Elder Scrolls Online: Ask Us Anything on Crafting

Zenimax answers more community questions on crafting during their AUA.

After the release of a video dedicated to crafting last month, the Zenimax team answered additionnal questions regarding crafting in Elder Scrolls Online during their latest Ask Us Anything session.

Answers cover several points of the crafting process, abilities available, desirability of gear, crafted sets and more!

Crafting Process

  • Every material can be found either in barrels, crates, etc, or can be harvested from the resource nodes you find all over the world (as well as in dungeons)
  • Improving a weapon or armor increases damage done, armor value and any traits built into that item
  • When you craft an armor or weapon, you can pick a refined material and the amount of it to define the level, add a racial style (you know your own race style and can learn more) and add a trait if you know one for the item you want to craft. If you don't know a trait, you can craft without traits.
  • You can replace the enchantment on most items and on all player-crafted items, but some cannot be replaced. Those are marked by a lock icon above the enchantment.

Crafting Abilities and Recipes

  • You can advance in every crafting profession and master all of them (not just two), but skill points are limited and you'll do so at the expense of your combat skills
  • There are no active abilities for crafting but a nice set of passives, like getting a hireling to gather for you or an increased chance to extract better materials
  • Racial style books can be found in desks, cupboards or other places. They can be traded, so ask around and don't forget your fellow guildies.

Crafted Sets

  • All special crafting stations for set pieces can be found in all three alliance territories, in PvE zones of comparable level
  • Most sets have a three-piece requirement, so you can wear two complete sets at a time. Some higher level sets have a five-piece requirement though.

Miscellaneous

  • Crafted gear of the same level and same quality as gear found in the world is almost always better. There is dropped gear with unique enchantments and set bonuses, but a crafter might be able to take that dropped item and make it even better.
  • If you have inventory problems in the wild, you can check the main roads outside towns and villages, where you can find several wandering merchants, or head to a nearby town to find a banker
