Sony Online Entertainment's MMOFPS celebrates its first anniversary.
One year ago today, Sony Online Entertainment launched its critically acclaimed free-to-play massively multiplayer online first-person shooter, PlanetSide 2. Since then, more than 6 million players worldwide have enlisted to join one of the three Empires -- Terran Republic, Vanu Sovereignty or New Conglomerate -- to take part in the epic battles that span the planet of Auraxis.
PlanetSide 2 has evolved over the year, regularly receiving major updates and new game features, most recently a game enhancing performance update, Operation: Make Faster Game, which has increased performance upwards of 30 percent. The development team plans to continue to fuel the Auraxian War for years to come, with forthcoming content to include the release of Hossin, a new swamp-filled continent and Nexus, the first of three Battle Islands. In 2014, gamers will be able to experience PlanetSide 2's free-to-play massive battles on a next-gen console when the MMOFPS launches on the recently released PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system.
"We knew we had something special when we launched PlanetSide 2. Massive air, vehicle, and infantry battles, gorgeous graphics, adrenaline action and a vibrant community -- it has it all and there is nothing else like it," said Matt Higby, Creative Director of PlanetSide 2 at Sony Online Entertainment. "We are very proud of what we've accomplished this past year. The successes we've experienced worldwide prove we have a winning formula with PlanetSide 2 on PC, and we can't wait to see how the game and community will grow when we launch it on the PlayStation 4 next year."
Over the course of the year, SOE has been on an ambitious path to expand the game's conventional and geographical boundaries. PlanetSide 2 became the first video game to feature the ability to stream gameplay directly to the Twitch platform with a single click, and through a partnership with Major League Gaming, the free-to-play title began its journey in the competitive gaming scene. Sony Online Entertainment also developed strategic international partnerships, spreading PlanetSide 2 across the globe to new audiences in Europe, Russia, South Korea, China and Brazil.
Since launch, PlanetSide 2 has seen:
- More than 6 millions registrations worldwide
- Nearly 10 million base flips
- More than 80 million hours spent in game
- Almost 93 billion shots fired
- More than 878 million kills
To commemorate the one-year anniversary, through Sunday, November 24 SOE will sell a one-year anniversary bundle for $39.99 USD, which includes special anniversary camos, weapons, decals and a six-month heroic boost.
