Upcoming Mount Changes in 3.2

Zarhym just posted an extensive change list to how the mount system will be changed in the upcoming 3.2 patch. It consists of moving level requirements of the different riding skills and costs. You can find out more info about it after the jump.

Originially posted by Zarhym here:

In the next major content patch, we intend to adjust mount requirements to further improve the leveling experience in World of Warcraft. In addition, cast times for summoning all mounts will be reduced to 1.5 seconds, down from 3 seconds. The following is a breakdown of the upcoming cost and level requirement changes we are making for each riding skill.

  • Apprentice Riding (Skill 75)

    • 60% land mount speed
    • Requires level 20
    • Cost: 4 gold
    • Mount cost: 1 gold
    • Mail will be sent to players at level 20 guiding them to the riding trainer

  • Journeyman Riding (Skill 150)

    • 100% land mount speed
    • Requires level 40
    • Cost: 50 gold
    • Mount cost: 10 gold
    • Mail will be sent to players at level 40 guiding them back to the riding trainer

  • Expert Riding (Skill 225)

    • 150% flying mount speed; 60% land mount speed
    • Requires level 60
    • Cost: 600 gold (faction discounts now apply)
    • Mount Cost: 50 gold
    • Can now be learned in Honor Hold (Alliance) or Thrallmar (Horde)

  • Artisan Riding (Skill 300)

    • 280% flying mount speed; 100% land mount speed
    • Requires level 70
    • Cost: 5,000 gold (faction discounts now apply)
    • Mount Cost: 100 gold

Expect more of stuff like this. It is the life cycle of an MMO, they are making WoW easier just like the major dumbing down of EQ.
Terrible.

I was considering resubscribing and downloading the 3.1 patch (I quit pre-Ulduar) but this announcement has diminished all chance of that, mounts are way too easy to get now and flight at 60?

The only decent thing i see here is the increase to normal flight mount speed, it needed to be increased a little bit.
Hmmm...
# Jun 11 2009 at 10:50 AM Rating: Decent
So let me get this straight, the Journeyman riding skill gets you 100% speed (skill 150). The expert riding skill get you flying at 150% speed, but drops your riding back to 60% speed. So, at 70 when we head to Northrend if we have purchased expert riding, we will basically be relegated back to 60% riding speed until we hit level 77 when we can purchase cold weather flying. So, whats the point of buying flying in the Outlands when it will drastically hamper one's ability to level in Northrend?
Hmmm...

You are not reading it correctly. Your flying mount will fly at 150% but will run on the ground at 60% speed. Why run on the ground when you can fly at more than twice the speed? You always will have your normal land mount that will still run at 100% speed but again why when you can fly at 150%? They won't change anything on your land mounts, the speeds are talking about the specific mounts you can get with each new skill level.

Even if you are correct it needs to be worded differently, I can understand how they are mixing that up, the way you read it.

Land mount =/= Flying mount

A flying mounts land speed is different than a land mounts land speed, well because it only can go on land, so it's pretty confusing...

Now why in the world would they make your flying mount run on the ground at 60/100% whats the use in that, your not going to run on the ground with a flying mount so why not just keep it at 100%? That just makes no sense to me, they aren't really hindering anyone with making that 60% so i don't get it.
Great News!

This is great! And this is coming from someone who has already paid for 4 epic flyers. Looks like Blizzard has been reinvesting the money spent on buying them into breeding new mounts and now have an overstock! All mounts must go!! Get yours now before stock runs out.

Gold is easy enough to come by. I don't play a lot, but I was still able to buy 4 epic flyers. I don't regret spending the money on them and will never complain about it because I earned that money for that reason only. Just like if you were to save up 1k gold for an item on the AH and then after you buy it someone decides to sell the same item for 400 gold. You were ok with the 1k price when you bought it so why should anything change when a cheaper price point comes along?

This is great IMO. Still leaving epic fliers as a treat for people who want to sink the gold into it but also making it alot more bearable for those of us with the normal flier.

I love how people are ******** about losing gold when probably most of these people are the ones giving these "helpful tips" on how to make gold when someone asks about it. Boohoo, so you had a spend a few hundred more gold, so what, you planned for it back then didn't you? It's not like you really lost anything, there is no reason you should be compensated because you had to spend the money now.

Go and buy a computer and watch 2 months later a new one come out being $200 cheaper and 2x better than the one you just bought, they aren't going to give you your money back just because something came out a little bit later, it happens, get over it, enjoy it now that mounts are cheaper and easier.

