Icecrown Citadel cleared with blue-quality gear.

The guild "Undergeared" demonstrates what is possible with lower quality armor.

For those who may not know Gevlon, creator of the Greedy Goblin blog, has taken on the challenge of trying to clear as much WotLK raid content in possible while only wearing blue (rare) armor, with minor exceptions. His guild “Undergeared” of EU-Arathor spent much of the spring and summer clearing content despite the self-imposed handicap.

However as the summer has dragged on the group has fizzled somewhat, as many guilds do. They are planning one last attempt to clear some additional content this coming week, but other than that it appears this great experiment is coming to a close.

So what is the end result? The guild ended up clearing a large portion of the game’s 10-man content. Barring some additional success in the coming week; the group ended up clearing 8 out of the 12 bosses in Icecrown Citadel, including the first wing, plus Rotface, Festergut, Valithria Dreamwalker and Blood Princes. All of Trial of the Crusader and Naxxramas encounters were cleared, and all but two bosses in Ulduar (Yogg-Saron and Assembly of Iron). In addition they also cleared all of the 5-man heroic content.

Interestingly enough the group found the Trial of the Crusader (ToC) raid to be easier than Ulduar wearing the same gear, despite the fact that ToC was released later in the expansion. Whether or not they clear any additional content, the guild went a long way toward showing what a sufficiently skilled group can accomplish; kudos to them.

i think the ultimate point here is, ( aside from that guild/guild leader being -that bored- to try to do this ) is that there are a lot of stupid nublet players in the game that can't handle mechanics. there are so many things ( boss mechanics, in this case ) that are spelled out to you that if you can't get them on the first or second go, then either your making an honest mistake, or your just plain stupid. i agree whole heartedly with pigtails of doom, that this just plainly shows that the game isn't as hard as a lot of people want to make it out to be. these guys have proven that grabbing up all that gear and strutting your e-peen around all over the place isn't all that its cracked up to be. and even -if- they used the buff, whatever, their still in blues! no matter what some people want to say about the quality of that gear or how much hp/stats/whateverscore that gear has, its still -much- lower then whats 'intended' for that teir of instance. I seriously hope that blizz takes this to heart, and players too for that matter, that handing out ( and badging up ) gear doesn't necesarily make you better, i think you can go pug up something in LFG to certainly prove that.
misleading title

The title is a bit misleading, the group did not clear ICC, they killed 8/12 bosses. Clearing would indicate that they at least killed Lich King on normal difficulty.

They did a fantastic job, don't get me wrong, but 8/12 != cleared.
That's awesome!

Yet another nail in the coffin for the argument that skill > gear.
#REDACTED, Posted: Aug 22 2010 at 5:24 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Shouldn't that be "Gear > Skill"?
That's awesome!

"My Frost DPS DK does about 5k (top 5 dps) in 10man ICC"

10-man is generally 2 tanks, 3 healers, 5 DPS.

Top five, out of five, isn't very impressive, sorry to say.

Though, honestly, I get your point. I've been on a my poorly-geared rogue alt and out-done people in 5600 gear. But that was in a PUG, and they sucked. No way in hell could that alt compare to the 11,000 DPS of the people in the guild I ran with normally.
That's awesome!

Uh, no... Skill > Gear means that skill is more important than gear. Sure, some people are coaxed to raids for the shinies, but not everyone. I will admit that's part of why I like raiding, but most of it is the fun of the challenge and experiencing new things, as well as getting to see some lore in action.

Also, it says right in the title that the raid group was wearing blue gear, not T9. That means item level 200 blues. With or without the buff, I'd say that's pretty impressive.

#REDACTED, Posted: Aug 23 2010 at 1:46 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Still think you meant "Gear > Skill" (in a 'poke-fun-of'-form). Because the general consensus is "Gear > Skill". Whereas, assuming they did this without a ICC Buff, would be "Skill > Gear".
That's awesome!

No, I know what the hell I meant. Quit correcting me. My comment was in regards to people who refuse to take players to ICC with less than a certain gear score, as well as people who struggle in ICC in T9 and don't go anywhere. Gear helps yes, no one is denying that.

Obviously I need to spell things out for you since you can't seem to comprehend a simple statement like Skill > Gear. If a group in all blue gear can down 8/12 bosses in regular ICC and there are people who can't do the same in T9 emblem gear, then obviously Skill > Gear. If you're a dumb *** and can't move out of fire or AoE spells, or can't follow simple directions that the RL gives you, it doesn't matter how good your gear is, you will die and possibly cause a wipe.
That's awesome!

Yes, but "Another nail in the coffin of" means "This finally disproves", rather than "This finally proves". You may know what you meant, but we all know what you said, see?
That's awesome!

Actually I changed my mind. I looked it up, and my usage was correct.

The particular idiom I used means "an action that will cause something to end," hence, my usage of saying that this event was the final nail in the coffin of the argument that skill > gear is actually correct.

Noobs. Only people with a 5K+/3K+ gearscore can do ICC. They're just being carried. Just ask Trade!

Sarcasm aside... Noice job.
