WildStar: Crazy Customization

Learn how Carbine's upcoming MMO gives you all the tools you need to be your own unique snowflake.

A Unique Snowflake

In WildStar, there are two types of character customization categories. The types that affects your character's statistics and those that affect the visual appearance of your character.

Since WildStar uses a Limited Action Set (LAS) combat system, players will constantly have the ability to swap in and out skills and abilities to best suit the situation. As seen in many of the WildStar class videos, each class will have two combat roles and a variety of abilities that can serve each role, or both in some cases. These abilities can then be tiered up through the game's "Ability Tiering" system which grants them additional strength and functionality.

On top of this system is the game's "AMP System". AMPs are what one may consider WildStar's take on a talent tree. However, this interface is separated into the six different categories of Assault, Support, Utility, Hybrid, PvP Defense and PvP Offense with each corresponding to a different playstyle. As a player levels up, they will gain Ability Tier points as well as AMP points they can spend to tailor their character's playstyle to their liking.

Next we have a system called "Runecrafting" which allows players to harness the world's primal elements and customize weapons and armor; adding additional stats and bonuses to any piece of gear with an open rune slot. By doing this, a player can tweak a piece of gear they find to be more in-line with their specific combat role.

While being able to change stats on your gear is great, if you're a player who's looking for more of a visual flair, what is there to do for you? Don't worry, WildStar has you covered. Any piece of gear regardless of armor type (Heavy, Medium or Light) can be used as a "costume piece". Costumes in WildStar replace the look of your current equipped gear with the look of your designated costume pieces.

Want to look like a heavy-armored Stalker? Go right ahead. Or if you'd rather look like a light-armored Engineer, then that's okay too. You can even make your character look like they're running around naked – if that's what you're into.

It's also important to keep in mind, though, that costumes won't show up in any PvP Battlegrounds, Arenas or Warplots. All of you hardcore PvPers don't have to worry about being trolled by any Chua running around in their underpants (except in the open world, that is).

Finally, what good would a costume system be if you couldn't change the colors, right? To top it all off, WildStar's dye system allows you to collect and unlock a plethora of dye colors and shades as you travel around Nexus. Any piece of gear can have it's colors changed for a small fee, allowing you to mix-and-match colors, or show off your good fashion sense by coordinating them together.

With WildStar's Spring 2014 launch around the corner, we know one thing for sure: players will be making their way to Nexus in style!

I hope you enjoyed this bit of insight into WildStar's customization options. After reading this, how do you feel about the options WildStar is giving you? Is there anything you're really looking forward to or think is missing? Let me know what you think in the comments below.

I want to thank the folks over at Carbine again for letting me attend this roundtable Q & A session. And as always, for more WildStar information head over to the official website and stay dialed into ZAM for more news and updates.

See you on Nexus!

Does the costume system extend to our weapons or is there another way to change the look of our weapons or are we stuck with whatever is highest stats?

Currently it just includes armor. I'm with you in hoping they include weapons at some point, but I haven't heard anything so far. If I do et any new information regarding that I'll be sure to post an update.
