I find that my AH toons support all that I do. I'm too lazy to go gather on my 450 miner / herbalist. A lot of times, I just buy my fish feasts and flasks rather than actually put the bait on the hook.
Of course, all this is good for those who actually do the work, since I'm a happy buyer and they're a happy seller. I enjoy the AH and disenchant on both the Horde and Alliance side. I bought a Battered Hilt this morning on the Horde AH for resale, and bid on one on the Alliance side. This is a potential money making item that interests me. I've already bought and used one on my main, so that's done.
Anybody else enjoy the AH, and find it supplies all your needs?

I used to play the AH quite a bit. However, the last month or so has been confusing. Prices seem to be falling for most materials and its not unusual to do Auctioneer resale searches that identify many items priced at 50% that I know won't sell for even that price. I can see that many people are trying to do the "Saronite Shuffle" but even with cheap saronite prices, you can't make money from it right now.
Except for doing gem transmutes and creating titansteel bars and selling those, I'm on the sidelines until there is a little more pricing stability. (Gnomeregan server)

I too am noticing (Bleeding Hollow) the price of disenchant mats at or below half of their previous value. I do not know if its because of MMO Champion clueing lots of people into the saronite shuffle or because of disenchanting in instances. Luckily it appears that enchant scrolls are doing a better job of retaining their value. The price has dropped on the scrolls, but they are still worth much more than the mats required to create. Also on the bright side, it appears the market for rare gems is coming back. As a result of triump badges now coming form heroics?

I buy herbs, make all inscription products and sell. I buy uncut cardinal rubies for 170 or less, cut to 23sp and sell for 195 or more. Those sell like hotcakes. I have a few other epic cuts as well but they sell noticeable slower, so the idea is still the same, but I sit on the gems longer. I have 2 miners ATM, I stock up on mats for TS bars on the weekend when they're cheap, then make them all week long. Prices fluctuate from 125g (weekends) to 143g(average) to 160g, I generally sell on the higher side of average and stockpile when they're low.
I'm working on an enchanter for saronite shuffling - if I make an unlimitted amount of dust I can sell it on scrolls for profit. I can't buy enough cheap dust from the AH at prices I like. In general a few stacks is 1g/stack but when you need 40 stacks the price is higher.
My shuffle will be make vellums with inscription, send vellums to scribe at cost (far cheaper then AH), prospect ore on JC, sell chalcedonies and dark jades as uncut stacks on AH, sell bloodstones for 35g/stack minimum. I find the orange/yellow ones don't sell higher then 23g/stack so those are what I'll use for shuffling. Chalcedony and dark jade sell so much higher...chalcedony for 180g/stack at times and dark jade for 90g. The only stacks worth shuffling on my server are those that sell for less then 25g. I buy eternal earth in stacks at 4g a piece these days. Mass disenchant the rings/necks and make scrolls. Buy abyss crystals under 25g (rare) and shatter them for greater cosmics.
Leveling tailoring to sell 10-50 bags a day, leveling LW just to see what I can do with it. Only profession I'll be missing is blacksmithing soon. After that I'll work on more recipes.

I pretty much live in the AH now that I don't raid.
I have a miner and thats about it now, pretty much everything is bought. I find it more time costly to farm than it is to spend 1 hour at the AH vs farming.

Spend 10 or so minutes (after my auctioneer scan) just buying things that'll make a profit.

Since my main is on Alliance, but play the AH on both sides, moving money through the neutral AH is something I occasionally do (requires 2 accounts). Since 15% is a hefty fee, I decided instead of selling junk for 10k, get a good price on a really expensive item on one side, then sell it for 1g through the neutral AH. I have the second account up, running, with the search already populated, so I can grab it quick. I save the 1.5k AH fee, but accept the risk that if I'm not fast, someone could walk away with a 10k item for 1g.
Playing the market is the known secret to a lot of money. Buy low, sell high is the trick. I sometimes buy all of an item and put them back for my own price, monopoly it. That makes goood money. Although you need money to make money.
Also I notice that after a weekend (say sunday-evening) there is a lot of weekend-wow-players and the marketprices go down rapidly. I then buy all cheap items, wait for a few days and sell 'm for a normal price again.
Also good trick, sell Flasks/Foodbuffs etc around raidtime. Loads of ppl buy there flask/food etc. around 20:00 (raidtime) if there are out. They kinda have to buy to join raid in best condition. So sundayafternoon, I'll buy loads of food and "cheap" flasks and put them back on at 19:45 to make good profit.
I never do daily's anymore and make tons of money just by playing the market.

I play the AH too, and I'm with some of the other people that replied; I hate farming. I don't really even like crafting to make money. But playing the AH has become almost like a mini-game to me ever since I started playing WoW and figured out how to use Auctioneer. In fact, the reason I was looking around in this forum section was because I was going to ask a general question about how "liquid" most of you high-rollers are.
But anyway, yeah...farming and crafting can make you some really great money, but so can playing the AH. It just depends on how much time and effort you want to invest, and what gives you the most enjoyment. Playing the AH (only buying and selling, that is) is definitely an art. Auctioneer is a great tool, but it's not a magic addon that prints money for you. You really have to spend a lot of time learning the market, memorizing trends and items, getting to the point where you can scan lists of auctions and know within an instant whether or not something is worthwhile.
There was a period of like six months when I wasn't really playing WoW, but for some stupid reason, I left my account active. Even though I wasn't playing, I would still log in every other day and do some AH work for 30 minutes or so. I think that's when it really started to become that "mini-game" mentality; like a game within a game, seeing how much gold I could make by doing nothing except except sitting in the AH and checking my mail. It kinda sucks now, because old habits die hard, and my AH time is cutting into my actual playing time. Every time I log on, I usually end up spending 30 to 60 minutes on my bank alt. Plus I've gotten to the point where I have to use the mail system to store about 50-75 messages full of items because my bank and guild bank are full, so if I don't log in to move mail around, a few thousand gold worth of attachments could expire...And it's like pulling teeth to get Blizzard to restore your mail if you've already requested it a few times in the past.

I like to have 1k working capital for daily buying on both the horde and alliance side. Every so often I'll purchase an item for personal use for between 6-18k, or powerlevel a profession, so funds will go down, but that's ok. I also fund all guild repairs for our guild, through our guild bank. It's a game to build it back up when I get a little low.
Our guild was funded through reselling enchant mats until the recent sharp downturn. The problem with playing the market is that you sometimes lose, and that hurt us when several of our big banking guys were sitting on lots of infinite dust they couldn't make a profit on.
We've recovered though and now are taking advantage of the great Frost Lotus/flask market on our server (lots of people raiding) with several alts farming extended Ulduar instances. It's not quite the same rush as successfully playing the market, but good for a reliable couple thousand gold/week/farmer.
