I'd keep mining as you noted it supplies JC so they make a good pair.
Otherwise... if you've already got someone that can do mining/herbing quick IE a druid who can do the herbing in flight form that can feed the other it doesn't really matter.
Skinning will be needed if you want to do LW on someone down the road as buying all the materials can be pretty pricey

At least on my server, the mining bots are back, and ore is going for about half what it did last month. Gems and enchanting mats have seen a knock-on hit, but are maintaining 2/3 to 3/4 last month's price.

If I keep the mining, I'll be doing it as much to support the jewel crafting. there's much more profit to be had in leather Heavy leather is still consistently running 40G/stack an even medium is pulling a healthy 30-35. Best prices are for savage, but its a lot harder to farm because its spread out more and the beasties fight back better.

Surprised to see this thresd resurface. Basically, I did as I planned, flogged the skinning and mining until I had over 20K gold in the till. Then I dropped skinning and took up jewel crafting. By prospecting most of my own mats, i managed to actually increase my till somewhat while leveling my J C through 525 - only to learn that the best gems I can craft are soulbound and cannot be sold or even given away and there's no demand for 99% of the gems you CAN sell . So, while it looks like I could continue to incrementally increase my wealth with the JC, it'd be like trying to put out a forest fire with an eye-dropper and a thimble.

Ergo, I'm now thinking of another career change to either blacksmithing or engineering, both of which would dovetail with my mining.

I have no quibble with the two-profession active limit, but itd be nice if the'd give you an achievement based on the total number of professions your alt has mastered, even when now inactive.

To take full advantage of this, you'll need to make sure you've stockpiled money for leveling and purchase of some recipes. It'll feel painful to pay all that money, but if you're one of only two or three people on your server with a popular recipe for the first couple days, you'll make it all back as people flock to you for cuts.

The gathering profs make a killing the first month or so too. I made out like a bandit with herbalism on my druid. Mining and Skinning probably do just as well.
