Cataclysm Beta: Portals gone from Dalaran / Shatt.

Gone are the days of winging it to Dalaran or Shattrath to take advantage of the portals connected to every major city in Azeroth!

UPDATE: Zarhym addressed the portal removal in the official forums. It looks like class trainers and Auctioneers will be added in Dalaran and Shattrath! You can read the post after the jump.

According to a news post by WoW Insider, it seems as though the portals in Dalaran and Shattrath that lead to the major cities in Azeroth have been replaced by class trainers in the Cataclysm beta. In other words, if you want to pop between Ironforge, Stormwind and Darnassus (just kidding, who goes to Darnassus) quickly, you're going to need to find an alternate route. Obviously, with the entire remake of Azeroth come Cataclysm, it seems as though Blizzard really wants to usher their playerbase back into their home land, so it makes sense to take away some of the comforts that made Dalaran and Shattrath such fantastic home cities.

They do note, however, that with Cataclysm will come some more convenient methods of travel, like Deepholm (a new zone) having portals to Stormwind and Ogrimmar, and vice versa. We'll just have to wait and see what comes next in Cataclysm!

Zarhym's response on the official forums:

The reason the portals from Shattrath were not removed from Outland when Wrath of the Lich King released is that there was a new central hub with portals to all major cities in Northrend. There is no longer a neutral city hub which both factions will be using in Cataclysm. We want to ensure visiting the major faction capitals is still the most attractive thing to do in Cataclysm, rather than having people use Shattrath and Dalaran as easy connector hubs.

To make up for this, we'd like to add class trainers and Auctioneers in Shattrath and Dalaran for those leveling through The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King content.

They're doing this because they want people to be in the home cities more? Most players DO spend most of their time in the home cities ... because there are banks, auction houses, and trainers. What's the point of adding the trainers and auction houses to Dal and Shatt if that's what they want? The higher level users who can go there will just go there instead of the home cities to train and bank / auction, won't they? It would be easier to just stay in outland as a level 60-70 instead of having to travel all the way back to their home city, so either way, they're not going to be going back to a major city any more frequently than they already had been. It just seems like a big waste of time, for both the players and the developers, and the portals will most likely be back in a month or two. :/
City raids will be easier

I'm sure the Alliance will like that.

It does appear Blizzard has given up on attracting new players and is now focused on time-sinking current subscribers. At least for awhile. I wonder if all the Cat content is finished? I bet the portals reappear in 5 to 6 months.

BIG MISTAKE

Azeroth has become too big and they need more portals not less. I hate spending 10-15 mins of playtime riding a bird to get from point a to point b. Put mages in beside the birds and make it faction based with quests and dailys. The higher your faction with the mages the more places they will port you to, for a fee of course :)
Idea

Goblin teleporters!

Instead of physically walking through a portal..the portal explodes and with PRECISE mathmatics and vectoring, you will land in a crater precisely outside your destination, give or take a few hundred yards...

This is a bad idea. Dalaran will be just as dead as Shat is now no matter if the portals are there or not, so what's the point? Might as well make it convenient for non mages.

i doubt dalaran would be as dead as shatt because people went to dalaran because there were still portals there, however if dalaran/shatt are the only major cities with portals then they wont get moved on from. its that simple
OOh that sucks!

more than likely, the portal area will be in a region where you can't get to as a low-level player, even via Mage portal. And I'm sure they will find a way to limit any summoning abilities, as well.

Might be a way for Blizzard of reducing lag in higher-level areas by reducing the number of low-level players there? /shrug
