone, wherever there is static water, e.g. Oceans, seas and lakes. You can toggle the new water shaders on and off using the Water Swap button, under options>display>advanced. Zoning Screen ------------------- When zoning, you will now see the loading splash screen. You have not crashed, do not be alarmed. New Improved Particles ------------------- -You will now be affected by the environment around you, be sure to check out these effects especially under water, in frigid weather, dry climates and upon death. Spells ------------------- - Symbol and Aegolism spell lines no longer require reagents. Clerics and Paladins rejoice. - Necromancer pets will no longer require peridots. - The beastlord spell, Tureptan Spirit, now has a healing component. - New transportation spells are available in the Abysmal Sea. Skill Cap Changes ------------------- - Piercing now caps at 250 at level 60 for warriors, rangers and beastlords. - 1h Blunt and 2h Blunt now cap at 250 at level 60 for beastlords. - Druids and Bards that exceeded their tracking skill limits, have had their tracking skill reset to the appropriate value. Items ------------------- - The Timespinner pet will no longer cast spells. - The Dagger of Death has had its AC value reduced. - Some of the new Omens of War items will now display an "Attunable" attribute, which means that they can be traded freely until they become are equipped or augmented. Attunable augments will become no-drop flagged when added to an augment slot, attunable items will become no-drop when equipped. You will not be able to auto-equip an attunable item that has not been attuned to your character. Please be mindful of the new Attunable flag before equipping or augmenting new items. Alternate Advancement Abilities ------------------- - Berserkers have received some new AAs. This should bring their AA selection up to par with comparable melee classes. - Added the ability for shadow knights to train the Gates of Discord ability Improved Theft of Life and the Planes of Power ability Suspended Minion. - The healing wards that priests can summon using their Gates of Discord AAs are now immune to most spells. - Lowered the reuse time on the Magician ability Host of the Elements to 15 minutes. - Added the ability to train Quick Damage to Magicians as a Luclin Class ability. - Increased the critical hit chance for the Wizard Gates of Discord AA Frenzied Devastation. Now the new boxed set of OOW discludd the Ranger epic. Is this because Rangers are useless?? Or were they just forgotten?
Bards and the Nerf
# Sep 16 2004 at 9:02 PM Rating: Default
THANK GOD FOR THIS NERF, Maybe it will knock down the number of stuipid, Jerk, Know-it-all, I'm better than you, snob bards out there. Unfortunately I doubt it.
RE: Bards and the Nerf
# Sep 20 2004 at 10:31 AM Rating: Decent
I find it incredible that Sony can even bother with nerfing a class anymore, just because some other class thinks they have an unfair advantage. When I can no longer walk into PC and see a 65th level shamman PL (or dual boxing) a level 5 warrior.. and then 5 days later see that same war at level 50 and in a major guild, THEN maybe they can try to convince me they need to nerf a class to make things more equal...
Bards getting the shaft
# Sep 16 2004 at 5:15 PM Rating: Decent
Just my 2cp...

Alright, first off, I hear this only affect bards who solo for cash... wrong, it affects any bard who solo's, and to be honest, what's wrong with soloing? Bards are one of the, if not THE most difficult class to master. It's a dangerous job, and it takes skill. Skill should be rewarded. And all of you that laugh... just wait, Sony's piece by peice going to phase out as much kiting as possible, for all classes. It'll happen.
#Anonymous, Posted: Sep 16 2004 at 11:01 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Ok to start this I would like to say my main character is a Cleric. I can use up to 80 peridots with one 3 group raid in a day. During an average weekend of LDoN groups, BoT groups and other misc. activity I can spend 1k sometimes for Peridots. I never sell my Blessings out to the masses like some cheap ***** out for profit. I eat the cost because that is the way of a Healer. The return on my investment of Piety cannot be measured. I will say when I need anything and I do mean anything from any other class at any time of day all I have to do is /ooc and that is true Power. Greedy fools cannot see beyond the cost of the Jem. Greedy, ignorant, children cannot ever see the value in giving, the power in giving nor the rewards gained by giving. I do not fear losing my power, popularity nor status by this new Reagent rule. What I have lost is the power to give something of value to others. What this new rule has done is turned two whole spell lines into something as trivial as a SoW. I know what your thinking but your wrong. It is very rare to see someone hand over everything of value they had on them for a C3,C4,C5,Po9,HoS ect.... I have been given stacks of Misty Thicket Picnic baskets full of wonderful things to sooth the soul. I have been given a Mighty Grub Digger(about 10pp) from one very insistant Iksar Monk while I was passing through Warsilks Woods after I blessed him. Big Cash to a Monk in his teens. But the frendship and mutual respect between a lv 65 Cleric and a lv 17 monk in the age of PowerQuest made my buff and his grub digger priceless. You wont ever get that with a Cool Breeze or Nine trees o hugging:)

