Final Fantasy XIV Announces New Content at TGS

PvP, housing and more to be included in A Realm Reborn's first content update

It's been almost a month since Square Enix relaunched their second MMO, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. While many of us are still making our way through the story and towards level 50, other players are already there and looking for more content. We've heard some discussion about the 2.1 update prior to launch, but recently at the Tokyo Game Show, producer Naoki Yoshida gave everyone a quick look at what we have to look forward to with ARR's first major update.

For those level-capped players looking for new instances to run, there will be several new dungeons in the 2.1 update. Among these new instances is ARR's newest raid, the Crystal Tower. This will be a 24-player dungeon and, according to Yoshida, will not be overly tuned to the point of losing a few players is a guaranteed wipe.

If dungeons and raiding aren't your thing, or you've been itching to fight something a little more unpredictable than scripted NPCs, the 2.1 update will also bring a new PvP arena feature to ARR. In the Wolves' Den, two teams of four players will face off against one another for battle and glory.

The other major feature of the 2.1 update is a bit less combat-focused: Player Housing. All three city-states in Eorzea will be available for prospective homeowners with about 380 different parts to make your house stand out from everyone else's.

Yoshida also hinted at a few other features from the 2.1 update:

  • Treasure hunting (no real info other than it's finding treasure and can be done solo or in a group)
  • Hard mode against a special foe (they're keeping the monster's identity a secret for now)
  • Daily primal quests
  • Content Finder - Random Matching (Various content with random match-ups. Will give tokens for equipment.)
  • Beauty Parlor (change your hairstyle)

As we get closer to the release of Final Fantasy XIV's first major content update and more details come out about the various systems, ZAM will be sure to keep you all informed on what changes are coming to Eorzea. Personally, I'm really looking forward to player housing. Some for the whole "decorating my own place" thing, but mostly because of the rumors I heard during beta about Free Company housing giving bonus gathering XP and other bonuses. Anything that makes leveling the five classes I keep bouncing between go faster sounds awesome.
