DDoS Attack

We are still under periodic distributed denial of service attack (DDOS).

While the engineering team here at zam.com is working around the clock to mitigate and prevent future attacks, at times our systems are simply overwhelmed. Recently, a bandwidth flood of over 3Gig/sec traffic caused our ISP to take our network offline. We're continuing to work with our ISP to find permanent scaleable solutions to this problem.

We apologize for the interruption in service caused by this, and are working with law enforcement to track down the origin of the attack.

someone must realy be pissed off at you. What sort of major things has the site done recently? I mean, if the whole controversy of being owned by the same company that used to own IGE wasnt enough to make someone DDoS the site, then you must have done SOMETHING to **** SOMEONE off a whole lot. perhaps it was the account hackers pissed off that their efforts were stopped or something. Becuase that is pretty much my only theory as to who would have motive to do it.

It most likely isnt a random attack because people like that tend to need to show off their e-***** and say that they have done something.

So, basicly, I think the admins might be able to find the perpetrator quicker if they think of what the site itself has done in the past few months that might make someone angry enough to do such a large (well, from my perspective as an australian, as our internet services totaly suck) attack.

I talked to an Attorney that comes into my store and was telling him about what was going on. He said that it is defined as Cyber-terroizium and that you do need to contact the FBI over it. Just to let you know.

your attorney needs to be dis-barred. DDoS against zam.com is a nuisance, not cyber-terrorism. DDoS attacks against federal/state/local government servers would be however.

For the most part, to constitute as cyber-terrorism, violence would have to ensue by the attackers, and or intimidation/coercion.

Back on topic. I hope you guys are able to put a swift stop to it. Being the victim of childish attacks for giving a free service which does the gaming community good is outlandish.

While personal retaliation is foolish, event such as this always bring to mind a scene from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, in which they track down everyone who was bad mouthing them on forums... bought plane tickets and beat the hell out of each person one by one. Classic.

If only you could.... ;-)

You mean we're not a federal/state/local government website? Whoops. I guess I shouldn't have filed my taxes as a federal employee this year! :p

Where are you getting this from?

Many organizations can suffer financial loss as a result of a denial-of-service attack and may wish to pursue criminal or civil charges against the intruder. For legal advice, we recommend that you consult with your legal counsel and law enforcement.

U.S. sites interested in an investigation of a denial-of-service attack can contact their local FBI field office for guidance and information.

Love the forums here. rate down for truthful information. well since you want to supply quotes from websites.. here are some for you.. (seeing as how people need a website to be quoted on anything that is said)

http://www.crime-research.org/news/18.04.2004/222/

Quote:
"Cyberterrorism is the premeditated, politically motivated attack against information, computer systems, computer programs, and data which result in violence against noncombatant targets by sub national groups or clandestine agents."

http://www.fbi.gov/congress/congress02/watson020602.htm

Quote:
Cyberterrorism-–meaning the use of cyber tools to shut down critical national infrastructures (such as energy, transportation, or government operations) for the purpose of coercing or intimidating a government or civilian population–-is clearly an emerging threat.

I'm confused, were those links and quotes supposed to help your original statement, or were they to demonstrate that you were incorrect? Because just from the snippets you provided: 1) There's no violence involved in the attack, so the crime-research quote indicates you're wrong 2) The fbi.gov snippet indicates that cyberterrorism involves national infrastructures as a target, which as nice as the information can be on alla, is hardly a national infrastructure. So that leaves me wondering exactly what point you're trying to make...?

For everyone who's purchased a Premium Account here, perhaps we can pursue some sort of "theft of services" charge against the people responsible for these attacks? Because "cyber nuissance" probably doesn't pack much of a punch in the punishment department... And I want to see these guys in pain -- lots and lots of pain. Really ticks me off when people do stuff like this...

If you were hacked by whoever attacked this site, you'd have been caught by our botnet script and been IP banned from the site too, and wouldn't be able to access us at all. So it does just look like an unfortunate coincidence.

We are constantly monitoring our servers and code for intrusion. No unauthorized code changes have been made, so it's not possible for someone to have injected a keylogger which you would have then downloaded from here for your accounts to be hacked. It's purely a coincidence.

We wouldn't bring the servers back up to serve pages if we weren't confident that an intrusion hadn't taken place. In the event that one was discovered we'd shut our web servers down immediately.