I disagree, I think it is cool that it doesn't cost any peridots. No I don't disregard the value the spell once had, I still pay out 20-100plat for V or Temp, About the only ones who won't is the noobs, But That is for the better so the noobs won't stay noobs. But that is my opinion...

I agree whole heartedly, the component cost limited the amount of begging for buffs in theory, with out the component need the begging will be even greater and annoying.
I have an idea, bring back the componnet and require the recipient have the component on them before the caster can cast. Same lessening of burden to the cleric as they intended but still with a high enough cost that the begging for buffs will be at least like before instead of increased.

I really wish they would just put a level 20-25-30 cap on temp. Too often I have to walk through PoK or any newb zone and hear either "can someone spare a temp for a newb?" or "can anyone mega heal me?"(sometimes saying they have temp, other times its just assumed because they are level 5 and needing more than a sit.)
New effects for everyone?
# Sep 16 2004 at 8:17 AM Rating: Decent
Maybe I read the patch message wrong, but for it to say "Live Changes" and then have a list of new graphic updates (like shadows and reflective water) sounds to me like they are for the regular game? But when I logged in last night, there was no "Advanced" button in the Display tab. Is this an Omens of War extra?
RE: New effects for everyone?
# Sep 16 2004 at 11:56 AM Rating: Decent
I find that you need to expand the Display box/window downwards. having said that, I found that shadows considerably slowed my system down. Also it looked very strange that people had shadows but buildings and trees did not!
RE: New effects for everyone?
# Sep 16 2004 at 1:26 PM Rating: Decent
I thought that too (about making the window larger) but it wouldn't let me. Maybe it was just too late and I wasn't trying hard enough. I'll have to try again tonight.

That's kind of lame about the buildings and trees not having shadows. But come to think of it...I don't think FFXI has environment shadows either, just the characters. But it's always had shadows, so maybe I just haven't noticed.
RE: New effects for everyone?

Duh. Here it is.

You will most likely need to expand the options window to see the new Advanced button.

It was late last night. Otherwise I would have seen that line.

The free gift for purchasing the CD was one of four epic weapon Key Chains.

I got the Rogue epic (the guy in the middle on the new splash screen is carrying two of them)

The other epic key chains are Berzerker, Shaman, and one of the wands...iirc.

I've both a high level Cleric and high level Bard. I've noticed after I hit level 65 my bard isnt much fun just kiting around. I dont have a problem with this nerf. Bards were a little outbalanced, they still are very desireable in any group. As far as dots and my Cleric? I didnt care about the dots. Just a minor nuisance.

In that case the people who download the expansion should have to go to a local shop to get the activation code. They skip this inconvenience in exchange for a minor and largely trivial item.

If it means that much to you, go to the store and get the boxed set.

Am I the only one that thinks SOE should stop having these horrific patch days that ***** tons of their customers out of playing time?
You would think months of preparation for these days would subtract some of these issues. Here it is hours later and I still can't get past the server select screen. No official word from these clowns besides the usual we know there is a problem.
This just plain sucks!

Given that this was the OOW release, there was plenty of warning. Also, unless it is an emergency patch, SoE DOES announce them. They post pretty much all of them a couple days ahead of time on their website, and they usually get reposted on other sites like Alla or Casters Realm.

