Camelot Unchained: Lifting the Veil

Find out what lurks beyond the Veil in this CU lore update

The Beginning

In tonight's evening update of Camelot Unchained, Mark Jacobs, Founder of City State Entertainment, tells a tale about the story behind CU.

The story begins several hundred years before the beginning of Camelot Unchained. For an unknown reason and by an anonymous being, the Veil was pierced. This event brought about an apocalyptic level of destruction. To fully understand what happened you have to first understand the Veil. The Veil is more than just a barrier between dimensions, the Veil is also a living being.

When the Veil was pierced it reacted violently, this reaction is now referred to as the "Veil Storm." These storms are more than just physical storms, although they are accompanied by lightning, wind and rain, they also bring with them a high level of other-worldly magic. This magic can destroy anything it touches, but even worse it has the power to change anything at its heart's content. Unknowning adventurers and townsfolk that were caught in these storms were either decimated or turned into horrible abominations.

Mark Jacobs describes it as a zombie-apocalypse; except the zombies are on steroids, and they're not zombies. Instead of zombies you have demons, vampires, werewolves and nightmarish beasts created by the imagination of the Veil itself. Not all people were turned into mindless killing machines, some retained their humanity and were forced to live a life trapped in a body that is not their own.

Beings from the other side of the Veil, known only as the Emissaries, came as quickly as they could. By the time they got there most of the world had already been destroyed or infested by hellish creatures. Using their knowledge of the Veil and their strange magic they created areas for the survivors to live in peace, these areas were and are protected by things called "Stabilizers."

Before the Emissaries left they gave the survivors two blessings, immortatily and the three swords.

The Three Swords

The blessing of immortality gave hope to the ravaged survivors. Without fear of death they were free to pick up the pieces of their dying races and become a strong people once again.

But the blessing of immortality was nothing compared to that of the three swords. Each sword represented one of the Emissaries. And in true Camelot fashion these swords were lodged deep into an anvil, awaiting the day when the right person would come along and tear them from their resting place.

Just as things were becoming dark again and all seemed lost, in perfect cliched fashion, three brothers were able to claim these powerful relics for themselves. With the swords' power and without fear of death the brothers were able to drive back the madness and collect followers along the way. As tales of their deeds grew, more and more people flocked to them until eventually each brother had an army to call his own.

This time of peace did not last forever, as the brothers grew their personalities and goals changed, and their bodies with them. One brother wanted the world to follow a tight regime and believed in the power of technology. His sword turned him into King Arthur, the brother's hero and a man he idolized.

The second brother felt no fear and led his forces barreling into the chaos of the Veil Storms, his sword recognized his urge to conquer and so he became strong and tall like the vikings of olde.

The final brother felt that the natural order was to be respected and wished to return the world to its original form. His sword granted him his wish and changed him into a Tuatha De Dannan.

The New World

With their power and armies the brothers waged war against themselves and the world around them until they eventually parted ways. The Arthurians went to the south and Arthur raised surrounding mountains to create a protective shell for his people to build. Arthur stayed peacefully in his southern home and was the most successful of his brothers in these early stages.

In true viking fashion, the second brother took his people north and, seeing Arthur's success, created his own safehaven of mountains. The viking's city rested near the sea and its people set sail to find new land to conquer and call their own. What they found was merely scarred remains of a once vibrant world, forever changed by the magic of the Veil.

The third brother led his followers far to the east. Lacking the protection of mountains the journey was difficult at first, until the sword bearer called upon the earth and nature to raise up monstrous trees all around them. These trees were able to withstand the power of the Veil and keep the storms at bay. The third brother was able to make the east his home.

And so Your Story Begins

This is where you will begin as a player of Camelot Unchained. You will choose your realm (Mark Jacobs would really want me to express that none of the realms are evil) and set out into the untamed world to create your own story.

In CU you make your own story; you set out into the wilderness and claim land for your side. On that land you can build a home for yourself, or a fortress to slow the advancement of enemy forces. CU is going to be what you, the player, makes it.

If you're interested in Camelot Unchained, head over to their Kickstarter page where you can watch Mark Jacobs tell the tale I just recited to you, in his own words. After all, if you want to experience the story for yourself in-game, a successful Kickstarter might be the only chance you get.
