With my alchy now being able to xmute my excesses of saronite into titanium, I really don't have a need for rare bits of titanium ore I score, so I've been trying to prospect some epic gems from them. I don't know what the success rate is supposed to be, but its been crappy for me as I've destroyed an easy 5-6 stacks of ore over the past week or three and only finally just got an epic gem prospected today (game must have heard me complaining to my gal that I was about to give up on prospecting).
So any idea what the drop rate is supposed to be as its looking cheaper and easier to simply hit WG and do the weeklies on all my toons that can and buy them that way and simply put the titanium ore onto the market for sale rather then waste it trying to prospect one?

All epic gems have a 4% chance to appear in any prospect of Titanium Ore, with multiple being found on occasion.

Yep, epic gems from Titanium is about 20% (1/5) I believe.
OK, one guy is saying 4%, another 20% and I saw someone on a different thread claiming 25% - is there a source anywhere on actual rate?
I don't even bother prospecting Titanium. I've never gotten an epic gem from a Frozen Orb, and they have the same drop rate.

You get the Titanium dust from prospecting Titanium though and that sells for A LOT!! (at least on my server it does)

From my experience (right after 3.2 patch) I prospected several stacks of titanium ore, and like clockwork about 1/5-1/6 prospects gave me a random epic gem (once or twice I got two). Every time I got titanium dust and probably about half the time got a rare (maybe more, it's been months).

Anobix and I are essentially saying the same thing.
Short answer:
WoWHead lists each epic gem at roughly 4%. Add in the fact that there are 6 colors, and 4 * 6 = a 24% chance.
Long answer:
When you prospect some ore, it "rolls dice" for every gem you can create through prospecting from that ore.
For example, Titanium Ore has a 25% chance to prospect into each green-quality gem, a 4% chance to prospect into each blue-quality gem, a 4% chance to prospect into each epic-quality gem, and a 60% chance to prospect into Titanium Powder. That is to say, each gem gets its own dice roll to determine if it will appear in that prospect.
So for example, let's say we prospect 5 titanium ore.
Every single thing it can prospect into gets its own individual roll of a 100-sided die. So the game rolls a 100-sided die once to see if it lands in the range of 1-60. If it does, then Titanium Powder will appear in the loot table (It rolls again to determine just how much titanium powder, too). Then it will move on to the green gems. Let's say for example, that it will start with Bloodstones. It will roll the 100-sided die again to see if it lands in the range 1-25. Let's say it lands on 42, so Bloodstone will not appear in the prospect. It then repeats this for every green-quality gem, before moving on to blue-quality gems and rolling the 100-sided die again, but with the range being only 1-4. After that is done, it moves on to epic-quality gems, and rolls again to see if the die will land between 1-4 for each gem.
Thus, every epic gem has a 4% chance to be prospected, and in the long run, it will appear as a 24% chance to prospect into a random epic gem.
But there are other factors too, such as making sure you will always get something out of a prospect, or making sure you don't by some miracle of chance get every single gem you could get out of one prospect.
Note: Take this with a grain of salt. This is purely my theory based on personal experience and data from databases such as WoWWiki and WoWHead. I have seen no post or other confirmation pointing towards this method as the true method for how the game determines prospects. Feel free to karma-bomb this post into oblivion if it proves inaccurate.

Interestingly (I love when a sentence starts with that word, it usually means it will not be at all interesting to me), I just prospected 90 titanium ore last night. So that's 18 stacks of 5, and I got 15 titanium dust, 7 epic gems (4 of which were cardinal rubies and king's ambers), some blue gems and some green gems. Sorry, I didn't keep track of the blues or greens.
I buy up the ore when it is 16g each or less and wait until I have four or five stacks. So, I spent 1,440g on the titanium and the cardinal rubies and king's ambers sell for a minimum of 200g each without being cut. I can cut bold and delicate rubies and I can cut quick ambers, all of which have been selling for 240 to 280g.
As you can see, I made a profit on the epics only. Even if I did not score so many red and yellows (I also got one epic blue which I cut into a spirit gem and sold for 245g), I would have broken even before counting the profit on the titanium dust. I put those up on the AH for 38g apiece.
My conclusion, russtle, is that your mojo is bad! You need to offer cigar and rum to Jobu!

Ouch, my server must suck for uncuts. Titanium is often way more than 16G, and uncut gems usually cap around 160 for Cardinal Rubies.