I feel the prices for apprentice and journeyman are too low, 35g to 4g and 600g down to 50g, that's a HUGE jump, maybe like 20g with a 5g mount and 200g with a 50g mount cost. I'm really glad they didn't lower artisan. Having to save up for mounts was probably a decent gold sink, not anymore, I think this could have an effect on the economy with more players having a bit more gold now, at least newer players.

I am going to hold off on my paladin alt till the patch comes out. I love and hate the changes. I love them because its about damn time they increased the basic flight speeds, but considering since I bought the riding skills to hit 300 on my old hunter which was at the the tune of almost 7000g, and then basic/epic flight for my dk (granted wasn't as much, but I had to farm it all) you can say that I am a bit torqued about this, but its all a game anyways and blizzard is doing this to catch newer players and keep the older ones by making more appealing to roll alts.
Is going to adapt, as usual.

I personally am quite happy about that.

While I have a level 80 (and a level 78) I have enough Alts that will be happy about the upcoming changes. Even happier than I had been at the more recent change of dropping the Apprentice Riding Skill from 40 to 30.

*winces*

Okay, apparently I just started playing at the wrong time, because I only started a couple of months ago and have a 70 and a 30. Meaning in the past (less than!) two months, I've worked hard enough to earn, and subsequently spend:

nearly 100g on main's Apprentice skill + 10g on level 30 mount
nearly 1,000g on main's Journeyman skill + 100g on level 60 mount
1,000g on main's Expert skill (fortunately I Tailored my own flier, at least)
nearly 100g on alt's Apprentice skill + 10g on her level 30 mount

You're telling me that, for what I paid 2,220g for LESS THAN TWO MONTHS AGO, newbies can now get for a total of 720g? 670g if they make their own flier like I did??

And do you know how long it took to get a MAGE to 30 having to hoof it everywhere, without Aspect of the Cheetah or Spirit Wolf form or any of those other speed increases that every other class gets?!

ARGH!!!

Sorrty guys, hate to be a Whiny McWhinus, but I am really feeling this blow because I spent so much gold and effort SO recently. And I want compensation. Oh, I know I won't *get* compensation because Blizzard will effectively tell us grumpers to kiss our own bottoms, but for the record, it'd be a nice gesture.

*mutters darkly*

Every other class besides mages get speed increase abilities? Yeah right. I think that most classes do not have a speed increasing ability. My main (Warrior) doesn't have a speed increasing ability either and I had to get him to lvl 40 before I got the benefit of a mount so stop complaining. People that have been playing longer then you have had more hurt over this then you have.

Questions....

Will this change the 'Lock and Pally mount quests? Will they then become scaled to their new corresponding levels?

Will this change manufactured mounts, the flying machine, the bikes, the carpets, will their requirements/ingredients/skill levels be changed?
Existing mounts
# Jun 11 2009 at 5:50 AM Rating: Decent
they have already changed that....a few patches ago. Last year I think, they made it to where you can buy the riding skill and mount from the trainer. The only reason I know is because I was at the last part of the lock epic mount quest and had scheduled to head into dire maul with a friend of mine when the patch hit....I was so pissed. But hey, I went through all of that trouble of getting all of the reagents I needed. But hey, I just hit the 70 I needed for my flyer so I guess I will be getting my epic kinda early.

I don't think much of this has as much all to do with the casual player. Imo
it has a lot more to do with the NEW player. It is a recognition that;

1) Vanilla WoW is becoming more and more deserted since LK. Leveling there is
a pita so lets shorten the process even more, and
2) the 30% reduction in xp for 1-70 has resulted in new players being severely
disadvantaged in acquiring mounts.

If nothing had ever been changed the grind to level a character for the new
player would get more and more a pain with every expansion. So with this
x-pac they made the first accommodation, reduced xp. And they screwed it
up. The new player usually arrived at 60 and 70 much faster and poorer than
I did. There are 2 exceptions afaik.

a) Recipients of aid from friends. (not who blizz is worried about)
b) Dual gatherers.

This is simply an attempt to fix part of the poverty problem.

OK.. How about all of us that had to WORK HARD to get those mounts and pay on hell of a lot of gold for those mounts?? Maybe Bliz should give ALL players that have their mounts a cash back program for the gold they have now wasted that could have been better spent on gear?

How about finalizing the damned Riding Crop situation?

We still have to wait until lvl 69 to get it, and then if you're dumb enough to buy one you get to use it for all of ONE level before it becomes worthless.

To add insult to injury - after ******** us over with this and promising that a new system was in the works, Bliz recently admitted that they really hadn't done anything towards working on a new system yet.

