Smelting Elementals QuestionFollow

I'm trying to use mining to convert Mote of Earth and Mote of Fire into their respective primal elements. I see it takes 10 of each to make/smelt one elemental. Check. Info on my mining screen says a forge is required. Standing by forge - check. Except...can't get them to "work" ie. the create/create all buttons are still greyed out. To make sure I was indeed standing in the right spot by a forge, I tried smelting some ores I had...all went well.

What am I missing here please? Thank you in advance.

You dont need to use mining, anyone can combine them into Primals, just click on a stack of 10

I think you're looking at the "primal shatter" thing that blacksmiths do to turn a primal back into it's 10 component parts.

Fire Sunder for instance
or
Earth Shatter

Key on both of those is "Allows the miner to reduce a primal BLANK into its component motes. "

If you have a stack of 10 motes ... this is what the item says

mote of earth the "Create primal" item rather than the motes actually
and the mote
Actual Mote of Earth

Note the "use" item... you use drinks or food by right clicking on them, you can't use unless you have 10 in your bags, and probably in one stack.

This one is strange to watch. I recently cleared bags by converting several stacks of earth and water to their primal forms. In both cases, what it seemed to be doing was taking them on a FIFO (first in, first out) basis. I had two or three nine-stacks (where since I already had nine, a two-unit pickup had started a new stack). It SEEMED to be taking those first before jumping to the next stack. Its also interesting that, unlike the twenty items of most mats, the mining bags only stack ten of these before starting a new slot.

Thank you all for responding. It is a bit confusing since it recently showed up under my mining menu as something new I could "smelt." However, I tried clicking on a stack of 10 Motes of Fire with an alt who does not have mining and, sure enough, it turned into Primal Fire.

After turning the motes into the primal, I looked that up to see what it was used for and read on the Wowhead site:

Quote:
Primal Fire is an elemental crafting material. It is created by joining Mote of Fire (10). Miners can sunder this primal back into motes.

So it sounds like the motes can be clicked (stack of 10) and made into a primal, then a miner can turn the primal back into the 10 motes. Very odd.

It is a bit odd.

The whole using mining to break the elemental thingies was kind of done away with in later expansions. I keep waiting for them to remove this little kink from the game at some point.

the motes were needed in X quantities for making some profession crafted items, I tended to convert them to the primals as they would turn 100 motes into 10 primals... less bag space needed... but I'd only keep up to one stack of motes sitting there in-case I had to craft something with 'em.. sometimes I'd miss and have to break a primal down...

I was certainly glad when the latest versions came out and it's simply volatile stacks of 200 no different form of the same item to deal with.
