World of Warplanes Released

Take to the skies in Wargaming's newest free-to-play war MMO.

Wargaming, the same folks that brought us the ubiquitous World of Tanks, has released the second of their "World of" trio with World of Warplanes. This is the perfect game for those of you thinking "Gee, World of Tanks is neat, but I wish these tanks could fly!"

Over four million players helped test World of Warplanes, blasting each other apart in thousands of 15-vs-15 dogfights in the name of science. There are three main classes—Fighter, Heavy Fighter and Attack Aircraft—each with a specialized role to suit your objective or playstyle. The game features approximately 100 plane variations, and all of them have loads of customizable components. From someone who hasn't yet played the game, these figures seem like a very satisfying starting point.

Now that the game is available, it's only reasonable to consider the competition: War Thunder from Gaijin Entertainment. Although technically War Thunder is only in open beta testing, it's a free-to-play game of the same ilk. Our advice? Play both!

Played this in beta and honestly I think I prefer War Thunder.

Yeah, I suspect I'd feel the same way. I've played Star Conflict (from the devs of War Thunder) and it was very well-made. That said, World of Tanks does have a ton of players, so I'm sure World of Warplanes is still a solid title.

Oh no doubt. I actually didn't think it was poor at all. In fact, I may give it another go coming up here... If I can find the time :p