Does that mean my 60 mage gets flying or has to pay several hundred gold again?

Maybe I will be 70 by the time the patch hits..neeed to make more money though.
Spending what I had gathered earlier sucks, but...flying soon :o

Cold Weather flying?
# Jun 11 2009 at 1:34 AM Rating: Decent
I suppose that makes some sense, as it forces players to do some traveling by land around Northrend before just flying over everything. Still, it will be quite a drop off to go from 150% flying speed in Outland (for 10 whole levels) and then have to go back to 100% land speed.
Please, wake up....
# Jun 10 2009 at 7:40 PM Rating: Default
This is a pure and simple one liner, folks. It has nothing to do with getting places, nor does it have to do with making one more anything than a DK. This is a statement from blizZ, "Roll up a new t00n and stay in the game, we need the revenue". Natural progression of MMORPGs

I'm not sure all the changes were absolutely necessary, but the one many of us hoped for most isn't there . . . lowering the cost of the artisan skill down a bit from 5k. Yes, I know that making money in Northrend is ridiculously easy, but when you have multiple 70+ characters, it is still a huge strain on the coin purse to get all of them their fast fliers, not to mention the Cold Weather flying tacked on top.
Good, but could have been better

The cost should go down as they say "Cost: 5,000 gold (faction discounts now apply)" so the cost should drop by up to 20%.

About time!!!

Specifically

"150% flying mount speed; 60% land mount speed "

The basic flier will now FINALLY be faster than a basic ground mount. Come on now. It was always idiotically slow. I always wondered how the gryphon could actually remain airborne at that speed.

Also basic riding at 20...needed. Long time needed. Lets face it. Realistically, you'd pick up your own mount once you started crossing massive distances. And at level 20 you start branching out and traveling the world. The mount is more of a necessity in my opinion.

Last but not least epic at 40 is a bit much for me...I would hope 50. But at least its in time to hopefully balance out the utterly ridiculous advantage of DKs in 50 bracket pvp. Now with a bit of money you can dance toe to toe.

Well there goes the incentive for most people to save up for epic flying with regular flying closing the gap. Another change to suit lazy players.

Practically anything winged is going to go faster than something walking. 60% is ridiculously slow. It has nothing to do with lazy and everything to do with making no stinking sense whatsoever to have a massive winged bird/lion flying at the speed of an elephant (elekk).

You should in theory be able to comfortably move around with basic flying. There is no reason something that costs substantially more than your epic ground should go as slow as your cheap basic flier. Tell me where in fantasy do you see your hero jumping onto the back of a dragon to get over a mountain then landing going "sorry you're too slow" and summoning his magical horse to continue.

If you spent the money for basic flying you should be able to fly faster than your starter mount.

And yes, actually, many of us will dismount to our epic ground when there aren't heavy terrain obstacles. Its usually faster than staying on your pokie joe mount. 40% faster is a big upgrade except in areas of huge terrain differences (like storm peaks).

The 60% flight speed never really bothered me, it was meant to be able to get places that you could not get to on a land mount.
The part that I always hated and is not being changed, is the ground speed portion. I think it should have been 60% flying 100% ground for regular flying mount, and 280%flying 100% ground for epic flying. You hop on your slow flyer to get somewhere, then you have to dismount and get on a seperate ground mount to be able to go 100% never made sense to me.

# Jun 11 2009 at 9:49 PM Rating: Default
Although 60% flying and 100% ground sounds good to me, I think the only issue I'd have with that would be in Icecrown/Storm Peaks where land is almost useless and flight is pretty much mandatory. I hated flying on a 60%er in those areas as it really takes too long. If it was the Outland Content, 60 flying and 100% ground wouldn't be a bad deal. But Northrend? A player like me would vote for the additional flight speed.

There's no point in complaining about the 60% ground on Expert flying either as someone mentioned before. If you're on a map where you can fly, you're not gonna choose your epic ground over your flyer, now are you?

QFT. Your gold is gone, a product of the past. Move on because it won't come back til you make more in the MMO world. It's like everyone's so content and proud that they did what they have to get what they want that they didn't read the part in the game that says "content is subject to change anytime." And it has to because it's business that offers pleasure that will unintentionally compromise someone.

i dont quite get why so many people seem to think that this is stupid about normal flier running at 60% speed i mean they arent exactly designed to run are they? not only that but they wanted to add another reason to buy the epic flying mount why should they have been able to run faster than they could fly? that makes no sense whatsoever however flying is generally considered faster than running (if you dont think so compare a hawks speed to a horses or something like that) so the change to 150% flying 60% run does make sense
Excellent!