Doubt you are the only one who thinks they shouldn't have these patch days, but you are in the minority. If they didn't have them, game would be 50 times more buggy than it already is, and we would only have the orignial zones to play in.

I understand your point. I am not saying they shouldn't run patches or develop new content. I am saying their beta testing program is for ***** and needs a major overhaul. I am also saying stop ******** with the dx engines and graphics and spend more time developing storylines and new mobs. Just my two cents.

Cant disagree more. In our world today there is absolutely no way a game like EQ can survive unless they also upgrade the technical side of the game - new graphics, better spell effects, environment effects, etc. If the reverse was true we would all still be playing MUDs.

As for beta - I was in beta of OOW myself, and I honestly dont think you were. I found the experience very rewarding, and there was a very honest and good dialogue between players and GMs/Programmers about improving the expansion, and fixing errors.

As a long time GM of roleplaying games, I can vouch that even making a balanced adventure that only works with papers and dice is a major challenge (and still is after 15+ years doing it) - for a company like SOE to make it happen online for thousands of players and under the rules of computers, where I have problems making it work for 6 players and able to bend any rules i like... /hats off for SOE, its an amazing effort.

Oh and I always look forward to patch days - I always see something in them I can use, and they are perfect for working that wife faction that might be hard to get to work on the other days :)

Fair enough.
I still think changing the graphics so much only hurts those on the lower end of the computer spectrum.
There is a place for new graphics better spell effects and so on. I believe they will have to keep up with the ever expanding demands of users. I just happen to believe that place is eq2.
While the experience of beta testing seems to have been a rewarding one for you, there were still tons of users not able to use a product paid for in advance and delayed in order to avoid massive bugs. There were serious issues with Radeon graphics cards that took two days to fix and the server KB was down for over 24 hrs.

I think they could do a better job. They didn't see the Radeon problem coming. Why?
Isn't that what a testing program is for?

I do agree the world they provide is amazing.

I thought it hurts people at the lower end of the spectrum of hardware as well, until this last patch. Now, using the actor clip plane option (available to everyone, not just Omens) you can hugely reduce lag while increasing other visual options.

Our low end computer here is 900mhz, 512mb ram, geforce2 32mb video. That computer now easily runs through PoK and PoTr without major lag, and the normal clip plane out to full, sky complex, and 32 bit color. Massive improvement in visual quality, and less lag than I have ever had. The down side is that mobs and pc's are drawn in closer proximity to you, and you need to increase the actor clip plane again when you start hunting.

Even on a geforce3 system, you can have the new water on with no noticeable change to lag. I was very unhappy with the dx9 engine, but it looks like its finally approaching the quality level were we do see returns, and the returns seem most noticeable on the older systems around here than the newer ones.

I just got to my level 20's, which is the best time to use PBAoE at the Lake of Ill Omen, and now they took the best part of the song away. That pretty much takes away the functionality of the whole line of PBAoE bard damage songs. *Why would they do this?!*

Hey I have a quiz for those who think this patch was unfair. If you awnser YES to any of the questions the we will take back the nerf.

1. Have you ever met a 65 Bard that has said the following.... " Geeze I sure could use some more AA points?"

2. Have you ever met a 65 Bard who had less AA points then you?"

3. Have you ever been in a group that did not groan from the pain and wish death upon a Bard after the swishy Bard said " Ding, ding fellas # 736 AA wee for me."

4. Have you ever seen a 65 Bard beg for cash loot?

5. Did any of your 65 Bard Friends NOT have any saved AA points in his/her bank leading into this last patch?

Scoring:
1 YES = 1 dooby smoked.
2 YES = 4 phat blunts o doom
3 or more YES = YOU ARE A BARD who lives in Florida. Stop trying to steal the Election.

NERF EM ! YAY

IMO - only players who created their bards solely to farm items, etc that no one else can are gonna get upset over this.

I have several high level bard friends, and not one of them mind this change. They play to play in groups anyways, and if they do wanna solo now and then they can just use charming anyways they say.
