#1 Oct 30 2009 at 12:34 PM Rating: Decent
I am a newbie to fishing but i have a couple of 70+ toons.

my main is a 78 human rogue. where is the best place to start up and level fishing fast? I never did the cooking/fishing thing and would like to get started.

any help would be awesome.

thanks,

doug

You can fish anywhere there is water. Basically, you don't get skillups based on location, but the amount of times you've fished. A good resource for fishing is El's Extreme Anglin'.

get a pole, get a few fishing lures and head to any river, lake or shore you can find. they changed fishing so you will catch grey trash until you skill up enough to start catching actual fish.

i would suggest startingin some of the following places
-IF or Org so you may have a chance to get their special catch fish.(crafty and ironjaw)
-Dalaran Sewer to maybe catch the rat NCP
-Dalaran fountain to catch coins for the acheivement
-anywhere in northrend

also, check the Fishing Dailies in Dalaran and in Shat city, having quests sometimes helped me with a goal in fisihing, not just standing there for hours just fisihing. both fishing dailies have some really good fishing rewards.

good luck.

Since you are starting out at level 78 you have much more flexibility in your fishing options. I would suggest trying to kill two (or more) birds with one stone to make your fishing leveling less boring.

If you want to garner a lot of fishing achievements, you could start in either Ironforge or Orgrimmar (whether you are Horde or Alliance) and continue until you get Old Ironjaw or Old Crafty, respectively. Additionally, you can try for the achievement of catching a rare fish.

If you want to try and obtain a Sea Turtle mount, you can fish in schools around Northrend hoping to get lucky.

Convenient location-wise is to fish in the Dalaran Fountain to work on The Coin Master.

You can learn what fish make up the food that buffs your class the best and just work on building up stacks of those.

Or you can just find a location you like and sit and fish there in comfort.

Just remember, being near the trainers make your leveling faster as you can learn your new skills quickly. However, since they are located in cities, you won't be catching any unique fish that you can use in leveling cooking along with fishing.

i am correct in assuming that i can't fish in northrend until i get a certain fishing skill, right? i should just fish in IF until i get to the level requirements?

thanks to everyone for the replies. i am a bit ashamed to have high level toons and know nothing about fishing. i learned to play the game by myself and never found this site til this week.

when you get to fishing skill 1, and when you have a fishing pole equiped, you can fish anywhere you want to.

you will not catch anything usefull until you have a skill somewhat appropreate for where you are skilling up.

Don't worry about it so much. I didn't level my toon's fishing and cooking until he had been 80 for awhile. Just have fun!

And yes, you can now start wherever you'd like, though your chances of catches that aren't junk are slimmer in higher level fishing areas.

Try fishing in the Dalaran fountain by the fishing daily quest-giver. You will probably get the Coin Master achievement on your way.

CountFenris has it right and i can see little really to add .

For those starting out at all levels seek out quests like the ones in the village in darkshore they usually get me to around 150 skill and its less boring when you are fishing for a reason ( i am not sure of the horde equivalent quests ) and while you explore waters always fish the various pools as they have fun items from fish to boxes and even a few achievements can be got plus if you do cooking it is well worth keeping fishing skill up , and as has been said the mount and some pets so all in all it is well worth fishing.

One advantage of fishing someplace quiet like IF, is that it is easy to hear the bites. I'm leveling fishing on an alt, and was surprised when I just now got Old Ironjaw.

So can you get the fish from IF and Org at any level fishing? I didn't realize that, I may start trying to level my fishing out there if that's the case. Mine is about 200 right now and for the last 50 levels or so I've just been doing the fishing daily to try and level it up. It's much less tedious that way.

You can fish anywhere you like. If the area is too high to catch good fish, you will catch bits of cloth and other junk. You can skill up where ever you fish.

I meant specifically the achievement fish. I knew you can fish anywhere. Smiley: smile

I caught old ironjaw in IF at under 200 fishing.

thanks, folks, for all the advice. i have been fishing in northrend hoping to get lucky and get that sea turtle. i don't know where is the best place to find him but i have leveled to 230 in a few hours of play so that's not too bad. the last 200 will take quite some time, though, i expect.

btw, what pets can be caught and where?

thanks,

doug

the higher your fishing skill goes, the longer/more casts it will take to get to the next skill point.
if i remember, its something like 3 casts per skill point until about 200, then more and more casts per point as you level closer to max level.

You can catch the Turtle mount from Northrend fishing schools (any pool in northrend)
You can possibly get a "strand Crawler" pet by doing the fishing daily from Dalaran.
you can get 1 of 4 croc pets from the Crocs in the City daily given from the Shat city fishing daily
you can try to fish up an magic crawdad box, and maybe one of your 3 wishes will be another pet. this magic box is found in highland fish schools in outlands, accessable only with flying mounts (tarakkor forest and nargrand zones)

Definitely use the best lure you can afford (or the glow-worm from the Dalaran Fishing Daily) if you're fishing anyplace you care about what you catch.

Do the Dalaran Fishing Daily if it's easy - in particular Jewel of the Sewers, which is right in town and often on the same route as the cooking daily. And you can get the Sewer Rat pet from down there. Admittedly it will take forever until you hit 200 or so, but there's not a whole lot of reward for those points (monetary, at least) no matter where you fish, these days.

Eventually, if you're looking for achievements, the best place to go is probably the inland pools in Howling Fjord. They give you a shot at the Turtle mount, and they contain the Dark Herring for the "One That Didn't Get Away" achievement (anecdotally, it has the best drop rate of any of the rare "fish" ATM). My main, who has all the hard achievements for "Salty", had to go there - while my JC/bank alt got a rare in SW harbor (at level < 250) while waiting for a boat to Northrend...

A good money maker for low level fishing is the deviate fish from The Barrens. As for the turtle mount, the best place is off the icebergs in Borean Tundra, lots of pools very close together.

I decided to finally level cooking on my 80 DK, and we all know fishing is a swell profession to go with it.

I made it to 14 fishing and couldn't take it anymore. I just don't know what it is about this game's Fishing, but I still can't get into it (took me a long time to get into FFXI's too...).

*sigh*

Don't forget to fish up the book that teaches you how to track fish! I got mine from the pools in Stonetalon, but I'm sure there are other places.
