Player Jailed for Bad Joke

As League of Legends player awaits trial for off-color comments, his mother speaks

Anger and frustration are certainly emotions that all gamers have felt after an intense play session. Not many of us would make the kind of joke Justin Carter did after a League of Legends match, but no one could have expected the response that followed.

Carter, a 19 year old--though 18 at the time--from New Braunfels, Texas, was engaged in an argument on Facebook when he was accused of being "crazy." He responded to the effect of "Oh yeah, I'm so messed up in the head, I'm going to go shoot up a school full of kids and eat their still, beating hearts." Justin then stated that his comments were meant to be taken as a sarcastic joke.

A woman in Canada, who came across the post, didn't see the funny side of the comments. After researching Carter's personal details--and believing he lived near an elementary school--she reported him to the local police.

Carter has been languishing in prison since February after being charged with making "terroristic threats."

In an exclusive interview, Michael Byrne of FreetoPlay.tv spoke to Jennifer Carter, Justin's mother, who explained the traumatic ordeal that her son continues to endure:

"He’s had a pretty rough time in jail. He’s never been in any kind of trouble before and hes not really familiar with the criminal world. Yeah, so he’s been transferred quite a few times after being assaulted in jail. They keep switching him from unit to unit and apparently, after the last time he was assaulted, the guards were concerned that he would try and kill himself and they placed him in solitary for his own protection."

Carter's hearing is on Monday, July 1; he is currently being held under federal felony terrorism charges.

According to his mother, neither Justin or his family had firearms in their possession when their homes were searched by police officers.

As a father and former teacher, I understand completely the fear and strength of emotions surrounding any threats towards children--particularly those in the manner that Carter made. However, those comments currently see a 19 year old, who appeared to make a poor choice in humor, facing a legal system pressing for his imprisonment for a minimum of eight years.

Jennifer Carter has begun a petition to raise awareness of her son's plight, which you can sign here.

This is pretty awful and my heart goes out to him and his family - but at the end of the day people need to learn that actions have consequences and a lot of kids think they can say what they like online without consequence or comeback - this is a wake up call perhaps to all those trash talkers who take things too far - having said that I think this statement was clearly meant to be sarcastic, but then the subject is a fraught one and even if sarcasm was the intent it was in very poor taste ...
damn canadians...

Good looking out for America, Canada... but the gaming world is way different. If I read it correctly... he says the school shooting thing as a way of saying people are crazy if they do that, not that he was actually gunna do it or thinking about it. So now we have a kid that will probably do something crazy later on in his life b/c police/cia/government cant tell the difference from real talking and trash talking.

Even if you were to consider taking this for real... then arrest all the comedians that say their jokes about the school shootings cuz they are obvious crazy to joke about something so serious.
Utterly ridiculous

This is completely absurd! A gamer makes a clearly sarcastic comment, and gets arrested! He's a gamer, with no record of any criminal activity, as stated, and in no possession of weapons (guns). Who in their right minds would consider that comment a threat? He is 19 years old, has been transferred to multiple prisons because of multiple assaults on him, and was even considering taking his own life, all because some overly sensitive ***** in Canada -not even the same country he lives in- was offended by his remark towards a fellow gamer? He was obviously seeing red at the time and not thinking about the possibility of some random ***** reading his comments and taking them out of context (bear with me, I'm sure you all know what i mean by this). Justice has not prevailed. If he has to serve the eight years sentenced to him, I will have once again lost all faith in humanity. If he does have to, Justice will not have been served.

to the guy above me, although i agree with you, he said these things on facebook. And seing as how someone from my country was able to read what he said, he obviously didn't have his prefile settings set to what they should be, so anyone can see it. People don't seem to understand social networks can be hazerdous to themselves.

Now, I don't think what he said was right, but what hes facing is extremely rediculous. Theres no proof he was planning to shoot up a school, except for that one post. He is basically being charged for a crime he didn't commit, and wasn't going to. if just saying something can get me put away for 8 years this world is $*%&ed.

Yea Keysofgaruda I was thinking the same thing about the privacy settings. He was pretty foolish to not have set them better. Oh, and I just noticed some of my grammar was off and I typed some stuff incorrectly, but that was my first comment on this website (I really couldn't resist speaking my mind over this article) so I have no idea how to go back and edit my post haha but I think people get what I was saying.

Edit: Just found out how to edit it hah.
